ImaginaryFox, in What replacement for each major social media do you use

I only used reddit as my big social media and then discord for messaging. Fediverse has become a good alternative to reddit, but discord will be hard to convince people to move over to alternatives like matrix or revolt.

guckfoogle, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

I’ve been an athlete since a child so in some weird way I guess I’ve been raised to just enjoy the discomfort of working out because I know the reward is tenfold of whatever discomfort I’m feeling while working out. So basically don’t raise sedentary kids, give them a love of working out so they can live a healthy and happy life.

Kalkaline, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?
@Kalkaline@lemmy.one avatar

I’m all over the place. Willie Nelson, Rodrigo y Gabriella, OutKast, The Cure, Beck, Blackalicious, B-52s, Talking Heads, Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones, James Brown, The Clash, Ray Charles, Jonny Cash, The Who, ELO, The Beatles, The Guess Who.

Basically I start with listening to different genres of music, and add them into a big playlist and keep looking for new music to add to the playlist. I love finding collaborations that bands have done and spinoff bands.

Death metal, experimental metal, vaporwave/mallsoft, witch house, and experimental punk.

I’ve been listening to a lot of Cavalera Conspiracy and Voivod lately. Polysics are pretty fun, too. Luxury Elite is a reliable vaporwave choice.

thatonedude1210, in For those that are, how are you keeping track of tropical weather this year?
@thatonedude1210@kbin.social avatar

Tropical Tidbits, Pivotal Weather, the NHC’s website, and a few others.

jflorez, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

I hate it during the workout but I love the feeling after. Problem for me is getting started

guckfoogle,

Yup, the first steps are always the hardest but once you get into a routine and start seeing results it does get very addictive, at least for me.

Mothra, in What replacement for each major social media do you use

Lemmy obvs.

Then NewPipe/freetube for YouTube. In saying this, though, I do acces YT directly if I need to post a comment or something, very occasionally. Not sure if the replacement counts as social media since they are just scrappers, you don’t really interact with others.

I use Signal for family. Couldn’t get friends to jump over. Nobody cares. Everybody loves Whatsucks.

Casual discord user, been looking at options but haven’t made up my mind yet. Probably not worth the hassle considering how little I use it

Grimlo9ic, in What is a beautiful concept or idea that continues to blow your mind?
@Grimlo9ic@kbin.social avatar

Part of the beauty and awe I get whenever I reread that famous excerpt from Carl Sagan's Pale Blue Dot is the sense of how ephemeral and delicate our existence, and even the very human concept of "existence", is. We are infinitesimally small and yet, through no fault of our own, our days, how we fill them, and the people we know hold some measure of importance to us. And it will all be gone - eventually. It's a very somber note yet it makes me feel a certain sense of peace.

"Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every 'superstar,' every 'supreme leader,' every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there--on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam."

codyofficial,

This is a beautiful quote—thank you for sharing.

Poob, (edited ) in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

If I accidently watch a Linus Tech tips video, that will be all it recommends me for the next month.

I watched a Some More News video criticizing Jordan Peterson, and Google thought “did I hear Jordan Peterson? Well in that case, here’s 5 of his videos!”

Almost all content algorithms are hot garbage that are not interested in serving you what you want, just what makes money. It always ends up serving right wing nut jobs because that conspiracy theorists watch a lot of scam videos.

Edit: my little jab at Linus has nothing to do with politics. I have no idea what his views are. I only mentioned it to point out how YouTube will annihilate my recommendations if I watch a single one of his videos.

CylonBunny,
@CylonBunny@lemmy.world avatar

I watch Linus from time to time, but don’t get that sort of recommendation (unless I watch some gun videos!). I only watch his tech stuff and don’t know anything about his politics. Now I’m worried.

Poob,

Oh I didn’t want to imply that Linus puts out political opinions. Of the few videos I’ve seen of his it’s all tech hype videos. I was only giving an example of the algorithm deciding to nuke my recommendations if I watch one of his videos.

Wahots,
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

I used to watch LTT a ton. He doesn’t disclose his political opinions, but from watching years of his live streams, it’s pretty clear he fits the PNW Canadian + American metro demographic quite well. Basically Seattle/Vancouver, you probably get the gist of it.

ilovetacos,
@ilovetacos@lemmy.world avatar

I watch Linus all the time and almost never get these recommendations. Might be a certain combination of interests?

Maslo,

I can confirm, I get pushed Linus hard. I watched like 3 or 4 of his PC build videos one time a while back. Never clicked on a WAN Show episode (his podcast). But now if I let just about any gaming/tech video roll to next, I get served entire podcast episodes of his like 25% of the time. I never asked for this, I always click off, they keep coming back. I’m not mad really just bewildered. Idk the retention must be there

Nerorero,
@Nerorero@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

To be fair, you did watch a 3 hour JP video…

Poob,

That’s my point, the algorithm doesn’t understand context.

atlasraven31, in How do you enjoy listening to digital content? Speakers? Headphones? Earbuds?

A Bluetooth speaker for the car, earbuds around town and headphones for gaming. Prefer speakers for movies.

Knightfall, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?
@Knightfall@lemmy.ca avatar

In Canada, for years, you were almost a fool for not upgrading your device every two years. The “regular” plans we all had involved a 2-yr contract in which time your phone would be paid off. But after that term was up, the monthly bill remained exactly the same. It was stupid, but a lot of Canadians just said, “Welp. Might as well upgrade then.” Then the CRTC here stepped up and told the big three carriers here to knock it off.

I had a Samsung Galaxy Note 10+ that I held onto for three and a half years. That was the longest I’d ever kept a smartphone. It was going strong too. Alas, I found out security updates were knocked down to quarterly from monthly. And after this year, it would receive nothing more. I reluctantly looked into the Galaxy S23 Ultra as a replacement and thanks to a good deal, I have that phone now. It’s an amazing device too and I hope it carries me for another 3+ years.

iamdisillusioned,

Same in the US. You’d pretty much just pay tax and could get a free phone every two years. Since that ended, I had a S7 for 4 years then only upgraded to a S9+ for a bigger screen. Every new phone I’ve ever had has been an upgrade and for the first time there’s almost no way to upgrade. I know I’m in the minority but I want an SD card slot and headphone jack; I use them all the time.

Kelsenellenelvial,

I used to do that about 10-15 years ago. I think the subsidies got to be not as good around the same time that phone prices rose sharply. Whereas you might have previously paid $200, and gotten a $500 subsidy for a $700 MSRP phone, now that $500 off a $1000+ MSRP doesn’t seem like as good a deal. I think they also widened the pricing gap between the prepaid and post paid plans, and/or started offering “discounts” for BYOD plans. Seems like the last couple upgrades the cheapest option for me now is to just buy the phone outright and then find a cheap plan.

For anyone in Saskatchewan, check out LUM mobile. It’s a Sasktel run MVNO that actually has a unique pricing structure that’s pretty competitive.
