LachlanUnchained, in What should individual communities on Lemmy be called?

Commies 💛

Atemu,
@Atemu@lemmy.ml avatar

Commies full of Leminists!

AceFuzzLord, in What communities ("subreddits") would you like to see?

So far a couple of big ones (askreddit) and an unnamed one I used to occasionally go on using teddit on my PC browser are here, but I'm hoping that garfieldminusgarfield and imsorryjohn migrate if they already haven't.

original_reader,

To add to that, I would wish for “calvinandhobbes”. 😊

Thormjolnir, in Why doesn't DuckDuckGo return any results for "PeerTube"?

Might be a duckduckgo bug, but have you tried another search engine to see if it works there?

QuestionMark,

Yes, I tried with SearX, and it worked.

goat, in Why doesn't DuckDuckGo return any results for "PeerTube"?

Appears for me.

Is Peertube banned iny our country? maybe you're typing in a URL?

UprisingVoltage,

Works for me too

Also remember that DDG is basically a private frontend to bing, just as much as Startpage is a frontend to google.

If bing has any problem with peertube in OP's country, DDG will have too

Rayspekt,

It is? Aw maan, I thought ddg is something independend. Now I might have to look for another search engine again.

parrot,

so is it actually recommended to use ddg or not, I thought they were the privacy flag bearer

UprisingVoltage,

Well, it's complicated and it really depends on you in the end. I'll try to explain.

DDG has good results in any language and they donate a lot of money to privacy-related initiatives. That's great and very few do this, BUT they also depend massively on bing: if bing censors something, you won't be able too see it in DDG. There have been a couple other controversies but they are pretty minor imo and almost every privacy-oriented company has those.

Brave search is great and has the best independent index among all private search engines, but it's 100% reliable only for English results and people usually either love or hate brave for its involvement in crypto and a couple of other minor controversies (people love to pick hills to die on)

Then there are meta-engines, who give you the best private results across the board (duh, they look for them on every search engine) but they don't really contribute to the scene like ddg (or even brave) does.

So yeah. DDG is not a bad choice by any means but everything has caveat. It's up to you to stay informed about the software you use to make a conscious choice

Edit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9q3qPxrTqg this is a good overview

QuestionMark,

Can confirm this. I tried with bing. Same result. That was why it wasn’t working, because of bing. Thanks! I’ll probably to switch to something else now. https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/571b6c5a-5db7-409c-b284-a814ac615972.jpeg

QuestionMark,

I just tried it with a VPN and it worked. Turning it off and refreshing the resulted in no results again.

But I can open https://joinpeertube.org/ without a VPN. This confuses me.

goat,

See if bing does the same. DuckDuckGo mobile kinda sucks

QuestionMark,

It does! https://lemmy.ml/pictrs/image/571b6c5a-5db7-409c-b284-a814ac615972.jpeg So it’s probably because DDG uses bing.

Dirk,
@Dirk@lemmy.ml avatar

DuckDuckGo clearly censors results based on IP.

webghost0101,

Duck has always felt like a shittier more cencored version of bing to me. I have no idea how people stand it.

Lockely, in Server rules - am I missing something?
@Lockely@pawb.social avatar

It's not the rules on those servers, but the rules on the server you belong to, i.e lemmy.world. Looking at their main site, their rule 3 is as follows:

https://pawb.social/pictrs/image/08e7d76c-459e-4e77-8adb-cf5726d91a21.png

CocktailPlasma,

Wow. Honestly this makes me seriously contemplate my move to Lemmy. I thought lemmy.world was at least a free speech endorsing server. So now we have the two biggest Lemmy instances out there that are clearly against free speech. Lemmy.ml is moderated by pro CCP mods that remove anything anti-china, and lemmy.world can't even tolerate a sub about conspiracy theories (which we should all know have a tendency of coming true the past few years) and is therefore already starting with stifling free speech.

Yeah, go start your own instance... Not everyone wants to run their own instance just to be able to browse communities on other instances that your current instance doesn't agree with.

Yeah... This is really putting a sour taste in my mouth about Lemmy already.

SeaGoatGirl,

Try Truth Social or Gab. Both (I believe) are on the Fediverse and you'll get all the QA conspiracy you could want.

Nomecks,

You won't be missed.

Rob,

The “start your own instance” is twofold. You can indeed move away if you don’t like the rules one instance imposes. But at the same time, being an admin, you get the freedom not to associate with stuff you find problematic. You can’t expect an instance owner to pay for server space to host others’ whims.

From a more personal point of view, I’m really happy that I don’t have to engage with QAnon BS while browsing. It works well for the users too.

CocktailPlasma,

You do realize that conspiracy is far more than qanon stuff, right? It was an interesting sub to read from time to time on Reddit.

And yeah, I get "just run your own instance", but not everyone wants to deal with their own instance just to be able to freely browse communities without random censorship. I was hoping Lemmy wouldn't be that way. Don't know what it is about some people being so unable to tolerate opposing views from their own...

Lauchs,

Note the "similarly disproven" section.

If there are fun, interesting, not comically disproven conspiracy theories/communities, I imagine they'd be welcome.

Don't know what it is about some people being so unable to tolerate opposing views from their own...

No one should have to host your stupid nonsense. Just because I have a party, doesn't mean I have to invite you.

We want good conspiracies, not the dangerously stupid stuff. Hence, no Q nonsense.

ki77erb, in What is the weirdest thing that your family does together?

When I first met my wife's family, they had a tradition of playing cards (Canasta) anytime the family would gather. My wife however didn't know how to play. They taught me and it was actually really fun hanging out and bullshitting. Like guys playing poker. We still do it all the time after nearly 20 years of being married.

CmdrShepard,

My sister did this with her ex-inlaws except it was Pinochle which they taught to me as a teenager when I was there on an extended visit. It was also pretty damned fun.

KittenBiscuits,

I wish my in laws were game players. My grandmother used to get us all to play Rook together. It's like Gin Rummy but acceptable for Southern Baptists to yell out! ... it was a dry county...

bleph, in Server rules - am I missing something?

The mods of lemmy.ml are doing a lot of freewheeling moderation: https://lemmy.pineapplemachine.com/post/5781

CocktailPlasma,

So... from what I'm getting from that post... everyone likes to talk shit about reddit having a big ownership from a Chinese company that is exerting Chinese censorship on reddit... and now we're (well, I'm registered at lemmy.world, but subscribe to a lot of communities on .ml) sitting here on an alternate site that... is ALSO exerting Chinese censorship! 😂

bleph,

But it's Fedi so it's grassroots CCP censorship! See, better!

Dick_Justice, in Server rules - am I missing something?
@Dick_Justice@lemmy.world avatar

What does rule #3 say?

PriorProject,

Lemmy.world (where OP's account is) has a rule 3 stating:

No posts or comments supporting or promoting QAnon related content or similarly disproven conspiracy theories. Moderators have sole discretion to decide if a post violates this rule. Birds are real. The Earth is round. Get over it.

See https://mastodon.world/about (both world servers are maintained by the same admin team, and lemmy.world links to that page for its rules).

PlutoniumAcid, in How should I be using Lemmy?
@PlutoniumAcid@lemmy.world avatar

Now what might really cook your noodle is the info that the developers of the Lemmy software are pro-Russian genocide deniers, and there's a growing sentiment to not support that by dropping Lemmy in favor of kbin or something else.

Here's the best sourced info I found on the genocide topic: https://kbin.social/m/lemmyworld@lemmy.world/t/47012/-/comment/196579

Just as I was starting to get the hang of this, it feels like I stepped into another wasp nest.

Ookay, then let's look at kbin, right? Well, there's literally only ONE developer and the current version still very much a (good) beta version. So, not kbin either, then?

What's left? Beehaw, who act like snowflakes and have disconnected from where growth and interesting stuff is happening?

I feel pretty lost in the sea of the fediverse right now. Go back to Reddit? Naw, not right either.

Golfindriel,

This is the first time I hear about the Lenny developers being pro-Russian. Do you have any source where we can look into it?

Willie,

Well, you can always put one foot on each side. Make an account on both, use both a bit.

kbin has a better interface, in my opinion though, I'm cheering for them!

slybird,

Mostly just wanted to make my first comment

I haven't signed up for Lemmy. Between the Lemmy and Kbin I like this Kbin a heck of lot more and decided to sign up here.

I haven't abandoned Reddit and I have no plans on doing so. I'll probably be on both platforms if this one takes off or until Reddit becomes something like a Myspace. For now I'm just exploring here.

buda, in What things sound like an awful combination but are surprisingly good together?

French fries and mayo

makingStuffForFun,
@makingStuffForFun@lemmy.ml avatar

That is… completely normal. Chilli aoli is actually the good one.

buda,

In the US, it’s not very common unfortunately. That sounds delicious!

xargs, in Hypothetically speaking, if Reddit back tracks on their API plan and meets all of the communities expeditions- would you go back to Reddit?
@xargs@lemmy.world avatar

This is the most degen reason to give, but the likelihood is I would go back. Lemmy is solid though there's a couple of things that make me wonder if it's worth fully commiting.

a) Userbase. If reddit went back, subreddits would likely reopen, change their rules back to how they were before, and therefore the numbers would follow.

b) Centralised. I know this one will piss people off, but the fragmentation of lemmy is a bit too much. I have the option to put all my trust into a single account on one instance and subscribe fedarated if instances support it, or I can create 20 different accounts across different instances.

c) Retention of userstats. While I've not got rediculous amounts of karma like some people do, I have a a little bit, and rebuilding that is a bit ass.

damniel,

I agree with most of what you're saying, except for karma. Who gives a fuck

TechnoBabble,

Isn't karma just like an anti-spam mechanism that barely works?

And you get karma just by posting whatever the community wants to hear. So it's not like it shows how enlightened you are or anything.

Anyway, one thing that bothered me about Reddit's karma system, is that people would delete their comments if they got a few downvotes, even if they had something important to say.

Here on Lemmy, you can quickly see both upvotes and downvotes. So if someone says something controversial due to politics or whatever, they're less likely to delete their comment because they can see "ahh, I'm not just being mercilessly attacked, 50 people upvoted me."

That can be abused I guess, but I like that it promotes discussion that isn't just echo-chamber nonsense. We'll just have to see how it works in practice.

ShoePaste, in What things sound like an awful combination but are surprisingly good together?
@ShoePaste@lemmy.ml avatar

A pickle back! Pickle juice chaser with a shot of Jameson. i thought a pickle back was the most disgusting sounding thing until i tried it. it’s a fantastic chaser for a shot of whiskey.

SonofSonSpock,

I ordered one once and the waiter didn’t know what I was talking about so I just got a beer. He comes back later with a big smile on his face holding a glass with some liquid in it saying he brought me a pickleback. It was premixed. I shot it, it was a lot of liquid, and only once it was in my mouth did I realize they had used bread and butter pickle juice.

ShoePaste,
@ShoePaste@lemmy.ml avatar
