HobbitFoot, in Does the reddit style format breed toxicity?

It is a problem of an Eternal September. Reddit was set up where the downvote was supposed to mean more than just disagreeing with people, but the influx of users, especially those only participating with Reddit by upvoting and downvoting, couldn’t be taught what you were supposed to do.

Joe_0237,

Eternal September

i genuinely love that i had to look that up, and i learned something! Thanks!

moose_cannon, in What's a good way to prank your coworker?

Ctrl + Alt + up arrow key sets the monitor output to be upside down.

I also am a fan of making the cursor huge and turning on pointer trails.

MythicWolf,

These are good pranks with the right level of irritating. They make it hard to work but not impossible to do the work

perishthethought,

This happened to me. When you didn’t know this is possible in windows, it takes a surprisingly long time to fix, but there’s no real damage done.

gmtom, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

Ive made the argument for years that working out in the gym is by far the worst possible way to work it. Its just so boring and depressing and take sup your limited time.

Why would I spend an hour at the gym working out when I can play football with freinds, or go to a skate park or go mountain biking, or even just go for a run through a park? Its like trying to learn something by just doing math problems over and over again instead of working through actual problems.

Coreidan,

Because all those things you mentioned are sporadic and rely on good weather and scheduling of others. So how often can you even do them? Most people at my age can’t just whip up a game of football when ever.

It’s just easier to go to the gym if you want any chance at a regular routine.

gmtom,

There are always ways to make it work. Like for me I have regularly scheduled volleyball for a couple hours twice a week. Which because its inside I never have to worry about the weather and theres enough people that other peoples schedules arent an issue. And while volleyball can be pretty niche you can find regular open invite football anywhere even in small towns. Then I also go to the skatepark twice a week too which doesnt rely on other and the weather rarely interrupts it, and if it does I go to the one under the overpass instead. Ive been doing this for years, extremely regularly, and the fact that its actually fun and I look forward to it has made it far more regular than when I went to the gym, plus ive made loads of friends, learnt actually skills and dont have to put up with gym bros. So to me there is really no downside.

Nah, it’s definitely a delayed gratification in my case. I don’t dislike working out per se, I just like doing other things more. Hence why I do a couple of physically demanding sports.

_haha_oh_wow_, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?
@_haha_oh_wow_@sh.itjust.works avatar

I used to, but I fell out of the habit. Mostly with strength training, kinda hated cardio haha. The only way I liked cardio was to hop on an elliptical and tune out to a show while I “ran”.

Deez, in What's the point of buying new phones every years?

I have never upgraded every year, I used to every two years, then three. Now I’ve had my iPhone 11 for almost four years, and I’m planning to keep it for 5. It will probably still get new OS updates for another 1 year after that (total of 6).

There is no reason to update your phone every year.

simon574, in What exercises can I do to strengthen my willpower?

What is it you are distracting yourself from? The low motivation could also be that you are not really believing in a goal or you are not enjoying a task because you would rather do something else with your time. As others already said if you “suspect” you have ADHD you could also try therapy.

aaron_griffin, in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?
@aaron_griffin@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, of course. But if you don’t enjoy it, you don’t have to do it, or don’t have to do it at the level you’re attempting. There are 1000 ways to be fit and healthy, you don’t have to pick 2 and do them forever. Experiment.

I start out with the Fermi paradox and might end up anywhere. And once every now and then I read about those two Dutch girls who got lost in the Amazon jungle.

I think about that incident about the two Dutch tourists every few months. It’s just crazy imagining what they went through.

Heldenhirn, (edited ) in I'm being harassed by mosquitoes, how do i kill them all?
  • Fly screens (Unrealistic solution but I wanted to mention it)
  • Get a Pet Frog that eats them
  • Get lots of Spiders making Webs. Be aware that the Pet frog might eat the spiders
  • Flood one of your rooms and make a little swamp where you can plant canivourus plants. The issue is that the swamp will breed more mosquito than it kills but the frog will feel right at home
  • Make a small campfire in your bedroom before you go to sleep. It is known that smoke scares them away. Make sure to keep the windows and door closed so no new mosquito get inside. This is probably the most effective as you won’t get stung for the rest of you life
  • Catch some mosquitos and suck the blood out of them. The other mosquitos will see their wrongdoings and change their ways
Marketsupreme,

Campfire solution worked for m-

Faresh,

Fly screens (Unrealistic solution but I wanted to mention it)

Can I ask why you consider that an unrealistic solution? In my experience the plant based products (lotions/patches etc) are ineffective but I haven’t tried fly screens yet.

Heldenhirn,

It more of a joke because its the only real solution in my list. They are limited to your house but from my experience there’s no way normal mosquitos can go through them. I think mosquitos don’t really give a fuck about smells (at least not enough) and the problem is that they dont spread that well.

8565, in What can a senior desktop support tech do who is burned out?

When I got burnt out I did a hard turn. I now manage a Turkey Farm and just do IT on the side. Most relaxing decision I've ever made

Elegast,
@Elegast@lemmy.ca avatar

Man that’s a jump. My issue is leaving the fairly good pay. But I think it’s going to need to happen soon.

8565,

I left a Factory IT Admin job and honestly after factoring in my free housing only make 1k less a year than I did in IT. but, I left March 2020 and the factory didn't survive COVID. Glad I jumped that ship

Elegast,
@Elegast@lemmy.ca avatar

That’s interesting. How did you come about finding the job? I’ve done IT my whole life and wouldn’t even know what to look for if not IT.

8565,

It's from the community I grew up in (1 mile from my dad's house where I grew up) so it was posted in a community FB page

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

That’s pretty cool actually. Wish I were in a position to do something similar but I need my next step to parlay with the base skill set I already have.

8565,

Picking something that doesn't take much prior skill is a very good way out. (Not saying you necessarily should) but, it's very easy. The Farm even provides me with housing and paid me to move so it worked out very well

8565,

If your under 39 and in decent enough shape (and US based) the Space Force is looking for recruits and has plenty of IT jobs available. When I'm ready to get back in to the service that is my plan currently

6jarjar6,
@6jarjar6@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

I thought they were only recruiting from the AF, did they recently open it up more?

8565,

They never were only recruiting from the air force. They were pulling out of the Army as well. But, for at least the last couple years they have been doing public recruiting as well

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

LOLOLOLO! I am 46, suffer from bipolar disorder, PTSD, and autism. I cannot even qualify for a security clearance, much less go to Space Force. But that much said, I appreciate you reaching out to me. Thanks.

ablackcatstail,

Good god hell yeah it is.

yanyuan,

I’m impressed. To me, managing a Turkey Farm sounds like a lot of work and potentially stress. Isn’t it?

8565,

Almost no stress at all. I have like 1 or two deadlines a month (load out and baby bird arrival) we have 40k birds handled between me and a part time farmhand. Everyday is as easy as walking through barns and picking up dead followed by yard work and maintenance. And once a month I run a litter machine through one of 3 finishers to keep the barns clean. Other than that it's just monitoring bird health which after you get used to it is easy. Most important thing is to keep the birds healthy, comfortable and happy

oats,

Users are definitely harder to train than turkeys

8565,

Users are so hard. Turkeys you just have to find any way they may kill themselves and fix it before they do

flop_leash_973,

And it is more discouraged to kill and eat the users when they get out of line.

8565,

And they taste worse. Farmhands are also hard to train maybe worse than users

LongbottomLeaf, (edited ) in Does anyone actually enjoy working out?

Gyms are weird. However, trail running in my favorite park til I feel like I might go into cardiac arrest is great! Plenty of distracting wildlife, no cars. Pushing past that feeling of “I’m gonna die” as I pass the muscular heavy lifters.

What can you do to cultivate this? Uhh…hate yourself and love the outdoors? But in a “guess I’ll floss cause it hurts” kinda self loathing. Also gotta find a park you wouldn’t mind dying in.

simple, in What can a senior desktop support tech do who is burned out?

QA work has a fairly low barrier of entry, and from there I’ve known a few people who moved from QA into Developer roles. So there’s that route.

ablackcatstail,
@ablackcatstail@lemmy.goblackcat.com avatar

Okay, that sounds promising. By QA I believe you mean software QA, right?

simple,
@simple@lemmy.mywire.xyz avatar

Yep, correct

Different companies have different requirements, but generally if you know a bit of SQL and a bit of Linux terminal commands you should be good. Maybe have a browse through a testing framework like Selenium, though frameworks would vary depending on what the company does, so don’t fret too much about that.

bumbo_jumbo,

Playwright is another good testing framework to lean

ivenoidea,
@ivenoidea@lemmy.world avatar

Can confirm, have taught a lot of QA people coding and got them into developer roles.
