AngrilyEatingMuffins, in How do other Europeans survive the raining season in Asia?

Like 15 boats pollute as much as every private vehicle on Earth. Your AC has very little impact. Don’t feel bad about not sweltering.

You mean the cruise ships? Can you link to something about that? Cause I tried to google it and it seems like cars are still very much ahead of all the other transportation methods by pollution.

AngrilyEatingMuffins,

https://medium.com/@victoria27/heres-how-much-pollution-shipping-containers-and-freight-trucks-cause-b358cb034c70

Obviously this isn’t to rail against the necessity of shipping but it’s an example of the fact that these issues will be solved by industry, not individuals

Thanks for the link. It’s this line I presume:

It has been estimated that just one of these container ships, the length of around six football pitches, can produce the same amount of pollution as 50 million cars. The emissions from 15 of these mega-ships match those from all the cars in the world.

Which is of course a shit ton of emissions, but 15x50 million is 750 mln, and isn’t there like 1.5 bn actively driven cars? The math kinda doesn’t check out.

P.S. And again Americans with their football fields per furlong :) Why not at least mention something in actual units? I have no idea how big a football pitch is.

AngrilyEatingMuffins,

This was written like a decade ago. My understanding is that part of the inflation hike was that they changed the way they double check whether or not these ships are using ultra dirty fuel or not. So things are improving.

Interesting_Test_814, in Anyone else missing posts in smaller Lemmy communities because they are overshadowed by the popular ones?

Yeah, I’ve actually just unsubscribed from !memes because otherwise it was the only community to appear in my subscribed feed. One thing reddit did well and I miss on lemmy was giving visiblility to posts on smaller subscribed communities when sorting by hot

Astaroth, in Anyone else missing posts in smaller Lemmy communities because they are overshadowed by the popular ones?

I think some way to temporarily exclude/include which communities’ feed show up would be ideal.

And maybe some way to tag or group up communities into collections.

flipht, in What would you call a monarchist government where multiple families rules in turns?

Look at historical examples like the Serene Republic of Venice.

Basically you have an oligopoly that controls the levers of power and elects one of their own to be the leader.

Also read up on selectorate theory. There's a good book called The Dictator's Handbook that goes into detail, and for a shorter way to consume this info you can watch the YouTube video Rules for Rulers which is based on the same book.

All governments are nested resources distribution streams. Resources flow up to the decision maker, which then distributes resources back down the chain to buy loyalty to maintain power. Regimes change when one side or the other experiences a major disruption.

Wouldn’t setting the feed to local fix this issue? Anyway, I had to block a couple of communities that were posting 092475097809 posts a second. I saw nothing but those, so I blocked them. All good now.

AnonTwo, in Anyone else missing posts in smaller Lemmy communities because they are overshadowed by the popular ones?

I had to block one of the meme's communities for now because there were times where one person would post 4 different memes within seconds of each other, they would all get upvoted, and now a 4th of the page are memes

Not that I dislike memes, but it was happening for most of the day. It did convince me to specialize my subscribed list a bit more though.

lemminer, in Anyone else missing posts in smaller Lemmy communities because they are overshadowed by the popular ones?

You might need to remove some of those popular communities to extract what you are actually looking for. Because the posts from the popular communities stay on the top of your list. That worked for me.

BURN, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

Only when I’m searching things on google. Unfortunately Reddit is still a gold mine of technical knowledge that’s not replicated anywhere.

deweydecibel, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

A bit. Not much, but a bit.

Lemmy is still missing some things I enjoyed from Reddit, things I can’t just snap my fingers and create here by typing a name into the “create community” page.

I’m not bothered by it. The transition will happen in time. Rome wasn’t built in a day. Etc.

ButhJolokia, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

Not really. Checked it a couple of times, but I’m sticking with Lemmy. Don’t miss it, don’t need it.

GiuseppeAndTheYeti, in Anyone else missing posts in smaller Lemmy communities because they are overshadowed by the popular ones?

Yes, but I figure that’s just the way it will go until the community grows. Give it another couple months of growth and reddit exodus then I imagine we’ll see far more QOL updates to Lemmy and Jerboa.

I admit I wasn’t intending to leave Reddit. Sure, I absolutely wasn’t going to install the damn official app, but I browse Reddit way more on desktop that on my phone. But it turns out my time spent on Reddit absolutely tanked without me doing much. Lemmy turned out to be a better replacement for me than I expected, I could find a lot of interesting activity here unlike, say, Mastodon where I had to dig further.

That does not mean I left Reddit entirely lol, but I sure enter way less now.

SubsAndDubs, in Anyone else missing posts in smaller Lemmy communities because they are overshadowed by the popular ones?

Had to block some of the meme communities there for this very reason. My feed no matter what was meme after meme. Blocking them has made the all feed much better.

Dfirebug, in What's the best Android/iPhone app for Lemmy?

I am using mlem for iOS. I haven’t tried anything else yet though. (Also, mlem is still in testflight beta, but I think it will be on the app store soon)

I purged my comments and deleted my main account on July 1st, which was surprisingly emotional for me. I use Alien Blue on mobile, which still works so far, but now that my main account is logged out, I’ll never be able to log another account in because authentication has been broken in Alien Blue for a while.

I’m keeping Alien Blue installed for two reasons: one, for checking on a friend who only posts updates on reddit, and two, I read r/games a couple times a week for headlines and discussion. Lemmy just doesn’t have the same level of engagement or discussion as r/games; even though there’s a certain brand of insufferable commenters there, the majority of people post thoughtful comments that are more than one or two sentences long and those are the kinds of threads I like reading. Lemmy threads seem to be more shallow; lots of replies to the parent, but very few threads that go more than one or two comments deep.
