I often have patients who are uncontrolled diabetics. Their feet essentially rot off of their body if it gets bad enough (diabetes destroys blood circulation, and the feet usually get it first because they have the least blood flow), and the smell is something that text cannot describe. They are also essentially always infected, so leaking pus adds to the multisensory experience.

jayknight, in Probably should assume everything will be leaked, anyone using Tor/VPN for Fediverse apps?

Are there any onion service lemmy instances yet?

Yeah2206,

Also, isn’t onion service pretty much used to hide the server’s IP, but doesn’t do much about hiding anything for the end users?

LedgeDrop,

The end user’s ip is hidden in the onion network. The server will get the ip address of the “last node” your client routed it’s request through (and that node only has the ip address of the previous node, etc).

However, the clients ip can be leaked if a server creates some Javascript which makes an Ajax call (basically, an additional http request). A malicious Ajax call will not go through the onion network and thus expose the clients real ip. Hence, it’s recommended to disable Javascript and other features while using tor.

jayknight,

If you have all your traffic going through tor, ajax requests will come from an exit node too.

LedgeDrop,

I did a bit more homework and you’re right.

“Back in the day” running Javascript increased your attack area. But now-a-days I guess it’s consider “safe”.

I did find this old (7 years ago) posting which talked about concerns. Today, I guess the rule of thumb is to avoid (or limit) browser plugins.

Thank you clarify that.

MagnusRobotFighter, in What's the worst thing you've ever smelled?

Paper mills like in Ticonderoga, NY or Rumford, ME.

AcornCarnage,
@AcornCarnage@lemmy.world avatar

Unexpected Rumford.

Szymon, in What's the worst thing you've ever smelled?

A fridge unplugged for 3 weeks with food inside that I had to clean out. I haven’t smelled a rotting corpse but I imagine that it can’t be far off.

TugOfWarCrimes, in People who have discovered their dream job through a video game, which was it?

Not me personally but related. American Truck Simulator has started displaying in-game billboards for an irl truck driving recruiter.

I’m usually pretty strongly against in game advertisements, but this one just kind of makes sense to me.

DestroyerOfWorlds, in What's the worst thing you've ever smelled?
@DestroyerOfWorlds@lemmy.world avatar

I worked a clean up crew for a large college campus. One day the boss offered a case of beer and a full day payed off to the person who would clean the bottom of the elevator shaft in the exchange student dorm. The whole summer they had been dumping their garbage down it instead of bagging it and bringing it to the dumpsters. Muck boots, painters suit, and full hood ppe did very little to the smell that followed me for days.

I was not worth a case of beer and a day off.

edit! that was second worst! I accidentally inhaled a full hit of silicon fumes from a friends bong he’d just repaired. that was terrifyingly awful. I thought I was going to fucking die on the spot.

Nemo, in What's the worst thing you've ever smelled?

Childbirth. It’s been three times now, and it’s so bad. Worse that Boy Scout summercamp latrines. Worse than when a dog farts after eating people food. Worse than a septic tank. Worse than opening a fridge left unplugged and full of food for a month.

I’ve smelled all these horrible things and more, and childbirth is the worst.

mysoulishome,
@mysoulishome@lemmy.world avatar

Um…what part? I’ve been with my wife for one natural birth and one c section and recall no smell

Hypnosis4162,

Same here. I smelled nothing.

DonatellaHibachi, in Are you replacing Reddit with Lenny?

I wish I didn’t have to, but I have to because without Relay there’s no Reddit for me.

Y’all lemmy people seem nice, so I plan on staying! :)

ocassionallyaduck,

Same. Relay was the one for me. So far Connect for Lemmy has been the closest I’ve found. No button nto clear read yet, but the mark read on scroll and collapsing comments function is here. So it’s in good shape to start.

DonatellaHibachi,

I’ve been on liftoff for a bit now, and I seem to gravitate towards it more than any of my other attempts to connect to the fediverse, I have to admit!

I would have done a monthly sub thing if I knew the money would’ve gone to u/dbrady, but I refuse to have one cent of my money go to Reddit.inc.

kyub, in Are you replacing Reddit with Lenny?

Already did. Purged all my Reddit bookmarks and account.

Generally: You have to be the change you want to see in the world. If you want to change others, change yourself first. I don’t think the mindset “I need to reach that big number of people over there so I’ll just be over there as well to teach them” works, or leads to the goal you want. Even though it seems reasonable at first glance. This mindset just leads to you giving the other people AND yourself more reason to never leave from there. Which is contrary to what you want. If you want others to switch to better alternatives, move yourself first, help grow the alternatives, and they will sooner or later also become interested in joining. Things like the latest Reddit and Twitter fiascos also show that no huge proprietary social media platform rules forever. The time to change to better alternatives has never been better than now.

what,

It took me way too long in life to realize you can’t change other people. There is a famous Persian poet (Rumi) who stated “when I was younger I wanted to change the world. Now I want to change myself.” Really it’s made me a lot happier as well. No more stressing over why people don’t believe me or spending hours in pointless arguments. Just focus on what I know is needs improvement in my life.

I should have left reddit a long time ago and I even tried a few times, but the lack of an alternative to keep me connected (it was my only social media) always had me coming back. So I’m proud to say I’m at least a week without any reddit whatsoever, not even peaking in my rearview mirror at this point.

schnapsidee, in If you could witness any historical event firsthand, which one would you choose and why?

The crucifixion and “rebirth” of Jesus. I’m not religious, but I’d be curious what actually happened.

It’s probably one of the most influential events in modern human history and while the truth of it is probably very boring, I’d still like to know.

redballooon,

Question was about historical events…

schnapsidee,

It is a historical event. Jesus was a real person, and there are a lot of sources - outside the bible - about him as a person and his crucifixion.

That’s my entire point. I’d like to know the truth behind the religion. I find it absolutely fascinating how historical events get warped over time to become a religion that billions of people still believe in today.

novibe,

Sadly there are not a lot of extra-biblical sources on Jesus and his life actually.

There is one, a single one. And it’s pretty bad. Josephus. He basically mentions “James, the brother of Jesus they call Christ”, in the middle of a text not about Jesus at all.

And that’s it.

schnapsidee,

I’m not a historian, but Tacitus definitely mentioned Jesus’ crucifixion. Saying there are a “a lot” of source is an exaggeration, you’re right about that, but there’s basically no doubt that Jesus was a real, historical figure. (I’m not saying that you’re disputing that, I’m just still stuck on the guy actually thinking that Jesus wasn’t real.)

Obviously Christian sources can’t be taken at face value, but there’s enough corroborating evidence - be it archaeological or written - that proves that at least some of the things in the gospels are based on facts, even if it’s certainly embellished and a lot of it likely just made up and/or warped over time.

Delascas, in Are you replacing Reddit with Lenny?

Trying to. This is a FANTASTIC tool to find new “subreddits” on Lemmy: sub.rehab

clutchmatic,

I still do not know how to access them through Jerboa

psilocybin,

Do you run the latest update?

It has a “communities” entry in the sidebar that let’s you search and subscribe communities.

Dozzi92,
@Dozzi92@lemmy.world avatar

I wish there was even a browse future. Sometimes the mind can’t think of what it wants is called.

Not sure why I’m telling you, but thanks for listening.

psilocybin,

Sure thing

What do you mean by “browse” feature?

There is a way to see a feed of all Lemmy activity.

In jerboa you can see it after you click on on the burger menu in the top right corner of the screen and select “All”.

Dozzi92,
@Dozzi92@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, more browse just subs, versus posts on individual subs. Like, just a list of subs.

And I am 90% Jerboa at this point, so if it’s on the browser version, disregard everything, because I’m here now and I’ll probably stumble upon it.

ribboo, in Do you struggle to keep your house tidy?

My robot vacuum really helped with this. It runs every day while at work, which forces me to pick stuff up and make sure it won’t get stuck somewhere.

Got me into the habit and by now it’s second nature. Before I leave the house I do a quick check/clean, which takes a minute or two at most.

And then you have the obvious benefits in getting the apartment vacuumed.

azvasKvklenko, in Do you struggle to keep your house tidy?

I don’t have kids and never will, I live alone in avarage european flat, yet I still struggle to keep it at least managable. I like having it clean, I just hate cleaning

meiti, in Do you struggle to keep your house tidy?

You just need to master one rule: designate a place for each item and put them IMMEDIATELY back in their designated place after use.

TeaHands, in Isn’t it a bit of an annoying having repeat communities across various Lemmy instances?
@TeaHands@lemmy.world avatar

Honestly, I can see why some people find it annoying but in my experience so far it’s been fine. Do a sweep on lemmyverse, sub to all the communities around a given topic, never really think about which one it actually came from when I see a post in my feed.

There are some quite niche topics that have been unnecessarily split, essentially just because people want to be in charge rather than joining forces, but that’s people for you and railing about it isn’t gonna get us anywhere. From an end-user pov, subscribing to multiple has been fine.
