MostlyGibberish, in How Many Streaming Services Do You Have?

Spotify is the only service I actively use. I’m not big on music fidelity, so for my purposes, it provides value.

The Hulu and Disney+ bundle because my mom and girlfriend use it, and it’s not worth convincing them to use my Jellyfin server.

Prime Video, just because I have Amazon prime, but I don’t think I even have the app installed on any of my devices.

These days, if I’m watching something on my own, I don’t even bother looking for it on streaming apps. I just legally acquire a Blu-ray copy and add it to Jellyfin.

Letstakealook, in What could my upstairs neighbor possibly be doing to make this much noise?

Many people have terrible gaits and slam their heels down as they walk. I don’t know how someone comes to walk this way, as I’d imagine it is comfortable or great for the joints.

Gormadt,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Typically it’s due to shoes

I spent a lot of time barefoot as a kid and now I wear barefoot shoes when not at work, I walk on the balls of my feet

My roommate slams his heels into the ground hard enough I can tell when he gets home as I can hear him walking up the stairs outside the apartment

He wore shoes all the time as a kid and primarily wears boots

EinfachUnersetzlich,

What are barefoot shoes?

Gormadt,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Basically shoes that are super wide for your toes and have no difference in height between your heel and the balls of your feet

They also are typically quite light weight

They take a little getting used to at first but after the little break in period there really nice

These are the ones I’ve got

Rivalarrival,

Basically, moccasins. Very thin, very flexible soles, with a wide toe box, so your feet can fully splay. They offer some protection against sharp rocks and similar hazards, but absolutely no support. Some have individual toes instead of a toe box.

JDubbleu, (edited )

They also make your feet absolutely ripped. I bought a pair from Vivo Barefoot a year and a half ago and they took about a month to not be tiring to walk in. I felt muscles in my feet I didn’t know existed, and now my feet are the most vascular part of my body and look like I do some crazy for specific exercise. I can’t wear normal shoes anymore because my toes feel cramped, not being able to feel the ground feels weird, and I feel like I’m gonna slip way more because I can’t “grip” the ground with my foot.

My back doesn’t hurt from walking anymore. Highly recommend, but you gotta give yourself a month to get used to them. Many barefoot shoe stores do 90 day returns no questions asked to give you time to adjust.

dustyData,

Shoes that don’t restrict the feet movements. Basically gloves for feet. Only protect superficially to allegedly allow the foot full range of motion and train and stimulate the use of all the muscles when walking and running. They reached peak popularity back in 2010. Recently some studies had questioned this claims as they seem to increase the rate of injuries, for of course, they provide no ankle support or torsion protection.

Geek_King, in What is your unpopular flim opinion

I love the first Dune book, and I love the goofy 80’s Dune movie, which was pretty close to the book in terms of getting a lot of the internal dialog in place. But I hated the new Dune movie. I didn’t like how sterile and empty they made the palace, or the weird anus mouth design of the sand worms. Or the silly use of balloons to help lift harvesters. I very much didn’t like how they made Lady Jessica an emotional mess, instead of being in control of her outward emotions, as she was trained to do.

They also screwed up the personal defense shields REAL BAD. The idea that the shields react to kinetic energy, so a fast moving project from a firearm would get stopped, but a slow moving blade would pass through. The fight near the end had people being killed by fast sword strikes by hitting the shields, it was just so jarring and lazy. They also completely misrepresented who and what the Sardukar are. Based on how many people loved the movie, I have an unpopular opinion. Though I found that most people who absolutely loved the movie hadn’t seen the original movie, or read the first book, so they didn’t know anything to color their impression.

Though I found that most people who absolutely loved the movie hadn’t seen the original movie, or read the first book, so they didn’t know anything to color their impression.

Can confirm. I haven’t read the book or watched the old movie and I absolutely loved the new one.

Kerkopithekion,

Heck, did I write this in my sleep? 100% my impressions as well. The ‘pretty but soul-less’ feel, the Lady Jessica constantly looking about to burst into tears, the glossing over things… A personal peeve was the conversation Leto had with Paul back on Caladan; don’t even remember what it was about, but remember grumbling out loud in the cinema because it was just so… one-dimensional. Something like ‘I know how you feel because I felt exactly the same way back in the day!’ Oooohhh buggerrrr ooffffffff! Where are the deep complicated powerful characters, the complex politics, the strong relationships and love? Nah, we’ll just blah blah…

DandomRude, (edited )
@DandomRude@lemmy.world avatar

It bothered me that the scale was barely conveyed. For example, I don’t think it becomes clear how massive the troop movement is when the Atreides take control of Arrakis. I think that would have been fairly easy to illustrate visually by doing a better wide angle shot of Arrakis in space with thousands and thousands of ships heading towards it. I mean, the scene with the ships emerging from the sea as the Atreides leave Caladan is nice, but it seems like it’s just the ruling family and their court moving - not a gigantic force that can permanently occupy an entire planet. But maybe I just don’t remember it correctly.

Geek_King,

That bothered me a ton too. The movie gave the impression that JUST the Atreides and their entourage moved to Arrakis, the palace was so empty, it definitely lacked the grandiose scale the original story had.

Geek_King,

I also feel like because the movie didn’t explain as much as the book or original movie did, people just assumed the new movie was profound and deep, and loved it because of it. I asked a friend who loved it but hadn’t read the book or watched the 80’s movie, who the Sardukar are. He answered that they were a religious order who were good fighters. Again, the new movie just doesn’t give enough context or answers to stuff.

I also can’t express how much I didn’t care for the new Worm design.

mechoman444,

What’s more is the movie is relentlessly gut wrenchingly tear-inducingly boring.

I’ve tried watching it three times I just can’t get through it.

Illuminostro,

Agreed. That’s the director’s aesthetic: giant empty sets that look like giant empty sets.

jpreston2005,

Agreed. The whole movie felt sterile, without any emotional involvement. I’ve read the books, saw the OG movie, the TV series, and all of them did the revolt against atriedes right. This movie plodded along so slowly, that I forgot they were fleeing for their lives. Also, Zendaya. I don’t understand her popularity. She’s got this weird squashed face so having her portray the love interest, Chani, is weird. I don’t get her as MJ in Spiderman for the same reason.

triclops6,

Do you recommend all the books (even the one his son wrote)? I read the 1st one but didn’t love it

Shyfer,

If you didn’t love the first one, I doubt you’ll like the others. I haven’t read all of them yet, but everyone I know who has read them all always started by enjoying the world of the first one first.

mayo,

Villeneuve has been really disappointing. He was good with smaller, more gritty stuff but isn’t a good epic director.

Anticorp, in What do normal people look at on their phones?

If you really want to detox, then put the phone down. Order some magazines, read some books, talk to some people. I did that for 6 months when I was completely overwhelmed and my entire psyche changed. But I eventually craved the interaction, so here I am.

echodot, (edited ) in What is your unpopular flim opinion

I don’t actually like the new Dune movies. I just thought that it had the ast Lord Of The Rings movie energy, and that it just went on a bit longer than i really wanted it to. There was certainly some good bits to it no doubt but they didn’t really feel connected to me.

RatzChatsubo,

I agree I think the movie was way too long

jacksilver,

Did you read the books? Having read the books it was a blast for me, but those sound like fair criticisms if you aren’t already familiar with the source material (which isnt a good thing for a movie to do, it should be able to stand on its own).

MrBusiness, (edited )

As someone who read the books, 3 movies is going to be too much. 2 movies is more than enough for the first book and I think it’s gonna suffer a bit for it. Not as bad as the Hobbit, but I haven’t seen anything get better from getting milked.

I’m wrong, misread an article. Thanks for the info y’all.

HessiaNerd,

Isn’t the third movie going to be Messiah?

jacksilver,

Yeah @mrbusiness had me a bit worried, but it looks like you’re right, if there is a third movie it will be all or part of Messiah. At least according to this interview - polygon.com/…/dune-how-many-parts-movies-sequels-…

Daqu,

1984 had the two captains and Sting… That’s hard to beat.

RBWells, in What is your unpopular flim opinion

I hate Life of Pi. The book. My kid had to read it for school and warned me not to, I thought, well I read fast, no big deal if it’s not great.

I want that two hours of my life back and can’t watch the movie because I hated the book so much. So much.

TheSanSabaSongbird,

Agreed. Very overrated. I was dissapoint.

jameskirk,
@jameskirk@startrek.website avatar

You read a book in two hours?

RBWells,

That one, yes. Not all books, no.

ultra, (edited )

Why?

RBWells,

The whole part when he’s on the boat with the tiger. Awful. The end. Awful. Please don’t make me remember it, I tried to forget.

I couldn’t sit through Pulp Fiction. By the milkshake scene I was done with these characters.

storcholus,

Just curious, how old are you? And how old were you when you saw it?

captain_aggravated,
@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’m 36 now, I was probably 26 or 28 when I sat down to watch it. Hit the stop button saying “Well I don’t give a damn about this.”

whenigrowup356,

Did you watch/enjoy any of Tarantino’s other films?

He’s often praised for his dialogue but tbf I find some of the conversations not at all realistic. I can see how that could rub some people the wrong way.

captain_aggravated,
@captain_aggravated@sh.itjust.works avatar

Inglourious Basterds was okay. I can’t say I’ve been much of a Tarantino fan.

Daqu,

Hi dialogues are so cringey. He thought very hard to make everyone say the coolest thing possible.

Meuzzin, in How Many Streaming Services Do You Have?

Zero (not including my broadband bill). Jellyfin + *Arr Suite of Apps.

lorez, (edited ) in What is your unpopular flim opinion

Dune is complete crap from the soundtrack to the script. The characters are as thick as cardboard and their interactions motivate nothing. It’s full of slow motion nonsense, flying metal dragonflies and Zimmer’s horns. These days filmmakers are convinced visuals make storytelling. They don’t. Dialogue does and here there’s not a single line I remember.

ours,

OP asked for unpopular opinions and you’ve delivered.

Upvoted you because of that and not because I agree with you (I strongly disagree as a matter of fact).

lorez,

The majority likes that movie. I guess more power to you.

Welt,

I liked lorez’s comments because he explained the reasoning and stood by his opinion. Children don’t understand a one-star review doesn’t on its own communicate anything other than the uncontrolled emotion of the viewer which has nothing to do with the film.

NotPersonal,

Not trying to convince you otherwise. But movies are audiovisual media. It’s right there in the name. So they visuals and the audio are a big thing for that medium. Radio theater had no visuals, but they used sound desing to elevate the medium. Books have no audio nor visuals, so they focus on delivering a great story with great dialogue.

Every medium has its strengths and weaknesses and every work within those mediums should focus on them. If there’s ever a movie that is 5hs long with an amazing story and superb dialogue… then it should’ve been a book.

My point is that it’s ok not to like it. But the idea that a movie should have “good dialogue” is a bit misunderstanding what movies are and what the medium is. You can have a good movie with little to no dialogue or a very very basic story.

lorez, (edited )

While I totally agree that audio and visuals are very important to a motion picture, they are not their fulcrum. Motion pictures, like books and theater before em, narrate stories and there’s no better way to describe the actors of said stories than with dialogue. The things said, the tone, that’s what brings characters to life, that’s what I remember and quote. Without them I care for no story cos I relate to no one. I much prefer a well written piece to some visual effects demo reel, that nowadays is easier to make and while I utterly adore Zimmer 's music, in this case I remember no motif, nothing other than blaring horns, sign that even him was not inspired by the movie.

Chastity2323,

So true, I watched dune in theaters with my friends and half of us fell asleep lmao

SkepticalButOpenMinded, in What is your unpopular flim opinion

The critic rating is better than the audience rating. I’ve never seen a film with a high critic rating that didn’t have something worthwhile about it. But I’ve seen a lot of audience hits that were garbage.

BigBananaDealer,
@BigBananaDealer@lemm.ee avatar

did you see the last jedi? that had the highest rating of any star wars film on rotten tomatoes and was completely hated by most audiences

SkepticalButOpenMinded,

Big oof, I had no idea that critics liked that. 91% on RT! OK, that might be the first major exception I’ve come across.

BigBananaDealer,

My counterpoint to that is Rise of Skywalker was widely praised by audiences, at least in comparison to Last Jedi and I fucking hated it.

I have Hulu/Disney bundle, Netflix, and Prime. I canceled Prime after the commercials announcement but I still have a few months remaining. I will miss it but I won’t tolerate commercials in a service I’m paying for.

Next to go will be Netflix after their latest price increase, I will subscribe for a month when I want to watch something on there badly enough.

I just canceled Sirius XM as well, I liked it but need to cut some costs. I figured they would offer me some free months but haven’t yet. They did offer $5 per month which should be $60 but is more like $75 after all the taxes and fees. Tired of playing that game so I refused this time.

And I have adblocked YouTube on my TV, phone, and PC.

Benchmade are horrible. If you’re looking for a good knife, go with strider or extrema ratio.
