cwagner, in How are we going to pay for all this?

Everyone? At once and next week? It would just die.

Kbin.social had a nice post (check their meta community for it; it’s technically a different software, but still), how the instance went from costing $2-3 a month to 1000. And that’s a tiny fraction of reddit.

Development needs to advance just to better handle current user counts, there’s a lot of things that simply never were an issue when only a few hundred users were active.

The way it will work, is probably donations, maybe some very few paid instances.

jbcarroll,

@cwagner @psylancer Also the fediverse in general having easier ways to self-host at home or on a VPS, which helps distribute costs/storage/bandwidth.

cwagner,

Storage doesn’t distribute, though. Every instance needs to save everything. I run my own instance, so the way it works, is that I save everything anyone posts in any community I subscribed to. Permanently, by default.

Bandwidth, sure, mostly. But storage will only grow. And massive amounts of instances will also add issues over time, unlike something like XMPP/Jabber, the fediverse is more of a hubs and spokes model.

hsl, in Hey Lemmy, what are your favorite ear worms?
@hsl@wayfarershaven.eu avatar

Peacemaker intro: Do you wanna taste it? by Wigwam

I know it’s an old thread but it’s a good question.

lfr1138, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

I still look, but mostly to: a) Keep up with the Oakland Athletics fan protest efforts as the A’s sub is where that really got coordinated with the larger community b) Try to figure out if some of the oddball subs I am on there and enjoyed have equivalents here, on the Matrix, Telegraph, etc.

I feel like I will kill my account there once those things are resolved enough to make Reddit fully pointless for me.

rustyfish, in In which game did you spend the most hours?
@rustyfish@lemmy.world avatar

Roughly 2.000 hours in Terraria. But Factorio is quickly catching on.

MrSpaceMan1, in What's your real-life superpower?

Hardly a super power, but I can rather accurately when meat is done by judging firmness of it. It’s what you get when you cook it frequently

unagi, in In which game did you spend the most hours?

Old School RuneScape, by a lot!

LEDZeppelin, in In which game did you spend the most hours?

Factorio

Reaching 1000hours and barely scratching the surface

ProtonBadger, in In which game did you spend the most hours?

Guildwars2, 14000+ hours. Mostly WvW.

fratermus, in Downvotes = “I disagree” or “this is bad and you should feel bad”?

Downvotes = “I disagree” or “this is bad and you should feel bad”?

I withhold downvotes until it means “this is disinformation, or misinformation so wrong-headed it could mislead those new to the topic”

tias,

Same, and also “this has already been said in this thread. You should have upvoted the existing comment.” Basically a tool to improve signal-to-noise ratio of the discussion.

dudewitbow, in Does the reddit style format breed toxicity?

Not necessarily toxicity, but echo chambers. Echo chambers could then be used to be toxic.

Joe_0237,

At least here in the free world we have to manually build echo chambers and “The Algorithm” does not build them around us without our consent.

HubertManne, in What's the first dream you remember having?
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

Im not sure about my first one but I had a re-occuring nightmare where home invaders came and I would run and I guess they where after me because they ran after. I would be alone or with different family members. I swear having eye crustys increased my chance of nightmares as a kid.

rmuk, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

No. I went cold turkey in mid-June. I logged back in last week to use Power Delete Suite to automatically edit every post and comment I ever made to this and then deleted my account.

I’ll still use Reddit read-only and with cookies blocked if I stumble upon (ahahaha) it through a search or something.

Are you trying to trick people into clicking on reddit? /j

Solgrund, in Does the reddit style format breed toxicity?

Personally core belief that people create and breed the toxicity. Use any system you want if people behave toxic it will become toxic.

Joe_0237,

a lot of it could be the no-face aspect, we where that a lot

Steve, in Does the reddit style format breed toxicity?
@Steve@compuverse.uk avatar

I’m thinking you care too much about the thoughtless reactions of anonymous strangers.
Remember… In this game, the points don’t matter.

Joe_0237,

its strange because its not the disapproval that gets me, its not knowing why. I guess the lesson is that if someone did not even say why, its not really something anyone actually cared about.

Mutelogic,

This is exactly it. They don’t care about your post or you or anyone really. For them, it just feels good to bring down others.

Joe_0237,

i hope/believe that the intent is rarely malicious, that its not really a significant thing at all on that side.

luthis, in Does the reddit style format breed toxicity?

Downvotes are not a reflection on you, they are a representation of how much everyone else agrees or disagrees.

I don’t personally want the downvotes hidden or removed like how it is on Youtube.

DuskLoaf,
@DuskLoaf@lemmy.world avatar

I’d like an option, user side perhaps that just tucks it away, doesn’t remove it just don’t show it

Joe_0237,

they did remove downvotes on youtube tho :(

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

This is why I’m in favor. I’m not the hugest fan, but if the alternative is YouTube or facebooks like system then I’ll take the downvotes. Otherwise you get the low quality like farms where minions memes are uploaded everywhere and there’s no way to say “we hate these, stop posting them”

Joe_0237,

lol that is a very good point

s6original,
@s6original@lemmy.world avatar

I like the way it was here. Points seem to be working correctly or did. I think it’s a bad idea to put point totals on a users profile for everyone to see. I don’t think totals are or should be important. But upvotes and downvotes are indicators of how much value a reader thinks a post/comment has. You can’t tell the temperature in a room without numbers. But I would rather not see a reddit-like karma system.

can,

Yet every app seemingly wants to show me a total :(

XiELEd,

Yeah, I wish there was a feature that lets you switch between total-only and lemmy format.
