ingy, in What's your favorite rabbit hole to go down?
@ingy@lemmy.world avatar

If you like the Titanic then go down the rabbit hole of the insurance job switcheroo with its sister ship just prior to launch…

jossbo,

There’s a great podcast about this called Did Titanic Sink? It’s entertaining as well as interesting

Illegal_Prime,

This is very interesting, but the conspiracy is almost certainly untrue. Titanic and Olympic had a lot of differences between them that wouldn’t be easy to switch. Additionally, the circumstances of the wreak don’t really lend themselves to insurance fraud, there was very little deviation from standard procedures of the time, though those procedures would prove woefully inadequate.

Pea666, in What movie scared you shitless when you were a child?
@Pea666@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly? ET scared little me more than it probably should have! That little bastard could pop up anywhere and looked even creepier when he was sick.

Hate that guy.

CynicalStoic, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

What state do you live in?

I know I’m doing good WHEN I get served this kind of content. I don’t browse YT logged in, my browser always deletes cookies upon closure, and I run Ghostery/add block plugins.

Living in Texas, I kinda assume that is why I constantly get this right wing content (ads, vid recommendations). I figure my location is all they know about me and so that is why I get served this content.

It just tells me they don’t know anything about me so my countermeasures are working 🤞🏼

He said not from America.

CynicalStoic,

Oh you’re right, totally missed that

YourFavouriteNPC, in what was your first video game/system you played or remember playing?

Duck Hunt FTW!

Still one of the best shooters ever

ArtVandelay, in what was your first video game/system you played or remember playing?
@ArtVandelay@lemmy.world avatar

Maze 3D on DOS

FollyDolly, in What's the hottest and coldest temperature you've ever been in?
@FollyDolly@lemmy.world avatar

Hottest was 100F, thought I was going to melt. Coldest was -30F with windchill, ambient air temp without wind was -6. Honeslty I’d take -30 again anyday over 100. I can layer for the cold, at 100 I wanted to take my damn skin off.

ezmack, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

I always dread doing it but once I’ve started and after I’ve finished yes

accesslog, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

Yes, I love running. I also go hiking and do body weight exercises.

To answer your question, the only way to cultivate the habit is to start something and sticking to some plan. I know it’s easy so say but it’s the only thing that works.

I do follow some runners on Instagram and YouTube for motivation.

Blaze, in Locked out of main account. 2 factor authentication not working.

This is a support question, you should have a look at the sidebar

nomoreheadphonejac, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

Yes, it lets me take my mind away from things for abit. Helps to keep me in shape as well

PancakedWaffle, in It would be nice if Lemmy had a "hide" option

Lemmy itself has this built into settings as well

PerogiBoi, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?
@PerogiBoi@lemmy.ca avatar

Those types of videos have the most engagement. YouTube is trying to show you whatever it thinks will keep you there longer.

Turns out conservative radicalization keeps people longer there. I’ve never googled or watched any Andrew Tate videos but my recommended has at least 3 videos front and center.

Moondance, in What password manager do you recommend?

Bitwarden

Royalish,

This is the way.

NPC,

There are other good options out there, think keypass, 1password and maybe dashlane. But my favourite would definitely be bitwarden

odbod,

This.

Bitwarden.

All day; everyday.

Zebov, in What is something you think leftists are not ready to hear but need to hear it?

I’d be interested to hear where communism, socialism, or any far left government has ever worked in the real world.

Because there are plenty of examples of it being a nightmare.

arktikos02,

Look up indigenous socialism. Those tend to work. They tend to get crushed by larger powers but they work internally. Unless of course you mean by work you mean be the mightiest. Yeah no.

There’s also things like the Paris commune.

Akasazh,

They tend to get crushed by larger powers

‘It works untill it doesn’t’ isn’t the best argument for the quality of a system.

cybersin,

If “Freedomville” forces “Commies R US” to close its ports, thereby severely limiting access to trade and goods, is it the fault of Commies R US?

What about if Freedomville goes and funds, trains militias inside Commies R US, which then declare war against Commies R US?

If Commies R US voted for, and elected a commie, why are they not allowed to do so?

Zebov,

Guess it was Freedomville that caused Soviet Russia and China to be so oppressive, right?

cybersin, (edited )

Socialism is an economic framework more than anything else. It’s obvious that these countries had issues, but saying they were all caused by the way they distribute money is a bit of a stretch.

These countries took bits and pieces of leftwing policies, and then added their own rubbish on top. They don’t really represent the modern left, just as the US pre-Civil Rights doesn’t represent the ideals of most in the US now. Oppressive social policies exist or have existed under every flavor of government. It’s certainly not limited to, or an integral of the left.

Authoritarianism is not Socialism.

Zebov,

So where has the left functioned successfully in the real world?

cybersin, (edited )

Many countries have implemented left wing policies with success.

The government of Norway owns a large percent of its resource extraction and oil industry. The revenues are used to provide social services such as free healthcare and education to its citizens.

You obviously won’t find Norway on this list, but feel free to scroll through and see if you can find a pattern.

Hardeehar, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

I only enjoy it after I’m done with it. Never before or during the workout. I still do it, just it’s pulling teeth everyday.
