“The only thing to abuse is moderation” - A song quoting Sénèque, but I never found the original sentence from Sénèque (apparently he was talking about Sex in it but I think it applies to anything in life)
“It will not be we who reach Alpha Centauri, and the other nearby stars. It will be a species very like us – but with more of our strengths and fewer of our weaknesses.”— Carl Sagan
This one has been my go to for years and years.
It gives me comfort. In that we probably won’t every get there, because of our evolutionary failures as a species, but that’s ok. Because the next species or evolution of our kind will stand a better chance.
Kind of reminds me of the quote usually attributed to Einstein - I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones.
In yours we’re evolving to be better and smarter. In mine we didn’t learn anything from War Games.
I think this is a terribly disheartening quote. It’s very true. But it’s sad that there’s basically zero hope for us as a people to come together to do great things that benefit our species and the others trapped on this planet with us. We’re doomed to a future of selfishness and violence
Well there is a chance we might get our collective shit together after a world wide set back in tech, medical, any other scienctific advances. If we have a massively destructive climate event, solar flare, or any other big global hit, then many years later after the survivors reconnect humanity. We MIGHT have a better mindset and work together more. I doubt it though, but I’m a pessimist.
I had a psychotic break. Of course, I did not know I had developed a mental illness. I thought the Russian mafia was coming to kill me and my family. That made for a very crazy year before I finally got treatment.
Did something trigger the psychotic break? Did you previously have interest in the Russian mafia that led to you believing it was that specific organization coming after you? I’m glad you were able to get help and treatment!
The shrink said it was triggered by stress at work. I was also on ADHD medication which can contribute but they didn’t think it was the cause or anything.
No, no interest in the Russian mafia but the guy who lived in the apartment below me where I first heard the voices was named Wlad so that’s where my mind went I guess.
My grandfather used to tell me: “What I know is that I know nothing”. He used to tell me that even in his old age, he was still amazed by the things he discovered, just like a child. That taught me to always be humble and to understand the point of view of others and to always learn in life. So I will always remember this quote.
I don’t know why, but I notice this phrase often. I know it’s kind of arbitrary enough to be a coincidence to run into a lot, but for some reason it just got stuck in my head when I was young and it almost seems like it’s haunting me.
I feel like I’m going to hear these words before I die.
Ignore this “you’re asking in the wrong place” response.
Others have been experiencing this too. It appears to have no real affect on your subscription status. I have a few like that as well. They still behave as if they are successfully subscribed.
Pfft. This dude. It’s like this guy’s where you google something to find the answer, arrive at a prospective link and “omg why are you asking, go Google it”.
Do you realize that you’re advising OP to ignore a mod (in a reply to said mod) of this community who is being perfectly chill while informing OP about the published rule 3, which the community mods have stated they’re being relaxed about while so many new Lemmings are joining, but not giving up on forever?
Rule 3 is quoted below, and helpfully directs people to active communities that are dedicated to support:
Not regarding using or support for Lemmy: context, find help in the list of support alternatives below
I mean, the mods are being chill about it so far. If they start dropping bans, the users trying to turn this into a support community won’t actually be users anymore and they can go create asklemmyaboutsupportbutalsootherstuffwhatever and mod it themselves. In this respect, lemmy communities differ from language evolution.
For my part, I’m here for a discussion sub. I participate heavily in lemmy support communities, but that’s not why I joined here.
We get that, but just saying “go somewhere else to ask this” and not actually providing an answer at the same time comes off as pompous and OP isn’t likely to delete their post just to post it again elsewhere.
Mod here. The fun thing is that I actually did remove this post three hours ago when I posted that comment. Due to federation issues, people are still able to comment on it.
These are the rules for this community. If you’d prefer another, you may want to check out !asklemmy.
Not if they use Pixel Binning, which Google, Apple, and Samsung all do, and I’m sure others do too. This results in my Pixel’s 48 megapixel camera generating 12 Megapixel photos, which reduces the file size.
It’s not just visual, posts from these communities don’t show up in the subscribed feed. At least that’s the way it is for me. Sometimes clicking the button again twice helps, but not always. Though at least that adds the communities to the list of subscribed communities.
Edit: Hm, just checked again, and I was wrong. Seems like they are showing up in the subscribed feed. Maybe I got that impression from some other issues my instance had before updating.
This one is from my previous boss: “you gotta do what’s good for you, and nobody else”
Taught me to prioritize things that are important to me and not to live for the sake of others
Another was “you can’t help people who don’t want to help themselves”
Taught me that some efforts are futile because unwillingness from others will result in deterioration to the status quo unless they’re willing to participate to move things forward
Not my whole life but ever since I learned it twenty years ago in the army. “Slow is smooth, smooth is fast”. It’s a saying that means to learn things carefully, slowly, and methodically. When you are learning like this speed will follow as a natural progression. So if you learn something slowly and smoothly it will translate into being quick and doing it correctly. I have applied this to all sorts of different things in life and it has never failed me.
Logged in just to upvote this one, because I’m at a new job and something I struggle with is feeling like I ask too many questions. This was good motivation for me, thanks for sharing.
