Joshie, in Other than blue bubbles, why do you use iPhone?

OS updates. It’s frustrating to buy a top of the line android phone just for it to be forgotten by the manufacturer in 6-8 months.

Pixels give you 5 years now same as iphone.

AlexWIWA,

My iPad from 2015 is still getting all the updates. It’s wild.

This right here. Lifelong Android user that switched to the iPhone 14 and never looked back.

Edit: iPhone 13, not 14, my bad.

floofloof,

My problem with Apple is that everything’s designed to interoperate with other Apple stuff, and nothing else. It feels like a walled garden that doesn’t just keep users in, but also keeps those of us out who might want to try a single Apple device without spending many thousands replacing our entire ecosystem.

JackbyDev,

Literally causing people to get bullied into getting an iphone over stupid chat bubble colors.

Micromot,

Which gets even stupider when you realize apple is being stubborn and that is causing the issue

GeneralBoop,

Absolutely, Apple is being resistant to RCS not because they think iMessage is superior but because they know it weakens their lock in power. I know I’m stating the obvious, but it just annoys me so much.

Lawyerator, in People of Lemmy, have you ever had what some would consider a "spiritual" experience?

I was in college, it was night, and several friends and acquaintances of mine had lugged a case of beer to a giant empty wire spool that sat next to our campus at the time. The spool on it’s side made for a good table.

Having completed an entire class about world religions, we were set to debate whether Buddhism or Taoism was a more reasonable philosophy.

The girl to my right was definitely engaged in the conversation, but she hadn’t said anything yet. I asked her “so what do you think about all of this?” She looked at me, crossed her arms, and fell backwards into the ground. I immediately said, “holy shit, did you guys just see that?” Nobody else saw the girl. As it happened, the wire spool was on the lawn between the campus and a graveyard.

Maybe I’m nuts or maybe I saw that. Never saw anything like that again though.

luthis,

How did that affect you?

Lawyerator,

At the time, I approached it from the perspective that consciousness in some capacity was possible after death while acknowledging that I had no evidence on the questions of how, why, how frequently, for what duration, etc. I hypothesized that ghosts were whorls of consciousness like the whirlpools in water after the passing of an oar.

I was raised Lutheran, but had been approaching my understanding of existence from what I thought of as a logical perspective. For example, I reasoned that heaven, if it existed as a joyful reward state, must either be essentially finite in duration or must involve eternal dementia based on the notion that eventually you would run out of novel or interesting thoughts or experiences. To remain joyful, heaven would have to either have the individual be dissolved back into the universe/almighty or would require forgetting earlier novel experiences.

These days I tend to just anthropomorphize the universe itself, as the wants of an omniscient and omnipotent being would be indistinguishable from the natural rules of the universe. To quote Roger Waters: “what God wants, God gets (God help us all)”. I figure God wants matter to be attracted to other matter and for electromagnetism to be a thing (amongst other rules of the universe).

ndguardian, in People of Lemmy, have you ever had what some would consider a "spiritual" experience?

Kind of? I was in college walking on campus in broad daylight. I pass under this skywalk, with nobody in my general vicinity. As I do, I feel what feels like someone was walking past me coming from the opposite, locking their arm into mine. I got pulled back enough to stumble.

Sure enough, nobody nearby, no objects right near me or anything I could have accidentally gotten caught up on. Still have no idea what happened there. And for the record, this was before I ever had tried alcohol and I don’t really do drugs, so I can’t blame those.

luthis,

How did that affect you?

ndguardian,

It was weird, but I haven’t really made heads or tales of it. Hadn’t really encountered anything like that before and haven’t since, but it was just bizarre.

luthis,

I mean, right then, at the second after it happened

ndguardian,

Oh lol. Well I was certainly confused. Had to do a double take to make sure I wasn’t just so zoned out I walked into something, and after I confirmed I didn’t I just had no idea what to think. It was truly unexplainable, at least for me.

Google doesn’t have vision or taste in my opinion. They released a million messaging apps and STILL haven’t made a decent one. Its been how many years and they still use SMS on most androids and people have to rely on whatsapp, a Fcaebook app… now they’re releasing their new “standard” RCS which has competing versions some with end to end encryption by default and some without.

They STILL don’t have a FaceTime alternative unless you use whatsapp…

Google knows how to show ads and everything else has so little passion and vision i dont trust any of their services because they love to kill their products

teawrecks,

I understand the “taste” argument, but personally the goal of not having a corporation man-in-the-middle everything I do takes priority. I degoogle my phone to the best of my ability.

Unfortunately, good vision and design takes funding, and there’s not a lot of money to be made from not taking advantage of users.

DarkDarkHouse,
@DarkDarkHouse@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Apple’s hardware sales are about 70% of revenue, whereas Google’s are more like 10%. That’s a lot of funding that doesn’t have to come from user data.

teawrecks,

Harvesting user data is a symptom, mitm and taking advantage of users is the root of the problem.

Saying they don’t profit much from your data is like saying, “they only kick you in the nuts a little bit.”

Bjoern_Tantau,

My counterpoint is that you have to use WhatsApp (I rather use Signal) because iMessage is Apple only. SMS and RCS are stupid. With Signal you can reach users of all devices. Having a messaging protocol that depends on the device used is stupid. And hopefully the EU can end the vendor lock in with messaging apps as well.

I don’t even use any Apple products, but I still gotta agree with all this.

How they didn’t do an iMessage style client better than Apple given the fact Hangouts was right there and superior in every way for so long is just… bleh.

Google is losing it. Android is losing more nerd functionality and just copying iOS… but poorly. YouTube Music was better as Google Play Music. “Chats” was better as Hangouts. Where Google Fi at? Where Google Fibre gone? How’s Google+ going?

Even their search results are mostly spam now.

Reddit became too America focused. Most of the posts were about America or assumed everyone reading was American. It felt very exclusionary.

Letstakealook,

I saw this complaint on reddit a lot, but at the end of the day, it was a US based site. Of course there will be mostly Americans and they will default to that understanding.

Also, the US is a large country. It’s not like Europe where you’re a day trip away from 5 other countries. Most Americans can’t afford travel outside the US, so they only have exposure to the many cultures within the US.

The hate Americans get for not catering discussion on a US based site to the global community is really what’s strange.

theceoofanarchism,
@theceoofanarchism@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

This comment itself is ironically filled with American exceptionalism mythology.

APassenger,

I’m curious, which part is a myth? I only see facts and not all of them paint America as great.

These things exist elsewhere, besides. Just not always in “the West.”

theceoofanarchism,
@theceoofanarchism@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Americans size doesn’t excuse their ignorance and a lot of other countries don’t believe they are the only country the way americans do.

APassenger,

Which Americans are you talking to? We know there are other countries and cultures. We just aren’t responsible for learning deeply about all of them. No one is.

You’re using some strong, broad strokes that aren’t reflective of my experience at all.

theceoofanarchism,
@theceoofanarchism@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

You should learn about experiences outside your own that you are not is not a good thing.

APassenger,

I am learning those things… hell, I’m studying a completely different language and learning the history.

I think I’m not who you think I am.

Letstakealook,

Let me simplify this. Would you go to a forum with an address in .ar and complain that the discussion doesn’t pertain to you? You wouldn’t, but you are just blindly hateful of Americans for whatever reason.

theceoofanarchism,
@theceoofanarchism@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Fine if you want your websites to be an american echo chamber you do you. Thats what you want not me and thats not what sites you probably claim to be american advertise themselves as either.

APassenger,

America is far from a monolith. Our states roughly equate to different European countries with vastly different cultures, foods, rights and laws.

We just speak dialects that are almost all the same and roll up under one political entity. It is not so dissimilar than the EU, otherwise.

We are, in many practical terms a forced confederation with a shared Constitution. There are those, like in the EU, who want out.

Edit: the shared single language is one of our under-recognized super-powers. I can travel this huge land mass and communicate viably everywhere. It is key to our cultural impact. It is accidental, but helpful to us. Except when we have people who dislike our impact and become hostile.

theceoofanarchism,
@theceoofanarchism@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Except that’s not true states are no where near similar to countries. Hell a lot of european countries are arguably more diverse internally by far than america examples include the spanish regions, french regions, italian regions and so many others. To argue the US is like the EU is to completely ignore the independence of EU counties and how each of those organizations work to a delusional level. The US throughout its country is very culturally similar with most differences on racial and economic basis.

In the last year I started noticing on Reddit people typing the ‘letter’-word and half the time I wouldn’t know what word they are referring to.

On a couple occasions I would reply asking what word they meant and they would reply that I should know, with my comment downvoted.

That reminds me of another thing I was sick of seeing, people asking a question and getting told to google it or that lmgtfy link. You would later see people in the comments mentioning that Google took them there when Googling for it.

jsonborne, in Other than blue bubbles, why do you use iPhone?

I use an iPhone 12 because:

  • longevity. Between software updates and an over powered phone cpu I know it will last. Android phones in general barely get security updates.
  • Simplicity. I used to root and install ROMs on my android phone. I used to jailbreak iPhones. I’m done with that now. I do enough technical work at work I don’t want to have to mess with my phone.
  • Security. Ties into updates somewhat, but how often do you hear about iOS malware? It is usually big news when you do.
Atemu,
@Atemu@lemmy.ml avatar

Not sure why this is downvoted so much. These are very valid points.

teawrecks,

Well the claim that Android doesn’t receive security updates is plainly false.

Atemu,
@Atemu@lemmy.ml avatar

I don’t see how that point is relevant as that claim was never made.

The claim was that Android phones usually barely get updates which maps to my experience. Updates more than one or two years after the release of a device is the exception, not the norm.

Micromot,

Which is also not true, most android deviced i have used got updates every 3-5 months with some small security patches between them.

Atemu,
@Atemu@lemmy.ml avatar

For the first year or two, that’s common. Getting feature updates for anything even approaching >5 years is near unthinkable for Android devices however. You only get that with custom ROMs and even there it’s only half of the story as they can’t provide security updates for vendor blobs which is kind of a big yikes.

The iPhone 8 will get cut off the newest feature updates in the upcoming iOS 17; 6 years after launch. Security updates will likely be available for years to come. For comparison, my OnePlus 5 from 2017 (1 year younger) received its last update (any update whatsoever) in 2020 (3 years ago).

With an Android device, you’d be lucky to get security patches in any regularity at all, much less >3 years after release. That only happens with a couple few vendors who actually care such as Nokia and maybe Google (to a degree).

Micromot,

For my custom rom i get vendor updates and theres about 1 update per month, open source devs are really

Atemu,
@Atemu@lemmy.ml avatar

The vendor blobs in custom ROMs come from the stock vendor ROM. When the vendor stops publishing their stock ROM, the custom ROM’s will also stop coming. In some cases some BLOBs can be taken from similar devices that might be supported a bit longer but I believe this is quite rare.

The ROM itself still gets updates through the AOSP but vendor BLOBs stay where they are and open source devs can do little to nothing about that.

Micromot,

Couldn’t find anything about that online, could you please give me the source of that information?

Atemu,
@Atemu@lemmy.ml avatar

I homebrew the ROM on my personal phone and I can tell you from first hand experience that you need the vendor dirs extracted from the OEM ROM. You can read up on that on the wiki pages for building any device ROM.

You can also come to that conclusion the other way around: How else would you (or LOS maintainers) get your hands on proprietary blobs full of secret sauce that vendors sometimes even try to actively block access to?

Elasto Mania (Elma). Awesome dirt bike game.

planforrain, in What video game have you played the most, that you think is garbage and no one else should ever play?

What I am seeing here is that mostly people regret playing free to play games. That tells me that their business model is working as intended but we should all wise up.

My regret is spending too much time making cool mods work together and then not playing the games, oblivion was the worst because I didn’t get it until skyrim was a year or two old and there were so many stupid mods out already. Most of them are janky or old and have incompatibilities with each other. I discovered pretty quickly that I need less options not more in open world rpgs because I’m an adult and don’t have time to play games the way my heart wants to (look in every door, under every bush, around every corner).

weew,

Free to Play games are basically a test of willpower. They use every trick in the book to get people to keep playing and spend money. FOMO via time limited events, gambling addiction via loot boxes/gacha, impatience via playtime or realtime limited resources, sunk cost via slow and difficult to earn resources/rewards. All of which can be “solved” with money.

On the other hand if you’ve got the willpower to just… ignore FOMO, ignore the gambling, and just walk away when you’ve played a little bit each day, F2P games actually offer incredible amounts of content. Over the past decade I’ve played about 5 different F2P games and never spent a single cent. Each one was pretty fun, and I just walked away when I got bored.
