I actually encoutered this the other day.

Me: “Yeah I need reliability for work and sometimes I just don’t have time to repair stuff. Last time I was on rolling release some update fucked my system right before an important deadline”

Other person: “It wOn’T bReAk If YoU UndErStANd iT”

._.

Anyway stable is awesome

rambaroo, (edited )

Yep and that’s why I refuse to use rolling distros. I don’t need the latest update of everything to game. Give me a stable system any day instead.

Debian or openSUSE Leap for me.

Pantherina,

Arch + BTRFS snapshots might be great. I am trying that out currently, but will probably just stay on Fedora Kinoite

the -delete option in find goes AFTER the expression.

find -delete [whatever] will delete EVERYTHING in the current directory and below, like rm -rf *

Huh. I wonder if GNU find should be modified, so that -delete only works when explicitly given a directory.

I’ve used cat to actually concatenate files a lot to re-assemble old Wii games once they were copied to a SIM card, less than using it to see inside a file though. Maybe cracked isn’t the correct word I’m not English lol.

“All Arch users are stupid vegan crossfitters who never shut up and contribute nothing to society and the only thing they ever care about is making their desktop look l33t and Arch is a horrible distro and did I mention all Arch users are stupid?”

Oh. My. Sides.

I switched from Ubuntu to Arch because I was sick of packages not compiling due to a complete lack of dependency management. I use stock KDE with zero frills and I spend most of my time hacking on open source projects. I never tell anyone what OS I use (unless they ask for recommendations for their new machine, and I’m prepared to also tell them why I personally prefer it) because they don’t care. I’m a normal guy who keeps myself to myself and hates the people who think a pretty desktop is more important than a usable system just as much as everyone else.

However, I use Arch, and Arch bad, which means I must be the most annoying person on the planet.

You gotta take this less personally.

As an open source maintainer I notice the trend that Arch uses are simultaneously the most likely to have caused the issue themselves and are always the first to blame my software.

I think these memes stem from the fact that a lot of Arch users are less experienced and spend a lot of time trying to create the “perfect” customized experience. Using Arch is a great way to get the experience, but it can be at the detriment of others sometimes.

Basically, learn to take it on the chin and move on. There’s some truth to the memes.

Varixable, in Two moods

As someone who was already only mostly playing single player games, the transition from Windows to Linux was so easy. All my games just work. The only multiplayer game I fuck with anymore is Battlebit Remastered, and that works great.

Since my style of learning is “jump in and figure it out as you go” (impulsive idiot), I’ve been very impressed with how much has just worked.

I’ve been afraid to recommend my set up to friends though because I don’t want to be their troubleshooter.

mortrek,

I love Linux, but I never expect it to be mainstream or even extremely accessible to typical users. In fact, if it made it to mainstream, it’d probably get ruined somehow by corporate interference, monetization, etc. How you may ask? Well, corporations have a lot of money and influence and I’m sure they could “find a way” if motivated to do so.

isVeryLoud,

The idea is that the base should be open, so you can build whatever you want on top of it.

BorgDrone,

I love Linux, but I never expect it to be mainstream or even extremely accessible to typical users

It already is mainstream. You probably own 10 times as many computers running Linux than Windows without even knowing it.

Desktop computers are a just a tiny part of the market.

it’d probably get ruined somehow by corporate interference, monetization, etc.

Yeah, it did. It’s called Android.

tslnox,

This is a dumb argument. Yes, my phone uses Linux. How many of the Android users actively come in contact with the underlying system?

Mainstream Linux means a big part of people actively choosing to install a Linux distribution or buy a computer or notebook with a real Linux distro pre installed (not that lightweight barebones distro they preinstall so they can sell it without Windows but with OS).

I use Gentoo, the family PC has OpenSUSE, only my wife’s laptop has Windows… Because guess what, she wants to use what she’s used to, what she knows.

BorgDrone,

Mainstream Linux means a big part of people actively choosing to install a Linux distribution or buy a computer or notebook

How is that mainstream? Desktop computers (including notebooks) are a niche market.

Ziglin, (edited )

Yeah, it did. It’s called Android.

Aren’t there Android versions that don’t have all the Google things and are open source? (GrapheneOS and LineageOS) If you’re just talking about your average android I’m afraid I agree and am an offender myself. (I hope to change that one day though)

pandacoder,

Google still controls the source, and so they have influence over the rest.

It’s like Ungoogled Chromium. Sure, it’s open source. Sure, if might have Google crap removed. Google still calls the shots on the direction of the browser.

Same still meaningfully applies to Chromium-based browsers.

Ziglin,

That’s good to know.

FidiFadi,

TootSweet, in I know it's not safe, but it's doesn't stop me

Just always write your own PKGBUILDs and never use the ones from AUR.

In fact, just write your own PKGBUILDs rather than using the Arch repos.

Make Arch Gentoo Again.

LemmyHead,

I don’t get all the noise around AUR being unsafe. Just verify the PKGBUILDS whenever you install or update something.

Chewy7324,

Just verify

requires basic programming knowledge or at least some time to get familiar with PKGBUILDs, and then they have to take the time to read it.

Yes, I agree people should at least look up where it loads data from, but people are lazy.

LemmyHead,

I would argue that it’s their own fault then. Laziness is not a valid excuse to put yourself so much at risk. If you start doing it consistently, it becomes a habit and won’t take much effort. Of course, the familiarity with PKBUILD syntax has a learning curve

But a peer-reviewing system would be a better approach in AUR. Weird that it’s not been implemented yet.

Chewy7324,

I guess it can be assumed that a good number of people read the PKGBUILDs, so at some point malware would be found. A peer-reviewing system would give people a false sense of security, since the AUR is a user repository, where breakage should be expected (compared to the official repos).

LemmyHead,

How would peer reviewing in a user repo be more a sense of false security compared to official repos? I don’t know any of the arch maintainers, so for me it’s also pure trust they don’t do shady stuff.

Peer reviewing would not be failproof for sure, but at least it would give more security than not reviewing the pkbuilds, and especially to those that aren’t too familiar with them

Chewy7324,

You’re right, a peer-review system would be a net positive. Should updates be reviewed before publishing? This means updates take longer to arrive.

take6056,

I think the argument is pretty solid as an alternative to writing PKGBUILDs yourself. Sure it doesn’t hold up for people unfamiliar, but Arch is build on the idea of getting yourself familiar with it.

Chewy7324,

Agreed. People should learn to read PKGBUILDs, but given how popular Arch(-based) distributions are, I do think many people won’t bother. Afterall, many people download random things all the time.
