Magical/Sacred plants.

There are very active communities on Reddit for magical/sacred plants and even some for selling/trading them. I mostly collect San Pedro cacti among a few others and would love an active community like that here.

mojofrododojo,

well for magic there seems to be lots of psilocybin mycologies, sacred? is that peyote?

Skyhighatrist,

The san pedro cactus contains mescaline which is also present in the peyote cactus.

mhredox,

Peyote, San Pedro, the many, many species that contain DMT, khat, just to name a few.

mojofrododojo,

but are they magic and sacred?

mhredox,

Exceedingly.

The United States has been overthrowing democratically elected governments for a hundred years. The CIA has exported terrorism, trained gorilla soldiers to terrorize and torture civilians, and promoted fascism over democracy. …wikipedia.org/…/United_States_involvement_in_reg…

We have a war on drugs that is really a war on people, an excuse to target people of color. We have a for profit prison system run by private corporations that lobby politicians in what is effectively legal bribery. Our entire economic system, capitalism, allows those with wealth to exploit those without, and to use their power and money to “lobby” politicians. People are never going to get a fair shake.

Edit: The US has amazing people and so much potential to survive and overcome our problems, but there’s a darkness that motivates people in power, maybe it’s fear of communism or fear of powerlessness, idk

Mr_Blott,

It’s greed, mate

Weslee, in How do you cope with the state of the world today?

Don’t spend all your time reading news, they are purposely negative because it generates more interest and money, don’t take everything you read as truth.

99% of these problems won’t turn into anything other than a faded memory.

End of the day, nothing you can do will change what’s happening half way across the world, so why let it change you?

idunnololz, (edited )
@idunnololz@lemmy.world avatar

Not just news but social media (yes that includes Lemmy). Generally anything that invokes some strong emotions will get up votes.

paddirn,

Also, a large part of it I’m assuming is driven by the upcoming US presidential election and a certain ongoing conflict in the world. There is at least one country that benefits from an increase in general chaos and uncertainty in the world. It divides Western military attention and increases discontent and anxiety in Western countries. Alot of our recent problems all lead back to Russia being a general force for chaos in the world, they stand to benefit the most from it.

helmet91,

End of the day, nothing you can do will change what’s happening half way across the world, so why let it change you?

I beg to differ. Here are a few things you can do. I agree these won’t make an impact, but if enough people are willing to do these, it could work:

  • Donate money if you can afford it. (Just carefully check where you’re exactly donating to.)
  • Promote non-propaganda, factual information. Muscovy spreads disinformation through social media and propaganda websites using their trolls. So why can’t ordinary people step up and upvote, share, publish, and promote factual information? Sure, the algorithms of social media platforms favor the disinformation, but again, if enough people are willing to overcome what’s happening, I believe, it could make a change.
  • Promote education. Only stupid people can be influenced by the far right propaganda. Unfortunately there are way too many stupid people.
  • Just do what you’re good at. If your profession is irrelevant, that’s fine. But if you happen to be a hacker, or want to become one, go ahead, and fight online scammers and trolls. Are you a software developer? Wanna be a web developer? Create something that has an impact if you have the free time and interest. Make it open source. Encourage others to join. Again, if you have no affinity for this kind of stuff, it’s totally fine.
  • Do your research and vote on elections.

In my opinion, this kind of mindset of “you cannot do anything, get used to it” is a very demotivating and harmful piece of advice. Because that’s what’s been going on all this time; everyone being ignorant, while evil people never stop doing what they’re doing.

GBU_28, in Whats this on my dog?

jol,

What’s that about

Pyroglyph, (edited )
@Pyroglyph@lemmy.world avatar

There was an AskReddit thread titled “Have you ever felt a deep personal connection to a person you met in a dream only to wake up feeling terrible because you realize they never existed?”

The original comment being referenced has been since deleted, but you can still find some reposts floating around.

Here’s a copy of it:

throw away account cause this is really personal.

My last semester at a certain college I was assulted by a football player for walking where he was trying to drive (note he was 325lbs I was 120lbs), while unconscious on the ground I lived a different life.

I met a wonderful young lady, she made my heart skip and my face red, I pursued her for months and dispatched a few jerk boyfriends before I finally won her over, after two years we got married and almost immediately she bore me a daughter.

I had a great job and my wife didn’t have to work outside of the house, when my daughter was two she [my wife] bore me a son. My son was the joy of my life, I would walk into his room every morning before I left for work and doted on him and my daughter.

One day while sitting on the couch I noticed that the perspective of the lamp was odd, like inverted. It was still in 3D but… just… wrong. (It was a square lamp base, red with gold trim on 4 legs and a white square shade). I was transfixed, I couldn’t look away from it. I stayed up all night staring at it, the next morning I didn’t go to work, something was just not right about that lamp.

I stopped eating, I left the couch only to use the bathroom at first, soon I stopped that too as I wasn’t eating or drinking. I stared at the fucking lamp for 3 days before my wife got really worried, she had someone come and try to talk to me, by this time my cognizance was breaking up and my wife was freaking out. She took the kids to her mother’s house just before I had my epiphany… the lamp is not real… the house is not real, my wife, my kids… none of that is real… the last 10 years of my life are not fucking real!

The lamp started to grow wider and deeper, it was still inverted dimensions, it took up my entire perspective and all I could see was red, I heard voices, screams, all kinds of weird noises and I became aware of pain… a fucking shit ton of pain… the first words I said were “I’m missing teeth” and opened my eyes. I was laying on my back on the sidewalk surrounded by people that I didn’t know, lots were freaking out, I was completely confused.

At some point a cop scooped me up, dragged/walked me across the sidewalk and grass and threw me face down in the back of a cop car, I was still confused.

I was taken to the hospital by the cop (seems he didn’t want to wait for the ambulance to arrive) and give CT scans and shit…

I went through about 3 years of horrid depression, I was grieving the loss of my wife and children and dealing with the knowledge that they never existed, I was scared that I was going insane as I would cry myself to sleep hoping I would see her in my dreams. I never have, but sometimes I see my son, usually just a glimpse out of my peripheral vision, he is perpetually 5 years old and I can never hear what he says.

EDIT (24 hours after post): never though anyone would read this, I changed a line so that it no longer seems that my 2 year old daughter bore a child.

I have never seen Inception or the Star Trek episode so many have mentioned (but I will eventually)

I will not do an AMA

I’ve had many PM’s describing similar experiences and 3 posters stating such experiences are impossible, I’d say more research needs to be done on brain functions. Pre-med students, don’t assume you know everything.

A few have asked if they can write a book/screen play/stage play/rage comic etcetera, please consider this tale open source and have fun with it

jol,

Haha tha ks buddy. I had already found it in know your meme, but this will help others.

bstix, in Is there a word for the feeling of nostalgia for or missing of another lifetime one only lived in a dream?

Yes there are several: fauxstalgia or anemoia

Those are fake word invented for the purpose though.

There is also “anticipatory nostalgia”, which is about being nostalgic for potential future losses.

gregorum, (edited )

All words were invented for a purpose. When that happens, they’re referred to as a neologism.

xkforce,

Theres nothing fake about them.

tubbadu, in Can anyone here get Gboard to gesture type "Lemmy"?

Lemmy

Nope for me it works, I’m using the openboard fork with gesture typing

Squizzy,

Is that a privacy focused alternative? Where’s the APK?

meekah,
@meekah@lemmy.world avatar
tubbadu,

This is the official package that is now unmaintained, I use the fork of one of the original devs: github.com/Helium314/openboard

It supports adding an external swipe type library, and sadly the only working one is the gboard one, that works like a charm however

It is not on fdroid (yet), so you can install it manually or using obtainium

ABasilPlant, (edited )

Worth pointing out that openboard doesn’t support gesture typing. The fork I believe @tubbadu is talking about is:

github.com/erkserkserks/…/v1.4.5-gesture-typing

I use this one.

WashedOver, in How was Rudy Guiliani as mayor of NYC?
@WashedOver@lemmy.ca avatar

When was Times Square rejuvenated? Was it during his watch?

I had read at some point after WW2 Times Sqaure slipped into seedy and run down with building owners on the brink of bankruptcy before efforts were made to reclaim the area from the places that were not desirable.

I wonder if he had any role in that?

Canoe,

I believe you’re thinking of Ed Koch.

blazeknave,

No way! That place was a shit hole until after 9/11 when tourists started coming exponentially more, right ahead of the mass gentrification. In the 90s my mom would whoop my ass if she found out I was hanging out up there after school. Bloomberg capitalized on things and really Disneyfied midtown.

RubberElectrons,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Meh… It was already planned to Disney stylings by the tail end of Dinkins. Giuliani actually followed the plans though.

blazeknave,

I get where you’re coming from. I’d just say that, not being abducted murder or robbed, is not the same as removing the peep shows. I’ll give you the change started earlier, but the actual conversion of tenants wasn’t until later.

RubberElectrons, (edited )
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Lol you don’t have to “give me” anything, both our eyes probably work just fine.

The peep shows weren’t the thing that I’m bummed about, it was the wholesale destruction of anything underground. What’s NYC without the weird, interesting stores and people? Once the area gets washed out, why go?

E: here’s a cool article on what these gentrifiers and other assclowns have in mind for places like NYC: honest-broker.com/…/14-warning-signs-that-you-are…

blazeknave,

Ugh that article hurt my soul. It encapsulates so much of what I’ve been thinking about lately. Have you heard Trent Reznor latest comments on making music?

It feels like everything authentic is… over.

blazeknave,

Speak for yourself, I’m wearing trifocals lmao

Yeah, I think about moving back as a middle aged fulltime single parent… besides friends and family (which are major), there isn’t really a NYC around for me anymore.

All the weird shit is just branded hipster bullshit now. And I’m too old to linger over nyu students at legit art galleries.

I’m in SF (many years now) and coming up for air after the last few years looking for that kind of weird authenticity and it’s not here the same way either.

Checking your link now

RubberElectrons,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

Well… Don’t worry too much. Money moves so that rich cities no longer are, the creatives move around so that centers of creativity aren’t (see Haight Ashbury), etc etc etc.

Look for a spot with friends that calls to you. I miss Washington heights, now that I live a little south of LA. Gonna try Seattle out next, just following where the work is and where the people are.

That said, I bet you’ll find something in NYC if you looked.

blazeknave,

Yeah, I’m sure you’re right. I’m really enjoying our blue bubble coast these days. And TBH, the further from DC, the better.

RubberElectrons,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

There’s some cool weird stuff in sf, what about Folsom street fair, there’s the DNA lounge with Davidson underground music, etc… Lots of kids in the mix, but it’s your life too, fuck it.

blazeknave,

It’s def still SF, right? Same as NYC. There will always be defining characteristics. They’re just not pervasive in cities anymore with everyone so mobile.

RubberElectrons,
@RubberElectrons@lemmy.world avatar

I’d say it’s irrelevant. So NYC had an area that looked a little scuzzy and rundown. It added to the flavor of the city, where people could go for scuzzy entertainment. 🤷
