Anissem, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?
@Anissem@lemmy.ml avatar

“He has no friends” - Dad

LostCause, in What is some good things to do with a new pc/laptop/computer?

If it‘s Windows, I usually do something similar to this: https://www.zdnet.com/article/how-to-remove-bloatware-from-windows-10/

Also in addition to the good Firefox + uBlock already mentioned, first things I install would be Windows Power Toys, Greenshot for screenshots and Obsidian for writing and note taking that‘s most of what comes to mind.

zitronen, in from a user perspective do you prefer material design 3, GNOME style guidelines or any other style guidelines?

Personally, I am very happy with GNOME’s design decisions. Most beautiful UI out there!

This might be more of a setup thing, but one of the first websites you visit should be ninite.com in order to download browsers, media players, cloud storage, .zip file decompressors, etc, all in one go.

hsl, in Does Lemmy support in App Gifs?
@hsl@wayfarershaven.eu avatar

This is a better question for a support community; please check the sidebar for suggestions.

solstice, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

My iphone is almost 7 years old and still runs great. No problems with the battery, speed is just fine, everything is fine. I paid about $1,000 for it and I’m determined to squeeze every last penny of life out of it. No plans to change until it breaks or becomes unusable somehow.

LostXOR, in How much "data" do you personally have?

About 3-4TB, most of it on a RAID storage array. Though I'm making a lot of YouTube videos now and I don't want to delete any of the footage so it's growing quickly.

Aurix, in Is there an efficient way to search for lemmy instances based on their rules?

Would be very helpful to have that for Mastodon as well. Kind of like a survey which the admins can fill out. I for example have a big problem with the Fediverse’s general strong aversion against sexually explicit content. Voluntary NSFW photos of yourself are also an important part of free self expression and know a bunch personally who do that on other sites.

Just kicking it into the “but this isn’t pornhub” bucket is plain wrong.

roon,
@roon@lemmy.ml avatar

Isn’t there a lemmynsfw instance for that though?

kuroyousei,
@kuroyousei@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yes but even there it has a bunch of rules about which nsfw you can or can’t post. What I want is “as long as it’s not illegal. It’s allowed”

breadsmasher,
@breadsmasher@lemmy.world avatar

nsfw / pornographic content brings up a huge can of possible legal issues, however. So I can understand why instances would be adverse to hosting it

Aurix,

I understand, but Twitter, reddit and old Tumblr was much more open towards that in general.

breadsmasher,
@breadsmasher@lemmy.world avatar

And why do you think they aren’t any more?

Countries are requiring much stricter rules on it

kuroyousei,
@kuroyousei@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yea I mean that’s the whole thing right? Why does there need to be a “no porn” rule when we have Communities? Why can’t communities make their own rules about whether or not they want to allow nsfw? Sometimes I want news about movies or games or current events. Sometimes I want tiddies. I’d like to at least have the option of having all of those things in one place.

basskitten,

The whole point of federation is that you don’t have to pick just one place. You can add communities from nsfw instances, communities from nerd tv instances, communities from your geographic locality, etc…

kuroyousei,
@kuroyousei@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yea, if you can find them in the first place…

fubo, in Is there an efficient way to search for lemmy instances based on their rules?

Wrong community; you want one of the Lemmy support forums listed in the sidebar.

solstice, in given how little one vote matter, it seems to me that stripping felons of their right to vote is both petty and counterproductive if the point was to reform them into civic minded individuals ?

Not just voting but having that blot on the record FOREVER puts a scarlet letter on their forehead. Good luck getting a good job and having a future when you’ve been in prison a few years for a nonviolent drug crime that should’ve been solved with a few weeks/months of inpatient rehab. Our entire criminal justice system in the US just breeds more crime and generational cyclical poverty. Hooray.

TheGreenGolem, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

Confidence is everything.

Lauchs, in Which learning path makes the most amount of sense?

I didn’t know about the Odin Project, looks super interesting so thanks!

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

You’re welcome! I am going to work on it slowly but surely. It’s going to be up to me to elevate myself out of my own miserable circumstances. The key to life improvement, I have always maintained, is lifelong education. Yeah, I ain’t no spring chicken compared to the kids coming out with degrees but I can probably hang with them with some effort.

cybercitizen4,

Great attitude.

8565, in How much "data" do you personally have?

I've got close to 80TB between 3 locations.

AceFuzzLord, in What's a good way to prank your coworker?

I am not sure this works anymore or if it ever did since I heard about it years ago, but when you send an email to someone on something like gmail who doesn’t use some form of adblocker, be sure to put some hidden text in whatever color the background of their client is. Apparently they’ll eventually start seeing ads for that specific thing you hid in the email since those emails are most certainly scanned so you can get targeted ads (especially gmail and most likely outlook as well).

peter,
@peter@feddit.uk avatar

You probably need to receive more than one email about a subject before you start getting targeted ads

AceFuzzLord,

Forgot to mention the part about it being something you need to constantly do. Thanks for the heads up.

kuroyousei, in Which one are you?
@kuroyousei@sh.itjust.works avatar

Where is Bojangles? They git the best fries there are.
