•Lemmy.ml - Signed up here first, was recommended to it as a general place to sign up to

•Lemmy.blahaj.zone - Egg memes, blåhaj memes, just memes

•Lemmy.world - Handy for extra world news communities

•Lemmynsfw.com - Do I need to explain. This is under a different name, but I’ve kinda used that name over on the other place and I’m slowly bringing my content over (plus new stuff)

I only use one and four regularly

solstice, in Do you guys think this is the start of something bigger?

It’ll come and go like all the rest. AOL, AIM, IRC, message boards, myspace, livejournal, digg, fark, slashdot, reddit, lemmy…???

CoachDom, in Easier-to-Pronounce Variants of the Name Vitalii
@CoachDom@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Maybe go for shorter version: Vito

People tend to misspel my name with c instead of k at the end so to make things easier for everyone I go by Dom

Vitaly,
@Vitaly@feddit.uk avatar

It was the first ChatGPT suggestion, I like this option, maybe I will choose it

And what is your full name?

federalreverse, in Easier-to-Pronounce Variants of the Name Vitalii
@federalreverse@feddit.de avatar

I would definitely suggest losing the second i at the end, that looks weird. Or maybe go for "Vitaly" (which you can tell people spells like V + Italy).

(Incidentally, a couple years back, I had email contact with someone named "Vitalis", which I thought sounded like a female and vaguely flower-y name. Only when we finally met in person did I notice he was male. Somehow he didn't seem too irritated by me having misgendered him in multiple emails though.)

I am cautiously hopeful that fedi will become significant in a while.

mim, in What made you pick the Lemmy server you are on?

Decided to go with a smaller instance from the start, as I think we can all see what happens when one entity holds too much power within an ecosystem.

Also wanted to go with one that was not defederated from other instances (nor defederating others as well). Checked a bunch of lists, and decided to go with my current one.

lvxferre, in Easier-to-Pronounce Variants of the Name Vitalii

Perhaps the Italian spelling of the same name, Vitale? I expect anglos to be a bit more used to it than to Slavic names, specially since romanisation adds another layer of complexity. This should stop them from butchering the first vowel, at least.

Keep in mind that no matter the spelling, English speakers are prone to reduce some unstressed vowels until they’re unrecognisable, or to “stress” them randomly; it’s a restriction of the language itself, not the spelling. I kind of predict that they’ll do it with the last vowel of your name no matter the spelling.

Another approach would be to find some similar-sounding local name that you like, I know a few Armenian speakers who did this here in the Southern Cone - for the same reasons as yours, people got a hard time pronouncing their names.

Any way, there’s no “single” answer for that, but I hope that you find one that works for you.

Vitaly,

No, I don’t want people to think I’m Italian, but i love Italian language and culture. And i don’t want to change my name completely, maybe i will go with Vito or V+Italy

Thank you for the reply

frap129, in What made you pick the Lemmy server you are on?

I joined Lemmy a few weeks ago when a lot of other reddit refugees were making the switch. A lot of the servers were overloaded, so I just went ahead and hosted my own. My instance is never overloaded because I’m the only user, and because Lemmy is federated I can subscribe to communities on any instance I want.

lemmy, in What made you pick the Lemmy server you are on?

.... Because I own it

I decided I felt better selfhosting it rather than being on anyone else's instance

shreddy_scientist, in Now that Lemmy is growing an important question needs to be answered: what should we use as our equivalent for "the narwhal bacons at midnight?"

“The counterculture can’t count.”

cypherpunks, in censored?
@cypherpunks@lemmy.ml avatar

The Lemmy software is intended to be somewhat censorship resistant, but that does not mean that lemmy.ml is a “free speech platform”.

Like most instances, lemmy.ml has rules (they’re in the sidebar on the front page) and we regularly delete posts and comments which violate them.

That instance you’re talking about is intended to be a “free speech platform”, which in modern internet parlance is a synonym for “nazi bar”. One of the two admins of that instance says explicitly: “racism, bigotry, sexism is allowed".

Most Lemmy users aren’t into racism, bigotry, sexism, and the other things people there are into, so, most Lemmy instances have defederated them.

I hope this answers your question!

angrynomad,

So essentially it’s highly censored to defederate them. Not only you can’t view them using a different instance and post, but registering there, you can only interact with their instance. Lemmy needs a better method. I was thinking about this the other day, why is something as simple as blocking content on the users end or blocking x type of content not an option, even on registration. Even if there’s hate speech mixed in, freedom of speech should exist, but freedom to not hear it, should also exist. Essentially shadow banning, but done by choice of those who don’t want to hear said content.

Racism, bigotry, and sexism, exist in everyone. Maybe there’s just better ways to express it, or not to. But it’s cultural, people want to be with their culture, their people. When you force people to ‘accept’ everyone, they lose their Identity.

I really don’t think Lemmy will survive as everyone will be afraid of getting cancelled and defederated.

lordcommander, in What made you pick the Lemmy server you are on?

Lemmy.world because lemmy.ML recommended it when I tried to sign up there. I’m considering moving to a smaller server though since this one seems to be getting overloaded.

Tankyiu, in I need to survive for 3 days without pooping, and eating as little as possible. I can pee, but not very often. It can't take up too much space. What food do I pack?

What a time to be alive!

I don’t want to jinx anything but really hope this platform will continue to grow. love the atmosphere right now!

arditty, in Do you guys think this is the start of something bigger?

Lemmy reminds me a lot of the way the internet used to be- smaller, independent communities with more real engagement and less of a content firehose. With so many instances, if you want something, you have to seek it out or start it yourself- with the added benefit of federation keeping everyone connected.

I’m really optimistic that this will get critical mass. I think the concept of federation is great, and I like to think we’re at the forefront of a whole new phase of online community.

normalmighty,

It’s giving me strong ~2013 reddit vibes, which I always thought was around the peak of the site to be honest.

I think the community system starts to break down once the platform gets too big. As reddit grew, all of the big r/all subs lost any sort of identity and became the same amorphous community copy/pasted over and over.

The downside is that we don’t have as much niche content yet, but we’ll see how it’s looking in a year or so.

yads,

Plus everything is just a bit broken and requires some figuring out. I’m definitely pretty tech savvy, but I’m having a hard time imagining non tech savvy people figuring out how to sign up and access these communities, at least not in the current state of things.

whitewalker_646,

The hardest thing about lemmy was signing up and figuring out how to access it and log my account into mlem but things are mostly smooth after that sure there are some bugs but i feel like i am learning quickly

The only big disadvantage i see in lemmy other than the sign up process is the lack of a dedicated video player but it’s understandable because they cost too much to maintain and run
