sylverstream, in Which music streaming app should I use?

Tried many, but stuck with Deezer as it has got excellent pod cast support.

Had many issues with offline support with Spotify, and their support was horrible.

OceanSoap, in Lemmy, what is the scariest/creepiest/eeriest experience you have had while travelling?

Hmm, creepy…

Not really creepy, but the scariest thing to happen to me was traveling through Europe with two friends, we’re all women. We arrive in Paris and exit the metro and ride the escalator up to the street, and froze. It was, according to the directions on the hostel website, the correct metro stop, but the area immediately felt dangerous to the three of us. The space surrounding the elevators were encased by chain-link fencing, and bodies were pressed against them all up and down the sides. There were fights breaking out, yelling, etc, and it was mostly men. I don’t have problems with men or anything, but… yeah, it was scary.

So we stand there for a bit trying to figure out what to do. The directions on the website said to exit the metro and follow the building numbers “up” to get to the hostel, which was a good 15 minute walk for us. So we decide, okay, no biggie, we’ll exit the fence area and just start heading in a direction and follow the numbers on the buildings, figure out which way is which and just bolt ahead without stopping to talk with anyone.

And that’s what we do. Except every single number on the side of every building is 18. Over and over again as we walk, it’s all 18. And we can’t see any other numbers. So we pause, because there was no other direction on the website, just “follow the numbers up”, but there was no “up” or “down”, just 18.

We stand there for a few minutes trying to figure out what to do. I was the only one who had traveled overseas before, and the other two started to seriously panic, and I know I had to make some kind of decision, because we didn’t feel safe just standing there and if the panic really set in for them this would become much harder.

These two men walk by, and one of them catches the terrified look of one of my friends, and asks in perfect (but british-accented) English: “Are you ladies okay? Are you lost?” And we’re like: “Yes! Do you know how to get to this hostel?” And he looks at the name and says: “Yes, I know where this is, and you’re going in the wrong direction.” Then he pauses and says: “This area is pretty dangerous, its on our way, we can show you.” Then, he points down this particularly dark (it was daytime), narrow alley and says: “we’re just stopping by a place to eat this way, would you like to come?”

And this was where a decision had to come in. On one hand, the area we were in wasn’t good, and even though we knew which direction to head in now, I didn’t feel safe walking there. I didn’t feel very safe walking back to the metro we’d just left 3 or so blocks down. On the other hand, I didn’t really feel much better following a random guy and his friend down a dark alley in hope he might be telling the truth and escort us to our hostel after eating.

Literally, in my head I’m running the chance of us fighting these two guys off if they attack. I could get in a good hit, and my one friend is perry strong and capable, but my other friend would be useless. So I’m thinking of some sort of defence plan where I both help my one friend fight but also pull my other friend out if the way, because yeah, we decided to follow these guys into the dark alleyway of Paris and hope he was as kind and harmless as he seemed.

We got to the Caffe and sit down for a nice lunch and his friend goes to the restroom. And the guy tells us how they’re artists and paint giant murals on the sides of large buildings, and he was super nice. Eventually I asked if his friend was okay cause he was in the bathroom for a while and he told me yeah, that he’s just shooting up in there.

Oh, okay.

We ate lunch and they escorted us to the hostel and we give him some snacks we brought from home as a thank you and they were off.

And there was a fucking metro station right in front of the hostel! One that was NOT listed anywhere on the hostel website. Fuck that hostel, never again!

I’d go back to Paris though, 9/10, it was a good time.

oehm,

What was the deal with the fights outside the chain link fencing?

OceanSoap,

I don’t know, it was weird. Lots of people had towels on the ground with a bunch of random items on them, trying to sell the stuff I think, but it wasn’t in an arranged way that a flea market would be. At one point a huge fight broke out and a group of people scattered about just picked up all their stuff in one big scoop and ran off, but others stayed and it was kind of chaotic. The fights were like heavy pushing and shouting back snd forth and stuff. No knife fights that I saw or anything.

Still, it was scary!

blackbrook,

Did you ever find out what was up with the 18s? That´s some twilight zone shit!

OceanSoap,

I think we asked, but I don’t remember what the explanation was. I’ll reach out to my friend to see if she remembers.

To this day, the hostel we stayed at in Paris is the worst of all that I’ve stayed at before, and I’ve stayed in a lot! The employees weren’t very friendly, and I found most of the people in the city friendly in general, so… it was an off trip, lol.

Have you tried Apple Music Yet?

Gumby,

I hate I phones and most things Apple. Maybe I am being stubborn? Is it worth looking into, even on an android?

Communist, in Atheists/agnostics of Lemmy, do you believe in the existence of souls?
@Communist@lemmy.ml avatar

I don’t think soul has a good enough definition to say whether or not it does exist.

Soul kinda just means nothing to me.

NENathaniel, (edited ) in Which music streaming app should I use?
@NENathaniel@vlemmy.net avatar

I’ve used Spotify, Deezer, Tidal, Apple Music, YouTube Music, and Amazon Music

Id rank them:

Apple Music

Spotify

Amazon Music (hot take I know)

Deezer

YT Music

Tidal (expensive and didn’t like the UI

On Android/Windows btw

BendyLemmy, (edited ) in Atheists/agnostics of Lemmy, do you believe in the existence of souls?
@BendyLemmy@lemmy.ml avatar

I think ‘soul’ is not something which exists in itself - it is the idea of the essence of a thing, the thing which causes an individual life.

So theories go around that there are spiritual beings separate from the physical (debatable) and I personally think that it extends to all life, such that trees can have awareness which can also extend beyond their physical bodies.

As such, they obviously exist - but their exact definition and nature is quite hard to grasp. I don’t think they can survive physical death.

A couple, I think. WoTshow is one I really liked. And exatheist is a tiny sub where a bunch of people who were once atheists of all different religions talk religious philosophy.

sj7trunks, in Ultrawide monitor users, convince me to become one of you by answering these 3 simple questions.

A1: LG HDR WQHD A2: Yes A3: it uses two sources, not sure what you mean by 1 source unless you mean 1 source has two separate hdmi cables and if that’s the case then yes. The only other way is to use something like xrandr for linux

Love the ultra wide and would probably go for a newer variant. The only thing I don’t like is using kvm switches with these monitors because the systems go to sleep and the monitor turns off. This means that I’m always fussing about trying to wake the computer/kvm with multiple key presses until it wakes up. Not unique to ultra wide but more noticeable when using these screens usually mean you want more than one source.

webghost0101,

I am pretty new to linux so i didnt know about xrandr. I’ve spend the last hour trying to get this to work just to split my 1440 monitor in 2 parts as a test. If i can get that to work than it would solve all my worries in an instant because i could just write a script to have it however i want with no extra cables attached. I haven’t gotten it to work though and even Gpt-4 admits xrandr can be rather finicky. Thanks for the tip though, i am not done trying.

daq2, in Which music streaming app should I use?

I know YouTube Music got a lot of shit from the fans of the previous service, Google Play Music, but over the last year they’ve added most features back and YTM works really well. I also get YouTube ad free, although I’ve had it so long, I don’t know if that’s still part of the deal

FVVS, (edited )
@FVVS@l.lucitt.com avatar

The reason why I can’t recommend YouTube music is that it uses audio from videos instead of playing the studio versions of the tracks. The fact that it makes me listen to those silly audio parts in music videos while I’m trying to listen to a studio release is terrible in my opinion, and I couldn’t figure out a way to hide those results from search entirely. Does anybody know if they’ve fixed this?

clutch,

I noticed this, too. But I think it’s a matter of how the search algorithm works along with a smaller streaming library than other services. First it checks the first party audio that YT has streaming rights to. If it doesn’t find it there, then it goes to the general uploads. And that’s where you start getting the music video audio instead of the studio version.

I’ve also found it will offer me playlists uploaded by users that match my search results.

Rhodamine,

I use YouTube Music and this (usually) isn’t a problem if you have premium. The only times I’ll get the music video audio instead of the studio track is if I’ve liked the music video on YouTube. In that instance it’ll sometimes show up in my automatically generated Playlist. For me, it’s worth it for the huge music library that YouTube Music has.

Jimmhead,

I don’t think this is true, I only ever get audio from videos in some community playlists, it definitely doesn’t do this for me by default. Maybe it’s a setting somewhere?

Rhodamine,

I just did a bit of research and it looks like if you have a free account it will almost always play the Youtube video instead of the album version (possibly as an attempted foil for ad-blockers?).

xuv,

It’s not exactly the same but you can use the SponsorBlock addon to skip the non-music segments of music videos when playing in browser, and for Android there’s a fork of NewPipe that has this integrated.

Hey, you should be able to search for it, this may help you: lemdit.com/post/18035

I am able to find it from vlemmy: https://lemdit.com/pictrs/image/793db052-d902-40b2-8e41-f9b2fc41a402.png

Note that it won’t show up in the search results if you are not logged in.

NBCooks,

Basically the community shows up when I search from worlds as over 1k subs but just 9 from vlemmy. I guess that is the number of local subs from each instance?

delendum, (edited )
@delendum@lemdit.com avatar

Yes, it just means that there are 9 people from vlemmy that have subbed to that community. This bit is a bit confusing, for example if nobody had subbed to it yet from vlemmy then it would show 0 subs.

NBCooks,

You are right. Maybe it is an app issue? Let me see if I can figure out how to post a screenshot
