son_named_bort, in What goes good with American Cheese?

If you do get American cheese, get some from the deli, it’s much better than Kraft.

makuus,

Even better: If the deli has Cooper Cheese, get that.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

It fascinates me that you guys would have this stuff in a deli!

It's also not called "American cheese" in my country (NZ).

It's called "processed cheese" and strongly associated with children's lunches, so most of it is packaged to appeal to children.

lazylion_ca,

Processed cheese is not cheese. It’s rubber that won’t hold air. It’s cheese product. The only acceptable use for processed cheese slices is throwing at your little brother. I wouldn’t even feed those to a dog.

Hazzia,

I like the not-so-subtle implication that your little brother is lesser to a dog.

Dinodicchellathicc,

All cheese is valid. Even swiss

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

It's kind of almost like a confectionary.

BeMoreCareful,

This comment makes me want to huck imported cheese at you.

I’ve never met a cheese I didn’t like.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I didn't say I don't like it! It's just not a deli food here.

I have met a cheese I didn't like, once. It was rubbery and tasted like soap. Unfortunately I had a kilo of it to get through.

Hazzia,

You know, I had Mozzerella that tasted strongly of soap before. I looked it up and apparently some chesses can start to do that after some variable amount of time due to some sort of chemical process. It would be worth checking if that cheese was supposed to taste like soap, or if it was going through the same issue I experienced.

If you’re wondering, yes I still ate it, like hell am I going to waste mozz that I paid for

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

That's so interesting; I didn't know about that!

It definitely wasn't supposed to taste like soap, it was a standard 1kg block of cheddar, which is pretty much a staple food.

I still ate it too. Hey, we're both still alive.

TheRealKuni,

Kraft’s Deli-style is pretty good, too (comes in a pre-sliced block, like what restaurants use for burgers). Just don’t get the Kraft singles, which aren’t nearly as good in flavor or consistency.

dvdnet90, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?
@dvdnet90@lemmy.world avatar

Yes with modified Apollo and Boost. But, nowadays, many of my Reddit subs seems get a lot of double post, scam ads. if this problem overwhelms my home feed. I will ditch Reddit

hamster, in Have you ever had Detroit-style pizza?

Learn to make it yourself! It's not that bad. You can probably use premade pizza dough from the store or a local pizza shop.

ReCursing, in Have you ever had Detroit-style pizza?

What defines Detroit style?

snooggums,
@snooggums@kbin.social avatar

Dough cooked with motor oil.

ReCursing,
@ReCursing@kbin.social avatar

Sounds a bit greasy

EyesEyesBaby,

As per the first hit on Google:

Detroit-style pizza is a rectangular pan pizza with a thick, crisp, chewy crust. It is traditionally topped to the edges with Wisconsin brick cheese, which caramelizes against the high-sided heavyweight rectangular pan.

ReCursing,
@ReCursing@kbin.social avatar

Thanks. As a brit I've never seen that in the wild, but might have seen a picture on the Internet I guess

jimmy_shoe, in Have you ever had Detroit-style pizza?

Never had it until recently. We tried it from a place called Pi-Squared Pizza in Hendersonville, NC. It was great, and we’d like to try it from other places now.

Voiden, in Have you ever had Detroit-style pizza?

Shout-out from Rochester, NY! There’s a restaurant called Pizza Wizard here with some seriously delicious Detroit deep dish

christian, in Have you ever had Detroit-style pizza?
@christian@lemmy.ml avatar

A good quality Detroit-style, like from Buddy’s or from Frank’s in Wyandotte a little Southwest of Detroit, those are my favorite pizzas. If I’m getting something cheaper like Jet’s though I actually prefer the round.

8565,

Frank's is my favorite lol

christian,
@christian@lemmy.ml avatar

Borderline whether it should count as pizza but the prosciutto pie is crazy good.

s6original, in What goes good with American Cheese?

Classic grilled cheese.

There are a lot of ways to cut cheese. Just sayin.

Wickedlucky214, in Are you replacing Reddit with Lenny?

Absolutely. Deleted account.

notmyredditusername, in What is the most unhelpful advice you have received?

“sleep when the baby sleeps”

Yeah because there’s absolutely nothing that needs to be done once I finally get my daughter down. No washing and sterilising, for prep for us or for her, general chores around the house which you can never do effectively one handed. And fuck me if I wanted to try and relax and have an actual evening after they’re down too.

“Sleeping like a baby” had also never seemed like such a juxtaposition!

axolittl,

I feel like the phrase “sleeping like a baby” was not created by someone who was a primary caretaker for a baby.

notmyredditusername,

Exactly, unless they actually meant it to mean “for no more than 30 minutes then wake up crying inconsolably because I’ve shit myself.”

Then they hit the nail on the head and people have just misconstrued it!

DinosaurSr,

Here’s some more unhelpful advice: Hang in there, it gets easier! (for real though)

funnyletter,

Also, like, adult humans don’t do so good if they only get to sleep for an hour or two at a time. I don’t have kids but I have a puppy and my mental health improved 10x when he stopped waking up every night because he needed to pee. Just going from two 4-hour blocks of sleep to one 8-hour block.

Then he hit puppy adolescence and had a massive sleep regression and I was getting an hour or two of sleep at a time between SCREAMING PUPPY INTERLUDES and promptly lost my fucking mind. I gave up on crating him because I needed the sleep.

Until Jon Stewart’s rant about Chicago Style deep dish, I had always thought I had Chicago style. But it’s actually Detroit style that I’ve had.

Personally, I prefer New York style, tho.

XbSuper,

I’m not sure what style the pizza I like is called, it’s just pizza. But I know I detest Chicago deep dish, and new york style. One is more of a casserole than a pizza, and the other is like paper with toppings on it.

Kolanaki,
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

But it’s delicious paper. 🥹

You probably like what I’ve heard called Napoli style. That’s a normal crust that’s not super thin but also not super thick. It is supposedly the traditional style. But this is from American places so IDFK 🤷🏻‍♂️

XbSuper,

Sounds right, but I know about as much as you (maybe less)

The_Jit, in In which game did you spend the most hours?

And here I was thinking my 360+ hours in BoTW was excessive…

Lolors17,

I forgot about The Nintendo Switch. I have like 700 Hours in BoTW. I don’t know how you can see the playtime on the WIIU but since the release of BoTW I played on the WIIU about every day I got the Time to do so.

thesushicat,

Same here! I think I had over 400 hours on botw. Now onto totk, and loving every minute. After reading this thread I just told my husband he should be thankful I’m not into WoW.

Underrated comment right here

SanndyTheManndy, in What's your real-life superpower?

I can hear the most minute of sounds. Even my kitten walking around downstairs (on a marble floor).

On the other hand, I hear way too much noise and have great trouble understanding speech because of it.

Just last week, it allowed me to hear the spinning of wheels stuck in mud a couple of klicks from my house, while I was eating dinner. Apparently someone got stuck in one of the muddy holes caused by the rains, in the middle of nowhere. Dropped him off at his place, and got the car freed the next day.

apolinariomabussy,
@apolinariomabussy@lemmy.calvss.com avatar

I kind of have the same thing! We have hearing tests at my place of work and the tests show I have above-average hearing, and it does translate outside the tests as well. It’s really nice to be able to hear the intricacies of music for instance.

Unfortunately, it doesn’t translate to speech, and I often struggle to comprehend what people are saying, and it gets even worse when it’s in something that’s not my native language… It’s like I can hear the sounds people are making, inflection and all, but I can’t quite form what the entire thought is.

SanndyTheManndy,

Exactly! Unless I know what language they are speaking in advance, it takes a few seconds of listening for the words to appear out of the noise. Honestly, pretty damn annoying when you’re on a call. I have to record all of them to be safe.
