07Chess, in do you have multiple lemmy accounts in different instances. why?

I had one in .world until it got buggy and then I moved to sh.itjust.works and don’t plan to move again unless something similar happens. I hadn’t sunk much into the other account anyway so it was no big deal

david, in what band/song are you kinda ashamed you listening to as a kid?

I can’t answer that! The shame is too strong! I still have a guilty listen every so often on YouTube though.

scrubbles, in In which game did you spend the most hours?

Satisfactory. I’m well past 1,500 hours.

The factory must grow

@4am@lemmy.world avatar

Bad enough they stole Factorio’s concept but now we’re stealing the fanbase’s catchphrase too? 😜 /s

Mikurei,

Both games are awesome!

zuluwalker,

Stopped at around 100 hours with Update 7, might have to wait for 1.0 to fully get back in again

dQw4w9WgXcQ,

Has 1.0 been announced to be close?

zuluwalker,

I’m guessing before the end of 2023, considering the speed of their updates.

Plenty of time to mess around with other games!

elkaki,

The factory building genre is way to addictive, I only have like 200 hours as of now in satisfactory, but I must say Spaghetti bases on satisfactory are a work of art

AlexWIWA,

The genre is crack for anyone in any kind of STEM job. Gets even worse if you’ve got ADHD too

Got a couple niche subs I still check once in a while. Otherwise I don’t read reddit anymore nor do I comment and vote.

07Chess, in In which game did you spend the most hours?

This is a low ball but I easily have 3000+ hours in FFXIV and Old School Runescape (not combined)

tkohldesac,
@tkohldesac@lemmy.world avatar

FFXIV for sure is up there. Probably my most hours in a single game. The first several Monster Hunter games are so similar that I kinda want to count all their hours together. If I did that then the MH franchise MAY surpass XIV. Either one is a hell of an experience and I don’t regret any of it.

Vlyn,
@Vlyn@lemmy.ml avatar

Sheesh. I heard FFXIV is really good later in the game. But you first have to get over a 60 hour bump or something?

I did try it out and barely lasted a few hours. So many boring cutscenes, so much running from NPC to NPC. And barely any combat, the quests were like “Run 3 minutes over there, kill 3 enemies, then run 3 minutes back to the NPC”. It was tough :-/

Afatmess,

It does start really slow but once you get to the end of A Realm Reborn and the beginning of the first expansion it really takes off.

Vlyn,
@Vlyn@lemmy.ml avatar

end of A Realm Reborn

Google says that’s roughly 120 hours, oof.

I’ve been playing video games for the last 27 years or so. If a game isn’t starting to be fun in the first few hours it’s usually not worth sticking with it. For example anyone saying “The game starts at max level!” totally missed the point in my opinion, if everything before that is shit, why have it at all?

Btw. if you do slog it through ARR, what happens if you make a new character to play a different class? Do you have to go through it again?

Afatmess,

I’m usually not into games that “start at max level” either, but to me, going through the boring parts of ARR was worth it to get to the amazing expansions. I wouldn’t even say ARR is bad. It’s pretty standard MMO content for the most part. It’s just that the expansions are so good that ARR looks bad by comparison.

As for leveling classes, you’re free to switch classes pretty much whenever you want. No need to make another character to play another class. You mainly just play lower level content to level other classes but it goes much faster since you don’t have to replay the story.

Mewtrino,

The good news is that you don’t have to make a new character to play different classes or jobs—you can play every job on one character, so if you don’t have any intentions of starting an alt, you only have to put up with that ARR slog once.

Imo, the worst part of ARR is a particular quest you have to do about halfway through. It just kills the momentum of the storyline. But it does pick up a lot by the end. If you ever do decide to give the game a try, you can play up to lv60 for free (with some limitations), which covers the base game and first expansion (Heavensward).

I’d highly recommend ignoring all side quests and focusing on the main story to get ARR out of the way ASAP. After that, the game really opens up and Heavensward improves dramatically in terms of pacing. But yeah, I totally hear you about not wanting to stick around with a game that starts off slow. I literally quit FFXIV for years because of ARR until I got the whim to get back into it last year lol.

Riven,

It’s not that ARR is bad, just that Heavensward was such a jump in the quality of both writing and voice acting that it makes ARR look bad in hindsight. And the slog was actually the post-ARR section (ie patch content). It was awful. Largely cleaned up now though. Still long.

If you ever do play, the biggest mistake you can make is to rush to endgame. You’ll burn out. Take it slow, read the dialog, watch the cutscenes, and you’ll have a much better time. It is Final Fantasy after all.

You don’t need to make an alt to play a different class. The game encourages multiclassing and there is an ingame server transfer system so need to make one for other servers either. But yeah if you do make an alt you need to go through it all again.

07Chess,

They’ve been working on redoing and slimming down some of the base game to cut some of the fat. You’re not wrong about the structure. The story itself especially in the expansions 3/4 of them could stand on proud amongst the best of final fantasy stories. MMOs aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, though, I get it.

Haven’t commented on a single post since I wiped my account. I check the news and world news subreddits and then move on.

jmp242, in Be honest, do you still use reddit?

Hmm, not really. As I’ve said before - a lot of the news stuff is also on Ground News, WaPo, Mastodon or Lemmy. There’s no great replacement for /r/sysadmin, but that needed replacing as it got to be useless over the last few years. I don’t know if there’s a /c/changemyview or not, but that isn’t necessary.

Actually, I just spend more time doing other stuff for entertainment - read more books, catch up on more podcasts, yes watch more youtube, TV, Movies whatever. Go outside, walk the dog. I’m kind of surprised how much time I can spend on lemmy lol.

cwagner, in How are we going to pay for all this?

Everyone? At once and next week? It would just die.

Kbin.social had a nice post (check their meta community for it; it’s technically a different software, but still), how the instance went from costing $2-3 a month to 1000. And that’s a tiny fraction of reddit.

Development needs to advance just to better handle current user counts, there’s a lot of things that simply never were an issue when only a few hundred users were active.

The way it will work, is probably donations, maybe some very few paid instances.

jbcarroll,

@cwagner @psylancer Also the fediverse in general having easier ways to self-host at home or on a VPS, which helps distribute costs/storage/bandwidth.

cwagner,

Storage doesn’t distribute, though. Every instance needs to save everything. I run my own instance, so the way it works, is that I save everything anyone posts in any community I subscribed to. Permanently, by default.

Bandwidth, sure, mostly. But storage will only grow. And massive amounts of instances will also add issues over time, unlike something like XMPP/Jabber, the fediverse is more of a hubs and spokes model.

gkd, in do you have multiple lemmy accounts in different instances. why?
@gkd@lemmy.ml avatar

I have a separate account now for meme communities. I enjoy memes, but gotta be a way to filter them out better without blocking the communities.

Yea you can filter by subscribed but then you also miss new content or communities you don’t know about yet.

ModernRisk, in do you have multiple lemmy accounts in different instances. why?
@ModernRisk@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Just this one. Don’t need more and don’t need a second account for NSFW, as I’m trying to avoid it.

outbound, in What are some ways Lemmy could be destabilized?

Ummm… Reddit is not a “cash cow” - quite the opposite, Reddit bleeds money. But, overall that’s not impacting your question one way or the other.

Both of your points are way over-the-top and unnecessary to discredit Lemmy. They certainly don’t have to even touch Lemmy itself, they simply have to leverage their own platform and their own userbase to circulate negative views of Lemmy and keep people coming to Reddit. They also don’t have to pay news agencies - users seeking trusted media is no longer a thing in a world of social media; some clickbait articles on crap websites are all that’s needed and those will be distributed (and redistributed) for free if they’re jucy enough to attract readers.

Some attack avenues which come to mind:

  • Maxist-Lenonist roots of Lemmy itself, along with digging up the backgrounds of various admins around the world and posting wild accusations of their moral character
  • Lack of moderation and circulation of far right-wing and left-wing theories
  • The structure/reliability of federation. Volunteers running servers which talk to each other, you sign up with one server and who knows if it’ll stick around; and if it does disappear suddenly, then you have to join a different instance and start all over again.
  • Conspiracy theories on how/why Lemmy instances are funded. Secret funding from Chinese/Russian governments looking to subvert “the west” through social media? Collecting “dontations” to run Lemmy and diverting the money in support of terrorism?
  • Small userbase and relatively small amount of content compared to the vastness of Reddit
  • Lack of centralized contact for legal issues - from takedown notices for copyrighted content to privacy to right-to-be-forgotten legislation. And, sooner or later, there will be revenge porn and sigh child porn popping up. Federation is going to multiply the issue as posts are propogated and many dozens/hundreds of admins will have to be contacted to take action.
  • Your entire post history is open to all - whether it be for training AI, to someone looking to scam you, to governments of the world keeping a close eye on you.

But, to be honest, Reddit doesn’t have to do any of that to maintain their position at the top of the heap. All they really have to do is look internally and stabilize Reddit. Remove Spez and replace him with someone who can build a vision and knows how to communicate. Spend money on their own app to make it usable and accessibilty-friendly. Spend money on a marketing head (and team) who can create a workable/profitable advertising program. Probably, they’ll have to shrink down Reddit’s scope and remove the NSFW subreddits, figure out a way to deliver ads to all users, and adjust costs for “premium”/ad-free experience and API access to roughly equate with with revenue they would have received serving ads. If Reddit puts a new CEO in place and announces the vision for the future withing six months and implement the changes within another six months, they’ll likely keep 85% of their existing userbase.

Caboose20, in [SERIOUS] How do you do figure out what job you want after high school?

I always liked the idea of going to a college that had a program with a work term so you can see if you like it and also get some experience. I would say talk to some people in areas that you are interested in and see if you find any jobs you may look doing.

Alter_Id, in The new Reddits
@Alter_Id@kbin.social avatar

My impression of squabbles after a while was more "feigned whimsy reddit". The people who loved the quirky snu aspect of reddit found their way there. "Oh look, he's wearing a box on his head with a face hole cut out! Ha ha!" - "He's holding a plate with a piece of birthday cake in one hand and a saxophone in the other! What a whacky character!!!" - "He's piloting a rocket ship! Space is amAAAAAzing!!!"

The dev seemed like he was impressively dedicated to improving the platform, but I didn't jive with what I perceived at the time to be the emerging culture there. Nothing offensive about it, but that's not at all what I'm looking for really. I haven't been there any type of regularly for a couple weeks, so not sure if that's still a thing.

Also, I don't pay strict attention to what instances they're coming from, but I've blocked many communities throughout the fediverse that spam memes like they're running out of time or something. I don't think squabbles exclusively lays claim to that type of behavior.

Just my opinion.
