I know this opinion is wildly unpopular, but I think pirating is unethical. If you can’t afford something, or you disagree with spending money for it, then fine. Don’t watch that show/listen to that song/play that game. But the people who make things deserve to get paid. It’s not right to refuse to pay for something while also consuming that content. Many of the justifications for pirating just feel like entitlement to me.
But at the same time, deflating the sales of the product has the risk of prompting the company to not continue with a franchise or employ those developers in the future.
I think there's many contributing factors. I actually was thinking about the same thing before I found your post, and the answer that came to mind outside of some of the ones people posted here was:
It feels like a breath of fresh air because we're outside the Walled Garden. We're not trapped on a platform who's soul has been crushed and wrung for every penny's worth like Reddit or Twitter. And we can see that there is a world on the Internet besides the Walled Garden and that fact is very liberating. It makes you feel like you don't have to go back.
can’t really be worse than before given that there was barely content being posted to begin with. have been pleasantly surprised to see very little “le narwhal bacons when?” shit so far, but that’s me being a grouch and doesn’t really constitute etiquette
I dunno, we've had some trash get popular over the years, but I kinda enjoy the "absurd surrealism" meme culture we've got now where nobody bats an eye at hearing the phrase "shadow money wizard gang," which is in fact a real thing.
i suppose i’m burned out from doomscrolling threads flooded with those kind of call/response in-jokes (another user down the thread linked some more relevant examples), very glad it’s less egregious here atm
I assumed OP would be willing to say it it was "just" that. This being the Internet and all, people admit to way weirder stuff all the time.
When I was a Boy Scout, we often had kids who would refuse to go. It was a whole thing that we had to check on. (Along with asking everyone how yellow their pee was.)
I remember one guy was in tears on the hike out, and it turned out that he had faked out the scoutmaster by taking a walk with the TP and shovel, but not actually gone. Poor kid was barely able to walk, but kept insisting he couldn't void either.
I only learned later how serious it can get if prolonged.
Nice analogy thanks. Sure, everyone has email, but most don't engage with it much and it doesn't really have communities.
Well, to think of it, mailing lists of old would be similar to communities.
Torn between replying with "this!" as a meme about how generic responses like that are used to farm karma and making a joke about how "of course someone with only 1 reputation point would say there's no karma equivalent." Idk how reputation works and if its only internal to instances or a shared across instances. But its possible it does become a karma equivalent in the future.
It adds your comment to my profile feed if anyone is following me. I think it's a way to work better with Mastodon like sites but I don't really know. I understand that @ernest is in the midst of changing that.
Lol, I think the first one would definitely have flown over my head without explanation. Also, I don't know if it's instance specific, but I can't seem to find my reputation on my profile, neither on feddit.de(lemmy-ui) or Jerboa. Where do you get that information?
Maybe it could be useful for moderators or admins to access that information? But that also poses the risk of accounts "reputation-farming" like on reddit to sell the account to some bot-farm that uses it for astro-turfing or sth similar.
There is a thing called Reputation (IIRC) tucked away in your profile. Im not sure if that's a true karma equivalent. Also not sure what you can do with it.
