BigTechMustBurn, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

“Ignorance is bliss.”

GentlemenPreferBongs, in What movie scared you shitless when you were a child?

My babysitter showed me Critters (in secret) when I was 5. Rather than be scarred, she turned me into a avid horror fan. I saw all the 80’s classics when I was way too young for them thanks to HBO and Cinemax.

None phased me.

Laughably, what finally got me was so mild. In Poltergeist 2 or 3, there’s a scene where the kid’s reflection no longer mimics his own movements. It’s not even the scare, but rather the set-up.

I started staring at mirrors when I was alone, just waiting for my reflection to break into a sinister smile. My fear was, when it did, what would I do? No adult would believe me. Mirrors are unavoidable. Something supernatural would be after me. I knew I wouldn’t be able to pull off some “final girl” shit IRL.

girlfreddy, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?

Everything except jazz (because I can’t find the rhythm, which is the point I guess).

Depends on the jazz - plenty rhythm in some jazz, check out Lee Morgan’s Sidewinder for instance :-)

I Hear you. I hate jazz. All jazz. It’s just revolting to me. I’m such a wierdo.

Jimbob15515, in People who work in food service or customer service: What’s the dumbest thing a customer ever insisted was “the law” or “illegal”?

I worked at a book store, and the card readers processed everything as credit. Which is generally fine, since most folks’ debit cards can be run either way.

I had an old dude come up and pay with his debit card. When it didn’t ask for a pin, he started screaming at me about how I’d just illegally charged his credit card. I politely explained that it didn’t work that way and he just kept yelling. So I rudely explained that it didn’t work that way.

Dude, you think you inserted your debit card and that magically, our system somehow found out your credit card information and charged that instead?

Dubious_Fart,

Dude would probably be better iff it it made his debit a credit card.

Debit cards can be run as credit, but they don’t have anywhere near the protections of a credit card.

dan,
@dan@upvote.au avatar

Debit cards can be run as credit

Does it cost the merchant more?

In Australia, debit cards are dual-network, and credit transactions cost far more than debit transactions. Debit uses a local system called EFTPOS that has low fees, whereas credit uses the card issuer’s network (Mastercard, Visa, etc) and they take a far larger percentage.

Dubious_Fart,

I have no idea, Do debit cards have better protections in australia?

Cause in America, if you run a debit card, you get no protections (edit, banks will generally give you your money back if the card is stolen, after an investigation, nothing else really). I literally have been told by a bank that “If you wanted to make charge backs and have protections, you should have used your credit card”

dan,
@dan@upvote.au avatar

A lot of people only have debit cards in Australia, and consumer protection is a lot stronger than the USA. Most credit cards in Australia have an annual fee, and the only rewards are usually frequent flyer points, so they’re nowhere near as common as in the USA.

I’m Aussie but I’ve been living in the USA for 10 years. American credit cards are something else. So many good cards with no annual fee, great perks (like extended warranty), and great rewards (like cash back, or points that are worth way more than in Australia).

I’m tempted to upgrade for:

But I’m not that tempted so I haven’t done it, still very happy with my Oneplus 7T from 2020.

For Android I’m finding Liftoff to be the best comparison to RIF so far.

However, I I am waiting to check out Boost. But for now, I’ve stopped using the other 2 big ones (Connect and Jerboa) altogether in favor of Liftoff.

ada, in What is the craziest thing that's ever happened in your life?
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

I transitioned.

The way I move through the world and the way people treat me is just fundamentally different to the way that they used to treat me. I have seen and lived “both sides” as it were

I sometimes still have trouble believing that it’s real…

FrostMyProstate,

It is real for sure. I’m a cis male with what is generally considered a woman’s name. At work, it is crazy how differently people treat me when they only know me through chat or email vs in person or on the phone. It gets really interesting meeting some people for the first time after communicating only via text for a while. So much changes right at that moment.

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Do you ever get people assuming that you’re a trans woman?

FrostMyProstate,

Not explicitly. In recent years I have noticed people being more careful if that makes any sense. I live in a very liberal area.

Poeticbiscuit, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?

I’d say I used to listen to metal, but nowadays, I still listen to metal lol. Huge fan of Progressive Metal/Djent/Thall bands. Not much into Deathcore/Doom Metal lately however.

At work tho, I tend to listen to a lot of instrumental stuff and genres vary greatly: mathrock, jazz, electronic, game/movie OSTs, blues, fusion, and among others.

During drives, mainly depends on the mood, but mostly revolves around the above given genres.

To name a few artists, I usually listen to the below (in random order):

  • Jakub Zytecki
  • Chon
  • Plini
  • Periphery
  • Necrophagist (when r u guys coming back 😔)
  • Dirty Loops
  • Up Dharma Down
  • Joji
  • Tycho
  • Sleep Token
  • Lorna Shore
  • Tom Misch

Would love to share some more, but these are what I thought of at the moment.

I just learned about the circles people run in at metal shows.

JimmyDean,

Woah, I’ve actually been to a Chon show. Totally didn’t expect to see that band pop up in this thread

Poeticbiscuit,

Lucky! How were they upfront? I’ve only seen their live shows on YouTube.

JimmyDean,

They were great. I think it was around 2015-2016, and I still have a Chon pin from the show too!

flop_leash_973, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

I just enjoy new tech and trying new things in that arena. So new phones before I technically need to is one of the things I spend disposable income on when something in that arena catches my interest.

Does have a nice side effect of constantly reenforcing the use of platform agnostic services and retaining ultimate control of my data if it is something I care about, since it really allows me to just move the sim to a new phone and be up and running in a hour or less with more or less any Apple or Android phone.

fixxundfertig,

I just enjoy new tech and trying new things in that arena.

I feel like smartphones have reached the end of new, groundbreaking tech. Megapixels have diminishing returns, we got phablets, are now transitioning back to smaller phones and back to folding phones of a different kind. What do you think the next big thing in mobile phone tech will be?

AletheCrow, (edited ) in What's the best Android/iPhone app for Lemmy?

On iOS the one I’ve come to prefer is Memmy. Tried liftoff and was not a big fan. Kept defaulting to Memmy without thinking.

Will be checking out Wefwef/Voyager as I like to e idea of PWA vs a full app install.

Edit: installed wefwef/Voyager. This is going to be the daily driver from now on. Able to login to every instance (exception being Lemmy.world getting connection errors.) Colors are fantastically readable in dark mode. Still poking. Around but loving it.

Ghostalmedia,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Memmy is at the front of the pack on iOS for native apps. Biggest feature set, first in the AppStore, cleanest UI. Mlem is also looking good and is proper native in Swift. Should be in the App Store in a few days. They’re about ready to submit for review.

GregorGizeh, in What's your filter settings on Lemmy? I feel like I miss the big posts and such.

My biggest gripe is that the all feed is not actually the all feed from across the fediverse, but a feed from all instances your instance is federated with. I understand why that is the case, but the fediverse really lacks a way to explore beyond your walled garden and its natural bias. Essentially this acts a mandatory content filter that I have not set up or opted in to, which I personally object to. I have the tools to show and hide what content I want to see, I don’t need it pre selected for me. Or at least give the the additional option to see a feed of all instances and communities across Lemmy / the fediverse I have not personally blocked or filtered out.

outdated_belated,

Or at least give the the additional option to see a feed of all instances and communities across Lemmy / the fediverse I have not personally blocked or filtered out.

I believe that option is possible if you set up your own instance, which, yeah, is admittedly non-trivial resource-wise (time/money/effort). Maybe slightly less non-trivial would be finding an instance that is itself fully permissive.

JWBananas, (edited )
@JWBananas@kbin.social avatar

My biggest gripe is that the all feed is not actually the all feed from across the fediverse, but a feed from all instances your instance is federated with.

It's even worse than that. It's all communities that users on your instance have subscribed with. If someone creates a new community on another instance, you won't see it on yours until you or someone else discovers and subscribes to it.

Jobe1105,
@Jobe1105@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

Well if this is what you want then you really need to choose a proper instance that suits your needs.

  1. Your instance has to have no blocked instances
  2. It needs to be a big instance so that people are searching up more things and making it more aware of other communities
xapr,

You can bypass the need for #2. See my other, longer post in this thread. You can find any community you want and make your instance aware of it (as long as the host instance is not defederated, I presume). No need to depend on others searching.

deweydecibel, (edited )

From the get-go, I’ve been saying the biggest issue with Lemmy as a decentralized platform is there will be no standard of openes or fairness to which all the admins and mods will be held to.

All of the fediverse is meant to coalesce together, but that could only happen so long as the people in charge permitted it. As usual, the technology is sound, but the human element was not taken into account.

With admins and mods on Lemmy doing whatever and shadow banning/defederating to curate how they believe their instance should be (instead of leaving that up to the users), it will be impossible for Lemmy to coalesce. Fediverse will have the illusion of a massive interconnected social network, but in reality it will be a fractured hodgepodge of fiefdoms under the rule of admins using the tools available to them to filter out any and everything, including the very votes the platform is meant to operate on.

Reddit had plenty of problems with extreme or biased moderation, but the centralized nature at least forced them to operate in the same space, where you either deleted shit or you didn’t. Everyone was in the shared version of the same shared site. With fediverse, moderation will be able to fracture that shared reality. The result will be confusion and a platform where visitors will not be seeing the same things to spite looking at the same social network, dependant entirely on the url in their task bar.

Yea sadly the “all” isn’t really all

Yeah, I initially was on lemmy.world and moved to a UK instance. I tried searching a Titanic sub on my UK instance, and it didn’t show up. But it was deffo still there on my L.W search? What? This is why I think my UK instance is a bit weird despite only being defederated from 1 instance, and hence this thread. It feels off compared to my Lemmy world feed.

xapr,

I tried searching a Titanic sub on my UK instance, and it didn’t show up. But it was deffo still there on my L.W search? What?

Ah, I learned that there’s a trick to this specific situation. If a community hasn’t been subscribed to by anyone on your instance yet, it will not show up in results when you first search for it (search by URL or !link by the way). However, wait a few seconds and hit search again - the community will now show up and you can subscribe to it! What apparently happens is that your server is not yet aware of that community, but once you search for it with a URL or !link, your server will immediately search it out and become aware of it. This is why it’s usually better to search for communities on one of the big Fediverse directory sites, especially if you’re on an instance with fewer people in it. My favorite site for this at the moment is lemmyverse.net/communities - it will show both the URL and !link right there and allow you to easily copy it to search on your instance.

GadgetGirlOz,

Great tip! Was having this problem too and this did the trick! Thanks!

Sev,
@Sev@feddit.uk avatar

Ah I did not know that nice! I’ll have a little tinker with that site and subscibe to some stuff too, hopefully that will get the Hot and Top Day stuff looking a little more healthy :)

xapr,

After I subscribed to a bunch of communities what I ended up selecting as my defaults are “subscribed” and “hot”. This seems to most closely replicate the experience from old.reddit when I was signed in. However, I noticed and also read that there’s a bug with the Hot code that shows old posts, so I end up using “new” a lot too. Sometimes I even rotate through top or top and all, to find different stuff.

can,

With the added bonus of improving the l feed for everyone on that instance.

Guess I’m gonna have to give bitwarden a go, I’ve used LastPass for years but their quality of service and value for money has plummeted.

Been using Bitwarden for a long time. Secure, easy to use and never had any problems with it.

Voroxpete,

I switched from Lastpass to Bitwarden. Couldn’t be happier.

Selmafudd,

Brah I’ve seen so many of these post asking what password manager people use and the comments filled with bitwarden replies… it could just be lots of people really interested in password managers use Lemmy or bitwarden is astroturfing. One of these seems more likely

Zagorath,
@Zagorath@aussie.zone avatar

I used LastPass up until they re-started charging for multiple devices. I was happy to pay LastPass back in like 2013 when they used to charge for multiple devices, but when they decided to bring that charge back in 2022 (or whatever year it was) they were charging an obscenely high amount for it, and frankly the UX wasn’t good enough to justify that price. On Android, more often than not I was having to go into the app to copy/paste it, because the native integration just wasn’t working.

With Bitwarden I’m back to free, and it works so much better anyway. I never looked back.

smstnitc, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

I usually break my phone within 12-18 months because they’re so damn cheaply made. Why so much glass?

If I could go back to a Treo600 I would do it in a hot second, that was a great phone. I had it for years, it was mostly plastic that I beat up quite a bit, but they use gsm bands that aren’t supported anymore.

Nobug404,

Don’t buy flagship. Glass is because it feels more luxurious.

Go for low to mid range. They are usually more plastic parts. The specs look worse on paper but unless you’re running games it doesn’t really matter.
