Wahots, in Can someone still viewing Reddit explain how it is doing as of right now in terms of content quality and engagement?
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Pre ban, it’s quality was down for sure. More smaller threads, weird questions that usually get left on the cutting room floor, all that. Reddit survived this, but much like someone surviving a life-threatening disease, they might not be truely 100% ever again. I believe this is just the first of many bad step reddit may take as they IPO and try to get more money out of people, I’d imagine. A slow decline, like twitter.

Nice try, QI elf!

Wahots, in Easier-to-Pronounce Variants of the Name Vitalii

Vito is probably the easiest for your average “what’s your name?” Queries at a coffeeshop. But I think Vitaly would also work since it’s just the word “Vital” with a Y added to the end. I’m sorry you had to move because of the Russians :(

Vitaly,
@Vitaly@feddit.uk avatar

I think Vito is pretty cool name, now they can actually call me, lol Yeah i hate russians because of this, i cant even explain what they’ve done to my country Thank you for your support

Skooshjones, in Lemmy, what is the scariest/creepiest/eeriest experience you have had while travelling?
@Skooshjones@vlemmy.net avatar

My spouse and I had a very long layover between red eye flights and decided to get a ride to a nearby motel to catch a few hours of sleep before going back to the airport early in the morning to catch our next flight. This was in a southern state in the US.

It turned out to be a super sketchy motel and it was really late at night when we got there. We could tell it was in a rough part of the city, driving past houses on the street all had bars over the windows and doors, lots of trash blowing across the street, stuff like that.

We go inside to sign in and get our room and the clerk mumbles something we can’t understand and asks us to wait for a few minutes. Then while we’re sitting in the lobby, a huge pickup truck pulls up outside with a white guy driving it. Two Hispanic guys get out of the cab, an older man and a boy. They walk in and start talking quietly with the clerk. They both seemed really nervous and kept glancing nervously at the pickup running outside. After a few minutes the clerk led them both away somewhere and then the truck drove away and the clerk called us up and signed us in.

I think it might have been some kind of human trafficking/smuggling thing, but idk. It just was so weird, everybody involved was acting really nervous and on edge. I hope both of them are alright, we obviously never saw them again or even saw where they got led off to.

Saigonauticon, in Atheists/agnostics of Lemmy, do you believe in the existence of souls?

It seems like a way to take all the things I don’t understand particularly well, and put them in a category that I fail to define precisely.

My preference is not to do that, because I have a hard time believing in something that I can’t characterize reasonably well.

spicydogleg, in What can Lemmy federate with?

In theory yes Lemmy should federate with them all of course to be sure if it works on a per instance level you could always try it, As not all mastodon instances seem to work with Lemmy for some reason

trymeout,

Does the mastodon instance need to be up to date for it to work?

Saigonauticon, in Why is my food making lightning?

You have angered Thor by putting metal objects in the sacred container.

cwagner, in What Will Be the Singularity Endgame: Utopia, Dystopia, Collapse, or Extinction? Why?

Utopia, I believe in the robots. It’s a bit of a shame none of us humans will be around, but that’s life.

Lubricate7931, in What's a true fact that is so misleading it's borderline misinformation?

human and chimp DNA is 98.8 percent the same

unknowing8343,

I don’t know the exact number, but, come on! Look at those guys! They are basically hairy humans with a slightly less complex system of communication.

Lubricate7931,

Yep but the point is the 1.2% represent millions of gene pairs and the ones we share are not always present or expressed in the same way. So just sharing genes doesn’t necessarily mean were the same or they do the same thing.

www.amnh.org/…/dna-comparing-humans-and-chimps

Yeah chimps are one of our very few (very very) distant cousins left. But i think they rip more faces off than us

If you have a complicated health issue or emergency, the legislative branch of government dictates your potential treatment.

(Most reputable practitioners will temper their recommendations based upon the professional risk involved.)

lotanis,

This is maybe true in the US. Don’t forget that people from all over the world are on here.

j4k3,
@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar

Still holds true either way. If the doctor is or is not at great risk of legal consequences, it will greatly impact your care. I have a complicated case with lots of small spinal damage that all adds up to partial disability. All reputable neurosurgeons here spend five minutes reading the radiology summary from a MRI and walk away from anything that is not easy like my case. It is just too much legal liability to take on hard cases. If you live in a region where it is safer for the doctor to treat difficult cases with impunity, you will likely get better, or at least more, care. In the real world, the legal system plays a major role in medical treatments. No one is throwing away or risking their entire career on your case. Skipping context, your healthcare really is determined by Judges either way. Learning this the hard way sucks.

ratboy, in Adaptogens and Autism
@ratboy@lemmy.ml avatar

So there are a bunch of different things in this post thay seem to need answers so Ill try my best to find resources for you.

First off, neuroprotection is defined as “the relative preservation of neuronal structure and/or function”. So we have thousands if not millions of neurons in our body, and each neuron releases neurotransmitters such as endorphins, serotonin, dopamine etc. To be absorbed by other neurons which affect our mood and bodily functions.

Some fungi, such as Lions mane mushrooms have been shown to potentially aid in neuron growth and improve symptoms of alzheimers. In this way they can be neuroprotective.

Now, it has been found that autistic people experience synaptic pruning at a much, much lower rate than neurotypical people. Synapses are like little connectors that help neurons communicate with eachother. As infants we all experience synaptic overgrowth, then we experience synaptic pruning which gets rid of less efficient connections.

Knowing that, my brain goes to thinking that if anything Lions mane might reinforce some aspects of autism! That’s just my first thought though and is probably inaccurate.

I don’t know much about how adaptogens work, and I’ve never really considered a connection to autism before but I did a little digging but there seems to be no real research on this. From my limited understanding, adaptogens seem to work similar to how ingesting vitamins and minerals might work, or coffee or tea. They also cover a broad range of herbs and fungi and they all work differently.

Do you mind explaining how the cordyceps tea made you feel “less autistic”? So far there is no research indicating that there is or will be any “cure” for autism or way to “rewire your brain” to get rid of your autism. If anything, it is likely that adaptogens might help you feel calmer or more focused, where the stress or anxiety might be caused by overstimulation experienced due to autism. So like the overstimulation may remain but they may help to manage it more effectively. Does that make sense?

sinewyshadow,

Yes, that’s makes sense. When I get really happy or excited I’ll stim. When I drank the cordyceps tea, it was similar to being high, but my body and mind were calmer. Same effect with Tulsi tea. I know Tulsi tea has linalool in it. which is also in Marijuana. When I drink Tulsi or Cordyceps tea, it feels like my vision and brain are in a bubble, or I’m looking through a fishy eye lens if that makes sense. What I’m hoping, is that adaptogens just block certain receptors and aren’t really changing the brain at all.

ratboy,
@ratboy@lemmy.ml avatar

Dang that’s cool, I’ll have to try some! Yeah, I mean they do affect how your brain functions in the moment, similar to coffee, green tea, alcohol, etc. But it seems that there may be more long term changes, if we look at the lions mane example. Sounds like a super interesting thing to do a deep dive on, though! Idk if there is a whole lot of scientific literature on them but I like to find peer reviewed scientific articles. If you read just the abstract and the conclusion you usually are able to get the info you’re looking for

sinewyshadow,

The long term is what I’m slightly concerned about.

ratboy,
@ratboy@lemmy.ml avatar

What exactly are you concerned about? Like are there any particular outcomes that scare you? I doubt that anything you take would make a huge, substantial, permanent change that you would notice, but again this is all just my assumption but I’ve taken reishi, kava, ginseng, all kinds of tea etc and I haven’t noticed drastic changes after my body metabolizes it

So apparently Peertube works well, in part because the structure of the two platforms map onto each other well. Communities -> Posts -> Comments = Channels -> Videos -> Comments.

I experimented once, and from memory you can definitely subscribe to a peertube channel here. But I don’t know my way around peertube so I don’t know how well it works.

OceanSoap, in Which music streaming app should I use?

Do you mean because they host Joe Rogan?
