UlfarrOT, in what should I do with this pile of old (wiped) hard drives?
@UlfarrOT@lemmy.world avatar

Take them apart. It's fun to play with the little disks inside

And they have cool magnets.

Fondots,

I used to have a lot of keys on my keychain and normally kept them clipped to a belt loop with a carabiner. To keep them from jingling too much I used to keep a hard drive magnet that I scavenged from somewhere stuck to them. Not all of my keys were magnetic but enough of them were and the magnet was strong enough that I could sandwich the non magnetic ones between the other ones and they'd all stick together.

It disappeared on me one day, probably stuck to some metal lamp post or something that I happened to brush up against.

I need to check how magnetic my current keys are to see if it could work, but I think if I ever find myself with another magnet of an appropriate size and strength, I might revisit that idea and put the magnet in a small leather fob or something to keep my keys from jingling.

confetti_8tVST5, in What piece of wisdom about life are you able to provide others?

Backup everything important using the 3,2,1 rule...I learned that the hard way

brakebreaker101,

What exactly is that method?

Vlyn,
@Vlyn@lemmy.ml avatar

Too lazy to type it myself, so from Google:

The 3-2-1 backup strategy simply states that you should have 3 copies of your data (your production data and 2 backup copies) on two different media (disk and tape) with one copy off-site for disaster recovery.

“Disk and tape” is a bit outdated, but you get the gist. A good strategy could be your main computer, your phone, some cloud drive (so it’s in another location).

Chocrates, in I need to survive for 3 days without pooping, and eating as little as possible. I can pee, but not very often. It can't take up too much space. What food do I pack?

Just don't eat and mainline kaopectate?

mcpheeandme,

OP could get constipated by doing a bunch of opioids. Obviously not recommended.

SavvyWolf, in What will happen to Brave browser after the manifest change?

Out of interest, since Chromium is open source, is there anything stopping Opera, Edge, Brave, etc. just mantaining support for the old manifest? Like, I'm not sure why this is such a big deal for anything other than Chrome and Chromium.

heartlessevil,

Because nearly 90% of users use Chrome or a derivative thereof. People can make a V3 version for Chrome and a V2 version for other browsers, but the APIs are nowhere near compatible, so it's a lot of extra work. If you just make a V3 version, it will work on any updated browser.

wildeaboutoskar, in What are some good ways to be less depressed?
@wildeaboutoskar@lemmy.world avatar

Things that help me:

  • Having a routine- every Sunday I walk into town and get a nice coffee/cake and read for a while and just be around people. If I stay inside for too long I will start to self isolate.
  • Hobby- I go to a couple of choirs during the week. It helps me get out of the house and it's an activity that stops me dwelling on things. You're usually too busy focusing on the music to think of anything else. Singing also helps you regulate your breathing which is supposed to help with relaxation and sleeping.
  • Spend time in or around nature, even if that's a pet. Being around green space can help ground you. Being around animals can be a massive boost. Go to the park with a book and spot dogs.
  • Medication - this has helped me more than anything but isn't for everyone. I also had a few rounds of therapy but didn't get loads out of it, but it may well work for you.

wildeaboutoskar, in I'm obviously old. what is this "rule" trend I'm seeing everywhere on Lemmy?
@wildeaboutoskar@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks for asking OP, I had no idea either.

I know on Tumblr it means 'if you laugh you have to reblog', but judging from the posts on here I didn't think it was the same

SirEDCaLot, in Why does Lemmy feel so fresh compared to Reddit?

This is absolutely true, and this is how the internet was back in the old days before Big tech and megaplatforms. People would set up little servers on their cable modems using spare laptops. It was experimental, it was imperfect, but it was ours. One side effect of this, was that you had to be at least a little bit smart to get yourself connected to it. Even if that just meant knowing that connecting to it was something that you wanted to do. That weeded out a lot of idiots who contribute low quality discussion. Also, because there is no giant company with a financial incentive to get everybody to use it as much as possible, things were built for raw functionality rather than trying to make them easy for people to get addicted to in 30 seconds. That naturally makes them more usable for anybody with an IQ over 90.

Also, no advertisements. No sponsored posts.

neanderthal,

Also, no advertisements.

It didn't take long for ads to come along. Remember the 90s banners where you would punch the monkey to win $20? Or the text links that were ads? Pop ups?

SirEDCaLot,

Okay that's fair- I'm sure some instances will choose to advertise in some way.

TBH I'm more concerned about spam. Reddit has an army of anti-spam stuff, and that's just one site. As Lemmy grows, it will become a spam target, which will be more challenging due to its open nature (IE spammers will spin up their own instances eventually). I suspect that much like e-mail, some kind of RBL list will emerge.

breakerfall, in I need to survive for 3 days without pooping, and eating as little as possible. I can pee, but not very often. It can't take up too much space. What food do I pack?

This is amazing.

haelusnovak, in How would you explain to a new user how Lemmy works?
@haelusnovak@lemmy.world avatar

Instead of visiting the Mall of America and shopping at only what the mall will offer, using outdated infrastructure-- you can instead visit a variety of towns ("instances") which each host their own cute boutiques ("communities") specializing in a particular sort of item (whatever the topic of the community is). The instances can have their own rules that apply to its communities, but communities can also make their own rules, like a shop can. Skip the crowds and barely functional Supermall experience and find a better place to engage in discussion and get information.

Grant_M, in Hypothetically speaking, if Reddit back tracks on their API plan and meets all of the communities expeditions- would you go back to Reddit?
@Grant_M@lemmy.ca avatar

Lemmy will continue to improve and Reddit will flush itself further down the toilet.

zkikiz, in Do you want to moderate asklemmy?

I’m happy to help, I’ve been a reddit and FB mod for years and am doing my best to be active here.

RickRussell_CA, in I need to survive for 3 days without pooping, and eating as little as possible. I can pee, but not very often. It can't take up too much space. What food do I pack?
@RickRussell_CA@lemmy.world avatar

It's about preparation. Approximate gut motility for a healthy adult on a light diet is about 48-60 hours. So, stop eating 3 days before you leave, poop out all you possibly can before your 3 day period starts. Drink about 500ml water per day in the days leading up to the 3 day period. It wouldn't hurt to prep with a mild laxative to remove as much gut content as possible.

Once the timer starts, start eating small amounts only after the first day. For water, about 500ml per day. The good news is that what you pee out can't take much more space than the fresh water you drink.

This assumes you are relatively sedentary. If you perform manual labor during the 3 day period, you'll need to increase water intake, and possibly food intake, to avoid exhaustion.
