slimsalm, in What password manager do you recommend?

I use keepassxc, works well for me.

SecretPancake, in What password manager do you recommend?

Been using 1Password since 2010. I tried Bitwarden a few years ago just because of the price. In theory it ticks all boxes but it was a pain to use. I does not flow like 1P, some things did not work the way I expected and it looks like shit. Don’t ask for details because I forgot. So I switched back. The new design of 1Password made it a little worse but it’s still great and the integration into iOS and macOS is amazing.

moopet,
@moopet@kbin.social avatar

1Password has some nice features (like it reads QR codes off the page and automatically handles 2FA for you, which is clever, but not necessarily the "2" in "2FA" you were hoping for) but it also has a lot of weird UI decisions that make it confusing to use, especially in a shared company environment.

It is a lot better than it was before though, now it's cross-platform (it used to be exclusively AppleSuperiorityComplexWare), but it's still not open source.

Fthisguy, in What butterfly effect have you personally witnessed?

I’ll just say as a guy that does construction and remodeling, there is no better place to witness the butterfly effect than in a house with lazy framers. Any one of the contractors being lazy can often times be cause effects down the road .

MrShankles,

Would you like that square to the door, or square to the ceiling? You can’t have both

Barbacamanitu,

I’m also in the construction industry, and you’re so right. Good framing helps makes every step afterward go much more smoothly. Fixing bad framing with drywall mud and trim is hell.

BeelzAlBob, in Does anyone else struggle with silence, particularly when trying to sleep?

Same problem. I just use a box fan though for white noise.

momentary, (edited ) in What would Twitter look like with an absolute number of Likes in the system?

I would predict even more botting would be used to influence likes/dislikes as limiting them would make them even more influential.

I’d also bet on their being even more useless comments saying expressing people’s like or dislike of something, which might be good for engagement numbers but bad for overall conversation.

meteotsunami, in What would Twitter look like with an absolute number of Likes in the system?

Social media is supposed to be the digital commons. Without a dislike button, then the media cannot be a commons. You go to the town square and start spouting offensive bullshit you’re going to get the proverbial rotten tomatoes thrown at you, mockery, and getting shunned.

With only having a like button, Twitter amplifies the message of bad actors and encourages rage responses. That’s the point though isn’t it? Engagement metrics to sell rage at a discount instead of the whole normal population buying a post with dislikes and moving on.

ch00f, in What's a true fact that is so misleading it's borderline misinformation?

Switching from a 5mpg truck to a 10mpg truck does more for the environment than switching from 40mpg car to a 55mpg car.

Linssiili,

How is that misleading, isn’t it true?

ferrousfair,

More outrageous sounding, switching from a 5 mpg truck to a 10 mpg truck saves more gas than switching from a 50 mpg car to a 100 mpg car

youtu.be/oLQmwOX6Xds

Linssiili,

I still don’t understand hot that statement is “misleading”?

ferrousfair,

Well a lot of people would think gaining 50 mpg is way better than gaining 5 mpg, since it’s 10x as much, but really it just shows that you can’t use mpg as a unit to compare like that

absGeekNZ,
@absGeekNZ@lemmy.nz avatar

This is why the rest of the world uses l/100km (liters per 100 kilometers), the comparison is linear and thus comparable between different vehicles in a simple manner.

  • 5mpg = 20g/100mi
  • 10mpg = 10g/100mi
  • 40mpg = 2.5g/100mi
  • 55mpg = 1.82g/100mi

The difference between 10 and 20g is easy to see as a lot bigger than the difference between 2.5 to 1.82g. 15 is a much bigger number than 5, but that 15 is relative to the initial mpg rating

In fact going from 5mpg to 10mpg is better than going from 10mpg to 100mpg, a 10g saving vs a 9g saving…the more you know

Therefore,

Environmental damage from emissions doesn’t care about relative efficiency, 15 free miles is objectively more than 5 free miles.

absGeekNZ,
@absGeekNZ@lemmy.nz avatar

It you travel 50 miles at 5mpg, you use 10g of fuel At 10mpg you use 5g…a saving of 5g

40mpg uses 1.25g 55mpg uses 0.91g a saving of 0.34g much less of a saving.

4am,
@4am@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah but if you’re already driving the more efficient vehicles to begin with…

planforrain,

but if we are trying to save the world getting the lowest mpg vehicles off of the road first will have a stronger effect

if you already drive a 30mpg car and you are ready to upgrade then definitely look for better efficiency but I think we should have incentives in place to get cars that operate at for instance 16 mpg (my first car for instance, 1996 Chevy blazer, now deceased) replaced by even 10 year old models which are much more efficient

ch00f,

The ask was

What would be some fact that, while true, could be told in a context or way that is misinfomating or make the other person draw incorrect conclusions?

illegalbat, in How has ur lemmy experience been so far?

Like others have said I’m going to miss the niche subreddits and the thousand different cat subs lol

Obeyyourbrain,
@Obeyyourbrain@lemmy.ml avatar

Yeah, same. But that’s why we’re gravitated here. To grow those gardens back.

JonnyRobbie,

That only happens when reddit doubles down on the api charges. If they stand back to make it barely usable, the migration will slowly stop imho. I really wish reddit would die, but at the end of the day, I’ll be part of the problem when I’ll probably stay where the bigger community potential will be.

Zadkine, in Why are people anti Facebook joining the fediverse?

Basically this: en.wikipedia.org/…/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguis…

First they will add loads of new users and become the dominant instances. Then, they will add their own proprietary features that other instances cannot support. Finally, their extensions become the new de-facto standard, marginalizing the original implementations.

Since Meta has proven itself to be an evil company that does not act in good faith, it is better to not federate with them from the start.

g5pw,

Exactly this. In a federated network, the instance with the majority of users could dictate the protocol, forcing the smaller issues to continually adapt or die. See this post for a very real example of this.

Gsus4,

But why do the current lemmy instances have to die if facebook decides to make ActivityPub+goldextra? We’ll just stay on our branch, maybe lose a few users who should know better. Facebook isn’t even making use of ActivityPub’s federation anyway, which is why we are here.

I’m actually afraid that they won’t defederate at some point but find some way to track the activities of the federated servers.

Dr_Cog,
@Dr_Cog@mander.xyz avatar

Becsuse you don’t move to the next phase until you reach a milestone. The embrace is the first step, to convert a small percentage of users of the original platform. Once you have those, you extend your features to have those users recruit more users to that specific instance or implementation, since they are more feature-rich or stable or whatever. Then once you have a critical point of users on your instance, you defederate from all others and develop your walled garden which now has all the users and the content.

jcit878, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

for me, yes, when cycling. its a form of meditation to me and you can always back off if it gets too hard or exhausting. im working on my climbing now which is definitly challenging me but its also good for building that mental fortitude of ‘head down, just peddle dont think’. its done wonders for me mentally, as well as physically

negativeyoda, in Does anyone else struggle with silence, particularly when trying to sleep?

I have horrible tinnitus after years of searing guitars. I have to sleep with a white noise machine or I am completely tweaked

LachlanUnchained,

I feel like I am the same. I love worry about my hearing in ten years time.

macwinux, in Why is youtube recommending conservative "talking points" to me?

I bought a new phone a few months back, and just for shits and giggles I tried looking at YouTube Shorts without any account logged in. I clicked on a food Shorts, and within 5 Shorts, I got a “manosphere” video, and within 10 Shorts I got Ben Shapiro.

Unfortunately, fear and rage drive engagement, and these Conservative grifters are more than happy to give it to them and more. That on top of corporations being Capitalists and thus right-wing by default.

jininjin, in Are you replacing Reddit with Lenny?

How do you find your favorite community? Can’t anything yet. I’m using connect on Lemmy.world. every search ends up with nothing much.

OtakuAltair,
@OtakuAltair@lemmy.world avatar

Idk about connect, but most comms I want to join do pop up from a search in wefwef/Voyager

You can also straight up migrate from your reddit subs to lemmy comms through wefwef/Voyager now which is pretty cool

jininjin,

I’ll try that. I just subscribed to like 10 comms and I only see one for some reason. Can’t figure this out lol. Seems buggy.

hsl, in what was your first video game/system you played or remember playing?
@hsl@wayfarershaven.eu avatar

Sim Farm on MS-DOS. I’m pretty sure it came on a 5 1/4 floppy disk.

I vaguely remember an Atari and Pong, but that’s so hazy that I can’t be too sure.

Aussiemandeus, in What password manager do you recommend?
@Aussiemandeus@lemmy.world avatar

I use Samsung notes. Save all my passwords in there, they’re all different and strings of words with characters in them etc.

Then i lock the note with one secure password.

kvvy,

I'd switch to something like BitWarden.

Um… I dont think that’s a password manager…

arin,

Samsung has Samsung Pass for an actual password manager
