Melonpoly, in Do you think Technology makes us more lonely...?

I think it’s more just cars making people more isolated.

state_electrician, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

In 20 years, the only ones to remember all the hard work and long hours are your children.

Gargantuanthud,

Oof, this one hit hard for me. I’ve been working a lot of hours lately and I need to start putting my actual life as a priority. Thanks for this.

dsemy, in What's it like working night shift?

I fucking love night shifts. For the last two years I’ve worked exclusively night shifts (23:00-7:00 or 19:00-7:00).

Super unhealthy though - I often sleep only two or three hours before my shift, and I do stuff all day.

This works for me since I never really slept much (I would often stay awake till 3-4 in the morning after work).

With night shifts I just do the same but I get to work when there isn’t much work to do and do stuff I want to do during daytime.

buco, in What is some good things to do with a new pc/laptop/computer?
@buco@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

I wish I had read all this when I got a new computer about a year ago.

Nikki, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?
@Nikki@lemmy.world avatar

“i have d cups grandma, the waitress thinks you have dementia”

StrikerMack,

“I understood that reference.”

Steve Rogers.

Also, I understood that reference. I quite like that quote and the story behind it.

littlecolt, in People who work in food service or customer service: What’s the dumbest thing a customer ever insisted was “the law” or “illegal”?

I work for an ISP and I’ve been told on several occasions by customers that it is illegal for us to see a customer’s connected devices on the router that we supply and manage… Bro if you want to manage your own network, buy your own router and stop bothering me.

HomesliceAbe, in What genres of music do Lemmites enjoy?

Highly recommend the Piano Guys. They mix classical music with modern hits.

Swarfega, in What password manager do you recommend?

If you’re going through all your site’s changing passwords maybe take a look at simplelogin.io to also hide your email address. Some sites block you, which is ridiculous, but for the majority of sites it’s a good idea.

ada, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It’s not the first thought that comes to mind that matters, what’s important is what you after that

This was in the context of racism. I was raised in an racist environment, and I was struggling with the awful thoughts that had been indoctrinated in to me bubbling up when I encountered folk that were the target of that racism.

That quote helped me not be hung up on guilt and self flagellation, and instead to focus on being the person I want to be, rather than the person I was taught to be.

Sandman89,

We’re just happy to have you over here with us. 😄

dudebro,

I feel really bad for those children being brought up by racist parents.

They have two options: either acknowledge their parents for who they are, or don’t.

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

My mum wasn’t racist. She’s the one who helped me see that racism isn’t just the way things are. But everyone else in my family, in my town, in the media… It was everywhere…

Vupperware, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?
@Vupperware@lemmy.world avatar

When camping, late at night, a buddy told another one of my buddies:

“If you can see my face, I can’t see anything”.

I thought it was hilarious and concise and it still sticks with me. If your flashlight is illuminating someone’s face, they are being blinded!

bob_lemon,

This extends to all kinds of directional light sources, notably headlights on cars and bicycles.

BigTechMustBurn, in What's a quote that has stuck with you for your whole life?

“Ignorance is bliss.”

JesusRat, in Do you want to nominate someone for mod?

I nominate Jesus.

JesusRat,

No not me, the real Jesus.

Darc,

He’s like a world mod. Just skipped Lemmy. Just world.

bleph,

I hear he doesn’t really think much of his father’s moderation policies and he might be looking for social media alternatives

dot20,

Will the real Jesus Christ please stand up?

BakoBitz, in What's something you'd change in men's fashion, given the chance?
@BakoBitz@kbin.social avatar

I would drape myself in velvet, if it was socially acceptable @ElectroVagrant

GentlemenPreferBongs, in What movie scared you shitless when you were a child?

My babysitter showed me Critters (in secret) when I was 5. Rather than be scarred, she turned me into a avid horror fan. I saw all the 80’s classics when I was way too young for them thanks to HBO and Cinemax.

None phased me.

Laughably, what finally got me was so mild. In Poltergeist 2 or 3, there’s a scene where the kid’s reflection no longer mimics his own movements. It’s not even the scare, but rather the set-up.

I started staring at mirrors when I was alone, just waiting for my reflection to break into a sinister smile. My fear was, when it did, what would I do? No adult would believe me. Mirrors are unavoidable. Something supernatural would be after me. I knew I wouldn’t be able to pull off some “final girl” shit IRL.

Wahots, in What's something you'd change in men's fashion, given the chance?
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

I’ve seen women rocking shortalls, and want that to come to men’s fashion too. Everyone looks cute in them :)

sideone,
@sideone@lemmy.world avatar

What’s a shortall? Like shorts overalls?

Wahots,
@Wahots@pawb.social avatar

Yup! Shorter versions of overalls for summer. They look really cute on everyone :)
