“Laugh, and the whole world laughs with you, cry… and I’ll give you something to cry about you little bastard.” -Jeff Goldblum - The Great White Hype

oSillyScope, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?

I’m pretty big on americana lately. Lots of good bands to discover. I’m also getting back into ska.

Maticzpl, in What password manager do you recommend?

Shadow, in Is there an instance to request the creation of new instances?
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

You mean communities, not instances.

Just make one and be the change you want to see. You can always give someone else mod later.

Eric_andre311,

Sorry about that, still getting use to the nomenclature here.

I’ve edited the post to fix it, thanks for the correction.

But yes I was a mod previously and realized i didn’t really have time to be a good one.

axh, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

Since there’s virtually no difference between 12mp camera and 100mp camera on phone.

There is. Those huge photos waist a lot of storage space (with virtually no difference in quality) so you want to buy a new phone with bigger storage.

HalcyonReverb,

Not if they use Pixel Binning, which Google, Apple, and Samsung all do, and I’m sure others do too. This results in my Pixel’s 48 megapixel camera generating 12 Megapixel photos, which reduces the file size.

MigratingtoLemmy, in Is there any plugin or way to block forced registration

If they keep serving a pop-up for you to register, find the JS function that does that and remove it. Or use NoScript and disable it.

But if they absolutely require logins then I’m afraid the only thing you can do is use temp emails

EggsCurrently,

That’s what I do, use uBlock Origin to filter the pop-up. Then most site disable scrolling and that can usually be countered by finding the “overflow: hidden;” and turning it into “overflow: visible;” (you can also use uBlock Origin to inject “overflow: visible !important;” into the page for it to stay persistent.

MigratingtoLemmy,

Thanks for the tip, I should try this!

Here are a few off the top of my head (though I looked up the original kanji for some of the Japanese ones)…

To enjoy life’s immensity, you do not need many things.

  • Ryōkan, a Japanese poet

Ain’t no shame in holding onto grief, as long as you make room for other things too.

  • Bubbles, from the last episode of The Wire

Honor is dead, but I’ll see what I can do.

  • Kaladin, from The Stormlight Archive Book 2 by Brandon Sanderson

Beware the difference between intelligibility and correctness.

  • Nassim Nicholas Taleb

Success consists of moving from failure to failure without loss of enthusiasm.

  • Winston Churchill

猿も木から落ちる (Saru mo ki kara ochiru)

Even monkeys fall from trees.

  • Anonymous, traditional Japanese saying

正勝吾勝 (Makatsu agatsu)

True victory is victory over one’s self.

  • Morihei Ueshiba, founder of Aikido
Kolanaki, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

We were shown an A&E biography episode on Ray Crock my freshman year of high school for career class and they quoted the dude as saying

If my competitors were drowning in a sea of gasoline, I would throw in a lit match.

Milkshake man was ice fuckin’ cold!

MonkCanatella, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community, and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no “brief candle” for me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations.

And here is Jeff Goldblum it reciting from memory

ReCursing, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?
@ReCursing@kbin.social avatar

"The best time to plant a tree is fifty years ago. The second best time is right now" - essentially don't worry about what you could have done better, or what could have been, make now and the future as good as you can

and

"If you don't fall off occasionally, you're not trying hard enough" - originally told to me in the context of learning to windsurf (I still can't windsurf), but applicable in a lot of areas. This doesn't mean try to fall off, it means failure is a natural part of growth, not something to be shunned

@animist@lemmy.one avatar

Good point. How else do you know if you’re doing it right unless you’ve done it wrong before

Hurtreynolds90, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

Pick your battles.

kvn, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

“Every path is the right path. Everything could’ve been anything else. And it would have just as much meaning.”

From the movie Mr. Nobody. It’s a good thought provoking movie despite Jared Leto.

Tyfud,

Love this movie, as you say, despite Jared Leto.

HubertManne,
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

Oh I find this one to be bs. There are incredible things in this world that could have been meh or horrible and that changes the meaning in both quality and quantity. For example when lincoln made the continued subjugation proclamation.

JimmyDean, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?

Legitimately almost every genre, as long as I’m the mood. Lately tho I’ve mostly been listening to The Fall of Troy, Blink-182, Dance Gavin Dance, This Town Needs Guns, and good ole Pro Era artists like Capital Steez and Joey Bada$$.

normalmighty, in Where do you go on Lemmy for reliable news and politics?

I would argue trying to find news on social media is the big mistake. It’s absolutely bad on Lemmy, but it’s not that much better on other platforms. Any story that isn’t a “win” for the larger portion of people on the platform will naturally struggle to get attention.

There’s a whole rabbit hole to go down in trying to find a way to get a solid, rounded and accurate view of current events, but imo step one should be to throw away social media as a news source. It’s only popular because the algorithms on other platforms will tell people what they want to hear.

imaqtpie,
@imaqtpie@sh.itjust.works avatar

God damn that’s a great point.

News is only remotely viable when done by a professional organization that at least tries to be impartial. You don’t want your news to be filtered by upvotes at the end of the day. Never really considered that.

AlexWIWA,

Yup, especially on sites like Reddit or Lemmy where voting exists. The news you see will be the news that agrees with the majority opinion of the site. This isn’t inherently negative as long as one is aware of it, but it seems too many people are unaware of their own echo chambers.

DRUMS_, in What is a beautiful concept or idea that continues to blow your mind?

Alan Watts contextualizes our daily lives as the outer, “fine spray” at the edge of the big bang --still exploding. Planets “people-ing” and your daily schedule, relationships, accuisition of goods, etc. is just the complex late stage of the big bang explosion. The explosion is chaos but as time goes by order slips in and creates “complexity”. This is all still an explosion.
