Bach’s Chaconne from his violin partita in D minor.

It’s a song that was written around the time when Bach’s wife died, and if you listen hard enough, you can almost hear that it’s about her. It sounds like there are two voices, a low voice and high voice, who meet and fall in love with each other, and experience all the highs and lows of life and then are torn away from each other by death in the end. And it’s all done with just notes on a violin. And what’s more, it was written 300 years ago! It trips me out thinking about how somebody can write something so epic for a single instrument so long ago.

Jacsha Heifetz’s version of it is my favorite. Some people don’t like how fast he plays it, but he does the ending the best, in my opinion. You can hear the pain and denial and chaos of the two voices trying to enjoy their last moments together and leave nothing unsaid between each other most clearly the way Heifetz plays it.

Itzhak Perlman’s version is very good too. He plays at a slower pace than Heifetz, and has a more epic sounding tone. The highs and lows are generally more epic sounding the Heifetz, but I don’t quite understand how Perlman plays the ending. I have no doubt that he’s trying to tell the same story as Heifetz, but there isn’t any of that pain and chaos like Heifetz has. I’ve seen interviews with Perlman, and he seems like a very happy and well adjusted guy, so maybe that explains why his ending is so different. Maybe that’s just how the ending is for happy people like that, and I can’t comprehend it.

There are other good renditions to check out too, but Heifetz and Perlman are my favorites. Hillary Hahn and Nathan Milstein are other popular ones. Plus a bunch of others. That’s another cool thing about Chaconne. Everybody has their own rendition.

Lakes,

I listened to both. I see what you’re saying about Jacsha Heifetz’s version, it almost cuts through you. Emotions like pain and grief don’t hit slowly in the times of death. Great links, thank you.

yarn,

Glad you liked it! Yeah, I love Perlman’s rendtion, but Heifetz’s just takes the cake for me. The ending is too real.

Disco Elysium for sure.

8565, in Is anyone else disappointed that Lemmy is becoming the new Reddit?

Sounds like your subscribed to some toxic communities. I dont have that problem at all

Games: Outer Wilds and World of Warcraft.

The former because it’s an experience unlike anything else I’ve ever had in gaming, and the story and meaning stays with you for years afterwards (possibly forever, but it’s too soon to tell.

The latter because the very idea of being able to really explore Azeroth after years of playing the Warcraft games was the most exciting thing ever, and the moment I first exited the orc starting area and looked at the map and saw how big the world was will never leave me.

Books: The Hobbit. Read it when I was 4, with a not insignificant amount of help from my dad. It was fun, it was thrilling, it was scary, and it kicked off a lifelong love of reading. For an adult it’s a very short read that will probably only take a couple days, which is also a big plus.

Honorary mention to Thud! by Terry Pratchett. Really the Discworld series as a whole, but that one particular book is the absolute perfect blend of comedy, social commentary and downright horror. Again, very much stays with you afterwards.

YSK, you can edit titles here.

buckykat, in Are we doing anything to prevent becoming Voat?

Voat was by and for the weird racists from the start.

corsicanguppy,

I think it was a good plan-b for about a week; but yeah, it went to absolute shite in such record time.

averagedrunk,

Was it? I don’t ask that to be a jackass. I remember being on there briefly before the racist and jailbait bans on Reddit and it didn’t come across as terribly racist to me at the beginning. But it sure as hell got really racist, creepy, and fat-hatey really damn quick.

There’s a possibility I just missed it. I’m pretty oblivious unless something is right in my face.

Adramis,

IIRC, Voat either was created in response to or got popular after the banning of /r/fatpeoplehate and some other shitty subs.

buckykat,

Voat was founded to be free speech maximalist relative to Reddit. Basically the only subreddits Reddit ever banned that weren’t bigots or pedophiles were r/shoplifting because corpos don’t like being stolen from and r/chapotraphouse to present an appearance of impartiality when banning r/thedonald.

When someone online bemoans a lack of free speech, you have to ask, “free speech to say what?” in much the same tone as you might ask, “states’ rights to do what?”

Belgdore,

To the best of my memory, it started out as a less moderated more free speech space. But that kind of place online tends to attract racists, bigots, and haters because most places online are very free except for those kinds of speech.

Knossos, in Are you replacing Reddit with Lenny?

The moment that boost stopped working I moved to Lemmy.

thesqueakywheel,

The creator of boost is making a Lemmy app. I’m very excited to see it. I loved boost

MajesticSloth,
@MajesticSloth@lemmy.world avatar

This all made me realize while I had a reddit account for awhile, I never truly was on it much at all until I discovered Boost. Then it became a daily part of my life. Looking forward to the new Boost while I check out the other apps.

Rowan, in Are you replacing Reddit with Lenny?

Yeah, literally un-installed RIF the moment I heard about reddit bs. RIF was reddit to me, so I’m done with that now. Pretty much the only time I open that site now is when I Google “whatever whatever reddit” to find actually useful answers.

rageagainstmachines,

In addition to uninstalling the client (RIF), you should poison your Reddit posts, and then delete your account.

creed10,

unfortunately you can’t automate it anymore, right? I have waaaaay too many comments there to do it manually

rageagainstmachines,

Power Delete Suite still works AFAIK: github.com/j0be/PowerDeleteSuite

retrieval4558, in What's your opinion on all the Reddit alternatives?

I’m all in on Lemmy. Haven’t tried many others.

Xartle, in Liftoff. Lemmy app. Do you like the way it works now?

It’s my favorite of the options so far, I wish I wouldn’t default to lemmy.world, but that may be pilot error…

TwinTurbo,

There are a few default instances in the settings page, and you can add your own as well.

photonic_sorcerer,
@photonic_sorcerer@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Yeah, I think you can change the default page in settings.

sloonark,

You can remove the lemmy.world instance once you’ve added your own. Long press.

hitagi, in What's your opinion on all the Reddit alternatives?

Here’s my opinion on a few I’ve tried:

  • Kbin: I liked the UI but I thought calling communities “magazines” was weird. Also, there were features that I felt unnecessary like “boost” or “microblog”. Self-hosting documentation was much worse compared to Lemmy.
  • Squabbles: It took me a while to figure out the UI and honestly did not like it. The icon looks very funny as if it’s mocking what the average user is supposed to look like. It also isn’t decentralized.
  • Tildes: I liked the UI and the name. Not much to say other than that it’s also not decentralized.
  • Discuit: The best UI out of the bunch. It’s very easy to navigate. I wish it also had a naming community prefix like “!” or “m/” or “s/” or “~”. Generally, it feels very Reddit-like but it’s also not decentralized.
  • Lemmy: Very rough start but this and Kbin were really the only real options for me because they’re both decentralized. It’s gotten a lot better over the past month in terms of performance and UI. There’s a lot of apps being developed for it too. Most of Lemmy’s annoying quirks are its bugs but those are being fixed after every new release.
EarlTurlet,
@EarlTurlet@lemmy.zip avatar

Tildes is a non-starter because I’m not cool enough to know anyone to provide an invite.

Karlos_Cantana,
@Karlos_Cantana@sopuli.xyz avatar

Just email the dev and ask. That’s what I did.

Artaca,

Same. I firmly think if Tildes had opened up more, it would have risen fast as a viable reddit alternative. That ship has likely sailed, but it’s aiight cus it’s still got great communities.

BanjosKazoo,

They didn’t have any interest in becoming a Reddit alternative, at least not for the vast majority of Reddit content like memes and puppy pictures. I think the entire place is text only, which does tend to foster more thoughtful commentary.

Galaxyboy_3598, in Liftoff. Lemmy app. Do you like the way it works now?

Truthfully, it was my least favorite of all of the Lemmy apps. I didn’t like it’s user interface. Was it recently updated?

Shortbus,
@Shortbus@lemmy.world avatar

I tried liftoff a few hours ago and same. Didn’t mind jerboa, but connect just clicked with me… I think because the flow is extremely similar to boost.

I couldn’t shake the same feeling I get when using discord when using liftoff. Just no.

To each their own. That’s why there are options.

MajesticSloth,
@MajesticSloth@lemmy.world avatar

Which one do you prefer?

Galaxyboy_3598,

I dabbled with Jerboa, Thunder, Liftoff, Connect, and wefwef.

I like Jerboa the most.

RampageDon,

Jerboa and Connect have been my two favorite

ahto,

Same. It looks and feels like “my first flutter app”. I switched to Thunder, which is also made with flutter, but is much more pleasant to use.

MiddleWeigh, in What's the worst thing you've ever smelled?
@MiddleWeigh@lemmy.world avatar

Human feces/raw sewage in a stagnant, humid, concrete structure with poor circulation and no means of escape.

Also my dad has this little puss hole on his back that you can perpetually squeeze the most foul smelling stuff out of. It was a family event to squeeze in wonder.

BustlingChungus,

It was a family event to squeeze in wonder

Yup, coulda done without reading that.

RGB3x3,

Yeah, I should have stayed out of this thread.

PizzasDontWearCapes, in Liftoff. Lemmy app. Do you like the way it works now?

I switched to Liftoff from Jerboa.

There are a few features that either don’t exist or I haven’t found (jump to next comments thread), but it’s worked really well overall.

For context, I use Relay when I’m on Reddit

AnActOfCreation,
@AnActOfCreation@programming.dev avatar

Check out Thunder! It’s my favorite Lemmy app so far coming from Relay. Similar to Jerboa but a lot smoother in my experience.

t0m5k1, in Are you replacing Reddit with Lenny?
@t0m5k1@lemmy.world avatar

For the most part I have, there are a few subs that i’d like to see here but Lemmy is still kinda new so it’ll take time.

I’ve also dropped twitter for mastodon but same issue there too.

I really like the federation feature like the ability to respond to Lemmy via mastodon.

PersnickityPenguin,

Wait, what is this feature? Are they linked somehow?

t0m5k1,
@t0m5k1@lemmy.world avatar

Go to whichever comment/post on a lemmy instance you’re trying to comment on and copy the link in that little colorful icon below/above the comment/post (that’s the fediverse icon and the fediverse-wide interoperable link).

Then just paste that into your search field on your mastodon instance, and the rest is self-explanatory from there.
