Not necessarily.
A few years ago, when there was another Reddit Exodus people were suggesting to go to voat. But holy hell was that place toxic.
And tbh, maybe I just picked the wrong instance to sign up on, but right now, I feel like lemmy is more toxic than Reddit, too, despite still being a fraction of the size.
And people say to just not care about it. But it kinda does matter. Bullying and brigading can create an in-group and the rest. To the point that you can sway public opinion, even elections. tl;dr: OP makes a valid point
You think Lemmy is more toxic than reddit? I’ve seen the opposite so far. I wonder if this boils down to what communities we are a part of? It makes sense though, since most of lemmy is likely 30+ yrs old and have become jaded by reddit already.
Also, yes, voat was awful. It was mostly alt right assholes from what I remember.
the development on voat was incredible. once the hoards moved it went off a cliff within hours or a day or two.
I am fairly sure it is because of the instance I picked. when I click on Local instead of Subscribed my mood goes down. once in a while there is some spillover, and it seems to be following quite specific topics. So either I am out of touch with today’s youth (if the crowd on my home instance is representative), or there is a bias of the active users there and they are hungry for those topics.
As I get older, I enjoy it more. It’s a reminder that I’m not as old a bastard as I feel some days, and I know the benefits are real, noticeable, and literally life changing. And at that moment I’m the youngest I’ll ever be for the rest of my life, so it’s a good time to do it.
Maybe I don’t love the specific moment that my muscles are on fire but perspective keeps me happy while doing it
My brain. Comes up with the whackiest excuses for why this-and-that password would be a great choice and how easy it would be to remember, only to later explain to me rationally why it was the wrong choice and how I should’ve known I’d forget it. Then again, that’s just extra security. If it’s only stored in my internal memory and even I can’t remember it, no one else is getting in for sure.
I ended up using a vertical monitor + Zotero for note taking (allows you to highlight text and write comments). My ereader is small enough to be convenient but too small to read papers well. My tablet, I hate writing on screens and it’s also too small
There are OS updates and there are security updates. Check with your manufacturer as these periods may be quite short, and considering how tied our finances and porivate info are to our phones, it could be a huge hazard. Most android manufacturers, for example, I think offer 2 years of OS updates and 3 or 4 years of security updates. Apples does 6 and 8 - which is wild to me for all the talk of Android users about FOSS and privacy and security. Samsung does 4 and 5, which IIRC, is one of the highest in the android world.
I’m certain someone will mention GrapheneOS, so let me get ahead of that: You can completely de-google your android phone and get as many years of OS upgrades as your hardware can physically support… but is the average person really going to do that?
Apple doing software updates for such an extended period of time is wild, considering how anti-consumer they are in the first place (bad repairability, walled garden, bizarre prices).
Google does 5 years updates for the pixel phones, which is to be expected since they own android lol.
Reminds me of the occasions when iphone customers complained about their battery draining faster / their phones lagging after a software update for years, and just recently apple responded: “you can have battery or features not both lol”.
Regarding features: Usually good software development makes the software more performant over time, not less. But customers are expected to react to excessive DRM measures (like denuvo) or the uprising telemetry hell (like windows 11) with buying more performant hardware. Yields the question what is a (desired) feature and what is a bug, AND what is a cash cow for companies milking their customers.
development makes the software more performant over time, not less
Yeah but they will focus on the newer hardware. And new features might based on new hardware capabilities that might not be on the older hardware or requires workarounds that are worse.
I believe some comedian suggested to respond with a similar vulgar question about their sex life. I think that’s a fair point.
Tho you can always ask them if their first question to a stranger is a deeply personal one to get their own perversions fed. That way you are still on the high horse :)
