oSillyScope, in Which one are you?

Checkers thanks

Jake, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

@zinklog

"Best advice I ever got was an old friend of mine, a black friend, who said you have to go the way your blood beats. If you don’t live the only life you have, you won’t live some other life, you won’t live any life at all. That’s the only advice you can give anybody. And it’s not advice, it’s an observation."

James Baldwin

doug_fir, in What are your favorite leftist podcasts?

“Well there’s your problem”, about engineering disasters - it’s also a YouTube channel but there are podcast feeds and it works as audio (that’s how I listen). Also “Know your enemy” is a leftist look at the right.

szczur, in What is a beautiful concept or idea that continues to blow your mind?

Anarchism based on mutual respect and aid. It’s truly beautiful.

Caoldence222, in Why do Gezendong-style-tankies support Putin and Xi-Xinpin so much ?

Well if you’re going to be so specific as to say “genzedong-style”, maybe pay attention to the “zedong” part? Presumably they believe in socialism-with-chinese-characteristics as a path towards communism.

Putin idk, in my experience they usually only support russia insofar as it undermines the hegemony of the United States, whose consolidated power over global affairs has been a major blocker of left wing movements worldwide since ww2. But there are some who seem to take it more seriously than that and either are too caught up in the memes or legitimately don’t understand that modern russia is a capitalist hellscape.

MementoMori, in Which one are you?

All of them!

josephsh98, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

You most probably viewed these types of videos a few times and the algorithm started recommending them to you. It only takes a couple of videos for the algorithm to start recommending video of the same topic. You could easily solve this by clicking on the 3 dots next to the video and then selecting “Not interested”, do it enough times and they’ll be gone from your feed.

phorq, (edited )

Yeah, I get those too. Am always a little surprised, but I’ll be honest I’m interested in knowing what the other bubble is telling themselves… If it gets to be too much I’ll click not interested, but right now it’s just a bizarre break in my feed.

Edit: Just remembered this quote that fits “I’m fascinated by trash TV. The poet must not avert his eyes” - Werner Herzog

FiftyShadesOfMyCow,

This is the way

Lemmylefty, (edited )
@Lemmylefty@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t know how much a Not Interested designation does. I’ve done that for channels where I don’t want to see THAT video, but still like the channel in general.

What I do is just block the channel: if this is what the channel wants to espouse then I’ll do better by eliminating it entirely.

Hnazant,

My shorts is the worst. Regular seems fine. Especially the pods dunking on women. “So who should pay on the first date?”…

Viper_NZ,

I am constantly bombarded with Jordan Peterson videos despite disliking them and telling the algorithm to show less like this.

I’m not sure how it profiles people, but it sucks.

BarrelAgedBoredom,

Go into your watch history and remove them after disliking it. I find removing stuff from my watch history to have a bigger impact over disliking stuff. You can also have YouTube stop recommending specific channels to you. Odds are if they’re posting Jordan Peterson content, you’re not missing anything of value by blocking them

Viper_NZ,

The thing is I’m not sure what I’ve watched that’s triggering the JP spam.

Maybe I need to just nuke my entire history and start again.

med,

If you leave youtube/close the app everytime Jordan Peterson opens his big mouth, the algorithm will get the idea quick enough

can,

Disliking is engagement. Instead tap the three dots and select “not interested”

Viper_NZ,

I’ve been doing that too

Max_P,
@Max_P@lemmy.max-p.me avatar

This, the algorithm doesn’t care whether you like enjoy it or not, it cares whether you engage with it or not. Even dislikes are engagement.

Eldritch,

You don’t even have to watch those types of videos. I got watching Star Trek lore videos etc. And got off on to one channel in particular. Whose videos always ended up devolving into rants against SJW and leftists. This from someone who posts lore videos on a show about luxury gay space communism. But simply because of apparently a large portion of his viewership also engages with the bigotry and hatred. I started getting tons of recommendations for shit that I have never watched and would never watch.

But yes Mark not interested and delete from history was the best way to get it out.

Mereo, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

My grandfather used to tell me: “What I know is that I know nothing”. He used to tell me that even in his old age, he was still amazed by the things he discovered, just like a child. That taught me to always be humble and to understand the point of view of others and to always learn in life. So I will always remember this quote.

Thavron,
@Thavron@lemmy.ca avatar

Your grandpa must’ve been Socrates ;)

Mereo,

Haha, he must have been. We always had interesting philosophical discussions.

Today,

I love this! And the memory and impression it left you of your grandpa!

hddsx, in What replacement for each major social media do you use

Facebook - None Messenger - Signal Discord - Discord Twitter - N/A Instagram - None Skype / Zoom - Discord / Teams

jackpot,
@jackpot@lemmy.ml avatar

Revolt is foss discord, teams should be replacwd but depends on your use case

hddsx,

It took my until this year to finally disable my Facebook account - my Instagram has been disabled for a while. If it stays disabled for at least six months, I’ll finally delete it.

Why? It’s very hard to convince friends from around the world to all switch platforms when there is no major draw and most people are NOT on the new platform.

I don’t like Zoom or Teams, but there are cases in which you are forced to do so in order to interact remotely with certain customers or businesses.

It took months and multiple people to convince one of my more tech savvy friends to switch to signal.

Sure, I can make the switch. But is it worth the hassle?

baronvonjace, in What replacement for each major social media do you use

AlexWIWA, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

From the moment I understood the weakness of my flesh, it disgusted me

OtherPetard,

I craved the strength and certainty of steel. I aspired to the purity of the Blessed Machine.

AlexWIWA,

Your kind cling to your flesh as if it will not decay, and fail you. This crude biomass you call a temple, will wither, and you will beg my kind to save you.

fearout, in What is a beautiful concept or idea that continues to blow your mind?
@fearout@kbin.social avatar

The concept of emergence blows my mind.

We have this property in our universe where simple things with simple rules can create infinitely complex things and behaviours. A molecule of water can’t be wet, but water can. A single ant can’t really do anything by himself, but a colony with simple pheromone exchange mechanisms can assign jobs, regulate population, create huge anthills with vents, specialty rooms and highways.

Nothing within a cell is "alive", it’s just atoms and molecules, but the cell itself is. One cell cannot experience things, think, love, have hopes and dreams, or want to watch Netflix all day, but a human can.

The fact that lots of tiny useless things governed by really simple rules can create this complexity in this world is breathtakingly beautiful.

Kinda ties into your example :)

kenbw2,

Reminds me of the statement that you can’t dissect a rabbit to find out why it’s cute

vera,

Won’t stop me from trying [joking]

OceanSoap,

Don’t, rabbit necropsies are the worst smelling thing you’ll ever encounter.

speck,

How come? Why rabbits specifically?

OceanSoap,

Not sure why, just that I was in a building when one was being performed and it stunk up the whole place to the point I almost went home because I was going to vomit. My boss put out a bowl of liquid that neutralized the odor, thank god.

wtfeweguys,

Ok what was the liquid? That sounds useful.

acannan,

Just like the trillions of parameters that make up machine learning models that can speak or create images

Eelviny, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

Been rocking a oneplus 8 for the last two and half years, replaced the back glass a couple times and the battery once. I definitely don’t baby my phone, it’s a tool meant to be used, but overall am pretty good at not dropping things so I can reckon I’ll keep going with it until it gets too slow or something breaks.

When choosing a new phone, I usually go for something new that’s one level below the latest flagship, and check to see if LineageOS is being developed for it, as then I know it’s likely to receive software updates for long after I’ve moved on to the next.

Thing is, I like, many people here, am a techie, and I’m not afraid to install custom ROMs and open up my phone for repair. The majority of people don’t want that, so I’m really looking forward to the upcoming EU regulation on user replaceable batteries! Then it’s possible for everyone to keep their phone for longer.
