southrydge, in What is the craziest thing that's ever happened in your life?
@southrydge@lemdro.id avatar

I was carrying some HVAC equipment down some stairs last year when I accidentally slip a little and the equipment cut my wrist wide open and blood started rushing out like crazy and my hand went numb instant. I immediately put pressure on my wrist to stop the bleeding and my brother drove me to the hospital. That ride there was so intense, I genuinely felt like i might bleed to death, or even have to lose my hand. It was so surreal, I kept thinking how horrible my family, friends, and my girlfriend of 5 years would feel if I died. In that moment I realized they’re what matters. My job didn’t matter, my social media accounts didn’t matter, my materialistic items I owned didn’t matter. Just the people who I love. After arriving the doctors did a great job at assuring me I’d be fine. I had surgery 2 days later, however, I couldn’t move my wrist or hands for a while. Even now, about 14 months later, half my hand still feels mostly numb all the time, it’s super sensitive, the scar is massive and hasn’t fully healed, and I can’t close my pinky finger no matter how hard I try. It definitely sucked a lot, mostly because I was in between jobs because I had was moving, so I couldn’t work and my girlfriend had to cover so much expenses and guilt took over me like crazy and I felt so worthless. Then I felt even worse cause it caused me to gain so much weight, I even started feeling suicidal for a bit. I’ve learned to accept it though and my life is pretty much back to normal. I wasn’t able to do so many simple things like wear pants with buttons, tie my shoes, using toilet paper was a struggle, driving was hard, locking my door was almost impossible because I needed my other hand to pull my door to get it to lock. Late last year I got a job in a retail store and have since gotten 2 promotions and making the most money I’ve ever made in my life. Around that time I also started eating healthier and I’m down 60 pounds! I’m glad I beat the suicidal thoughts and kept going. Life is awesome.

Robes, or whatever it is that Olgeird wears in The Witcher. Those would look fresh as hell and it would be nice to have an outfit to throw on like a dress.

Some form of medium sized bag that wouldn’t attract the “handbag” stigma. I use a laptop bag due to the amount of stuff I carry with me but it is a bit too big.

Before you do anything, run The Ultimate Windows Utility

“This is a tool that has evolved over several years and achieves much more than just debloating a Windows install. I have expanded it to install the programs you select, which is a bigger selection than ninite. The classic debloat is there, but also includes a tweaks section with quality of life features. To round out everything, I have included my recommended settings for Windows update that I use in a variety of businesses. Misuse of this utility can break your install so please be careful and I do not provide any help or assistance should this happen!”"

One Command - Download and Usage

From an Elevated (Run as Administrator) PowerShell prompt

iwr -useb https://christitus.com/win | iex

And then Debloat more with O&O ShutUp10++

Madbrad200, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?
@Madbrad200@lemmy.world avatar

I agree. I only replace my phone when it stops working.

Battery life is decent for 3-4+ years nowadays.

tweeks,

Check out the Fairphone; you can replace parts like battery and the production line tends to be (more) sustainable. They also provide security updates for 5+ years.

They don’t have really high-end phones though, but personally I think most moderate phones nowadays are fine for practically all usecases. For me it works out fine, as I already used mid-range phones for a couple of years.

I hope they will do something like a subscription for even longer updates (if enough people are interested). Don’t need a new phone if this keeps working / being repairable.

Madbrad200,
@Madbrad200@lemmy.world avatar

I love the idea of Fairphone but it’s too pricy for me unfortunately. my current phone (Redmi Note 10 Pro) only cost £150 ($195) and it’s pretty much the perfect phone for my minimal needs.

tweeks,

That’s of course fair (yes… intended). They are indeed expensive compared to many other phones, especially mid-rangers. It took me a while to decide to switch.

For anyone who can easily afford it though, it might be something to keep in the back of your head perhaps in the future :) I hope this small trend of replacable parts and longtime security support in phones continues.

popemichael, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?
@popemichael@lemmy.world avatar

My number one reason: battery life

Tak,
@Tak@lemmy.ml avatar

They could make the battery last 5+ years before degradation if they made the phones a bit thicker to get the same battery life with lithium iron phosphate cells instead of lithium ion cells. They also don’t turn into spicy pillows or catch fire really too if that means anything to you.

I really don’t understand the obsession with having the thinnest possible phone but also selling $2,000 folding phones that are thick as hell.

popemichael,
@popemichael@lemmy.world avatar

That’s why I support the “right to repair”

Sadly a lot of devices are losing that ability by design

Tak,
@Tak@lemmy.ml avatar

I believe it’s all intentional and I blame capitalism.

popemichael,
@popemichael@lemmy.world avatar

Its less of a belief and more of a fact at this point.

Its still really sad either which way

Ser_Salty,

Selling the thinnest phone, but ship it with a silicone case because the thin-ness makes it too fragile. And also one bit of the phone will just be thicker anyway.

It seems almost like parody. Phones are literally too thin for their own components. If anybody knows of a decent line of phones that aren’t overly skinny, please let me know for when I need a new phone.

markpaskal, in What is the craziest thing that's ever happened in your life?

I had a psychotic break. Of course, I did not know I had developed a mental illness. I thought the Russian mafia was coming to kill me and my family. That made for a very crazy year before I finally got treatment.

Jellojiggle,

Did something trigger the psychotic break? Did you previously have interest in the Russian mafia that led to you believing it was that specific organization coming after you? I’m glad you were able to get help and treatment!

markpaskal,

The shrink said it was triggered by stress at work. I was also on ADHD medication which can contribute but they didn’t think it was the cause or anything.

No, no interest in the Russian mafia but the guy who lived in the apartment below me where I first heard the voices was named Wlad so that’s where my mind went I guess.

Jellojiggle,

Our brains are interesting things. Thanks for sharing :)

“Friends and Family fuck you first”. Sounds like a pretty shitty quote, but it proves to be true as you get older.

Just_A_Human,

palitu,

That is a really sad view on friends and family. I mean, depending on the size of the funking.

My family and friends have been minor funking.

You should choose different friends and make sure that you don’t pass that sentiment on to your kids.

spclagntdanazoe, in What is a beautiful concept or idea that continues to blow your mind?

Frequency hopping. It’s like hiding messages in music. Always loved that idea.

Cl1nk,

Can you explain this concept like I’m 5?i searched on YouTube but the videos look extremely technical

treadful,
@treadful@lemmy.zip avatar

Frequency hopping as I understand it, is just multiple transceivers agreeing to cycle through different previously agreed upon frequencies to communicate. I don’t get the music analogy.

spclagntdanazoe,

So if you consider that different notes of music are different frequencies of sound, each radio frequency “hopped to” would be a different note on a piano being played on either end of the signal.

From Wikipedia: “Antheil and Lamarr developed the idea of using frequency hopping: in this case using a player piano roll to randomly change the signal sent between the control center and torpedo at short bursts within a range of 88 frequencies on the spectrum (88 black and white keys are on a piano keyboard). The specific code for the sequence of frequencies would be held identically by the controlling ship and in the torpedo. This basically encrypted the signal, as it was impossible for the enemy to scan and jam all 88 frequencies because this would have required too much power. Antheil would control the frequency-hopping sequence using a player-piano mechanism, which he had earlier used to score his Ballet Mécanique.”

nekat_emanresu,

aaaand there is the missing part of my understanding about jamming and frequency hopping radios! Thanks
