Steinsprut, in What is Kbin?
@Steinsprut@szmer.info avatar

Yeah, it's another platform, heavily inspired by wykop.pl, which combines reddit-like link aggregation and twitter-like Mikroblog

ShoePaste, in What things sound like an awful combination but are surprisingly good together?
@ShoePaste@lemmy.ml avatar

A pickle back! Pickle juice chaser with a shot of Jameson. i thought a pickle back was the most disgusting sounding thing until i tried it. it’s a fantastic chaser for a shot of whiskey.

SonofSonSpock,

I ordered one once and the waiter didn’t know what I was talking about so I just got a beer. He comes back later with a big smile on his face holding a glass with some liquid in it saying he brought me a pickleback. It was premixed. I shot it, it was a lot of liquid, and only once it was in my mouth did I realize they had used bread and butter pickle juice.

Lol! Oh man, that actually sounds awful.

faltuuser, in What is Kbin?

Yes

Gamera8ID,

Can you elaborate?

I read that Kbin defederated with Lemmy because it couldn't initially handle the influx of new users migrating from Reddit, but that it has federated again.

So is it a Lemmy instance, like Beehaw?

I know that Kbin doesn't use communities ("/c/") but uses magazines ("/m/") so I thought it was different.

I also read that there was some new way to post to Lemmy from Mastadon, but I thought those were different, like Reddit and Twitter. But they both rely on something called "ActivityPub"?

So is Kbin similar to Lemmy (by being Reddit-like), but distinct like Mastadon (which is Twitter-like)?

I didn't have a Twitter account, but was a heavy Reddit user. I don't have a Mastadon account, but I'm liking Lemmy. However I have some FOMO about Kbin because I don't understand how it all works together.

Ruben,

I have been exploring Kbin a little bit and can answer some questions.

ActivityPub is a protocol for sharing content. That content can be of multiple types like posts, threads, blogs, videos, microblogs, etc (I forgot the exact names of those types so the names might be off). On Lemmy we have communities, which are comparable to subreddits, that are hubs for ActivityPub content of the thread type. Mastodon is build for microblogs, which are similar to tweets.

Kbin is indeed similar to Lemmy, as it also runs on ActivityPub content, but apart from having communities (which they call magazines), you can also post and read microblogs there.

So if you like Lemmy but you're also on Mastodon or are interested in that, maybe Kbin is more suitable for you.

Gamera8ID,

Very helpful. Thanks!

MustardCabbage, in Is it possible to set Lemmy (web) to show "Subscribed" posts by default?

yes, it's in 'Settings', in the drop down menu under your username. Scroll down to 'Type' and 'Sort Type', and you can set your defaults to whatever you want.

Followupquestion, in What is the worst superpower that you can think of that is actually kinda useful?

Being able to breathe underwater, no boosts to handling pressures and no talking to fish. You can’t go rescue dumb submarines, you still swim slower than any trained seal or dolphin, and cleaning the office fish tank doesn’t require swimming.

But think of the epic bathing you can accomplish. I’m talking FULL. BODY. SUBMERSION.

Followupquestion,

Finally, you could be 100% clean.

ReCursing, in How do I block entire instances?
@ReCursing@kbin.social avatar

Go to kbin.social/d/lemmynsfw.com and click the block button in the right hand column. You can also subscibe to entire instances in the same way!

moreeni,

OP doesn't use kbin

trachemys, in How do I block entire instances?

I don’t think users can block an instance. But you can uncheck “show nsfw” in your settings.

The world is way too loud, and people don't seem to care about it, blocking the problem with Noise Reduction but not at the source of the problem

Thavron, in What is the worst superpower that you can think of that is actually kinda useful?
@Thavron@lemmy.ca avatar

There's a Marvel character who's "super" power is that he is instantly forgotten by everyone the moment they don't see him anymore. Seems like a pretty shitty predicament but it can be very useful.

TurnItOff_OnAgain,

Sounds like The Silence in Dr. Who

3rdBlueWizard,

Seems extremely powerful to me. You can do anything that doesn't get you killed immediately. It makes normal life impossible though. Actually, seems like a lot of interesting premises could come from that.

Haily, in Hypothetically speaking, if Reddit back tracks on their API plan and meets all of the communities expeditions- would you go back to Reddit?

Nope. Not a chance. I have no love for giant corporations, and Reddit has always been particularly shit even by that standard. Say what you want about the evils of Meta / Google / Apple, ETC ETC ETC, but at least they generally try to keep their users happy, or at least using their platforms. Reddit just seem to have absolutely no idea what their users want half the time, Reddit premium anyone? The way they handled, or rather failed to handle, the accessibility issue also leaves a rather bitter taste in my mouth.

lysistrata, in Why vote on posts?

Upvoting a post releases the Good Chemicals in the brain. You do this when you would like the person who made this contribution to do more of that.

Downvoting, in turn, produces the Bad CHemicals. The downvote button was famously invented to replace the previous disincentivizing mehchanism, Hammers.
