logicbomb, in Whats your winter season movie that you must watch every winter?

Groundhog Day every February 2nd

Rhynoplaz,

I tried doing that, but after the first 100 days, I got kind of sick of it.

qooqie, (edited ) in What is your unpopular flim opinion

Horror films are where art flourishes and it has a huge culture of being outside of Hollywood which is just a plus. Also the acting is usually way better

pimento64,

Amazing, every word is wrong

dmention7,

I’m not sure whether to update or downvote. The first sentence doesnt seem too controversial, but hoo boy you nailed it on the second lol

Screw it, upvoted.

Godort,

Horror is a divisive genre, because it has some of the higher highs, but also many of the lowest lows.

pimeys,

I never really watched any horror movies until this October we binge watched almost 40 movies from that genre.

I agree, some of the absolute greatest films are from that genre, and you can find very interesting stuff from there if you dig a bit.

I’m now kind of mad at how I didn’t find Evil Dead earlier in my life. Or The Texas Chain Saw Massacre…

disheveledWallaby, (edited )

Evil Dead 1&2, Army of Darkness are some of my favorite movies growing up. Just rewatched The Howling and it was good but not as good a American Werewolf in London. Friday the 13th and the Hellrazor series were awesome. Lost boys etc. The Gate. Pet Cemetery, Sometimes They Come Back and Cats Eye I thought were great Stephen King adaptations. I really enjoyed The Cube for its creativity and small set.

Still its the SciFi horrors get me the most. Alien series was awesome and Event Horizon were awesome. Something about having nowhere to escape to I think.

pimeys,

Talking about Stephen King, Misery is a great movie.

Labotomized,

I think you’re right and maybe that’s why I prefer horror movies so much over literally all else. And to your point about being outside of Hollywood, I really appreciate it when I don’t recognize any of the actors. It makes it much more immersive for me. Usually much better camera work and lighting too. And Less CGI - atleast the better ones. I hate it when the whole screen is just really good animation :(

otacon239,

Ouiji was the worst offender of this. The first half of the movie, it’s got some of my favorite subtle directing in it, keeping you on your toes, then BAM. Halfway through they’re showing the creature in full view and it’s some generic black goo. Not scary at all. Would have been way better if the horror never showed its face.

XbSuper,

Most horror movies have worse acting than a porno.

Candelestine, in Do the ToS of lemmy instances contain any indication of monetising user data?

Generally speaking, the design of the Fediverse leans towards radical transparency and disclosure.

It’s not particularly private at all. Instead it levels the playing field by making a lot of the data companies would normally be harvesting and selling available to literally everyone with minimal effort, drastically reducing its value. It also just collects relatively little data to begin with.

If, however, you were hiding from a hostile government or something, this is one of the last places I would use for communication.

@noname_yet2077@lemmy.world avatar

If you’re concerned about other folks - Most people don’t give a slightest flying F.

You may (and probably will) find some man-childs having a giggle about it, but also some people that will understand that’s for your good and nice straight teeth

But in some small percentage are weirdos that find it cool and attractive (like me lol)

But if you’re concerned about your daily life with braces - I don’t know, I had the removable ones and those were so uncomfortable and disgusting. Having a piece of plastic on my palate sometimes triggered a gag reflex. So yeah if only I knew I would choose the standard ones

Marin_Rider, (edited ) in What is your unpopular flim opinion

Vegas Vacation is the best of the original National Lampoon vacation movies

it has peak Eddie, great meta commentary on the series, Clark being exposed as the shitcunt he really is, and a hilarious side plot with Wayne newton.

I love Christmas vacation but we always watch Vegas every Christmas too

roamic, in What made up board/card game would be hard to sell to the public either by name or by concept?

Not a board game, but 9/11. Which is a combination of Jenga and Gorodki.

lvxferre, in Getting braces as a young adult?

I’ve seen even people in their 40s using them. I don’t think that it’s a big deal, or that it’s too late for that.

cabbage, in Do the ToS of lemmy instances contain any indication of monetising user data?
@cabbage@piefed.social avatar

In short, anything you publish here will, by design, be broadcast all around to whatever service is interested in listening. Collecting data about fediverse users is as easy as setting up a federated service designed to collect data, and observe what comes in. In some countries there are regulations for what kind of data you're allowed to store, but you could always just go somewhere else and do it.

Nobody is going to buy user data from sh.itjust.works or any other service because why the hell would they do that when they can just collect everything for free.

This is not unlike everything else on the Internet. If you publish something, it can be used. Maybe not legally in all countries, but as we have learned from the AI revolution nobody really cares about legality anyway.

Nothing you post here, or anywhere else on the internet, is private. It's all public, and if companies find a way of profiting off it chances are that they will. If they can't do it legally in the US they will do so somewhere else. The only way of avoiding it is by not publishing in open forums.

If you're worried about your user data, the best you can do is probably to jump around between different accounts.

squiblet, in Why is this sub so against jokes and more lighthearted posts?
@squiblet@kbin.social avatar

The joke or reply-bait (like dallo describes!) posts aren’t great content. Looking over the community it’s mainly moderately serious topics that do make for decent conversation… I don’t see anything about Linux (?) so I assume that’s just your stereotype for Lemmy.

Presi300,
@Presi300@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not really a stereotype, and idm it personally (I do like Linux), it just looks like most posts that aren’t either serious or talking about Linux here just get downvoted to hell

squiblet,
@squiblet@kbin.social avatar

Stereotypes can be accurate. Anyway, I don't know how you're viewing or sorting the community, but your post is the only one on the first page that even mentions Linux.

Deceptichum,
@Deceptichum@kbin.social avatar

I think they’re asking why all of Lemmy doesn’t like jokes, not specifically the asklemmy community.

The title says “this sub”.

garbagebagel, in What Kind of Natural Disasters Occur Where You Live? And How Have You Prepared for Them?

Aside from the Big One (for which I’ve been meaning to make an emergency kit but keep putting off because reasons), we get really bad wildfires now on the west coast so before every summer I load up my inhaler and nasal spray, then I proceed to not go outside for 3 or 4 weeks because outside air bad. Thanks lungs. Thankfully I don’t live where the fires are normally happening, just in the vicinity. if I did, the above mentioned nonexistent emergency kit could be made fireproof and double up for preparedness.

LegionEris, in What could my upstairs neighbor possibly be doing to make this much noise?

We call ours the centaurs who live upstairs sometimes. They’re just some college girls, definitely not disabled or anything. They make just as much noise flying up and down the stairs sometimes. They’re definitely louder than anyone else who has ever lived above or below us. I think they legit do some sort of dance or exercise routine because sometimes it’s very regular, rhythmic. Idk it’s happy sounds. Happy neighbors having a good time don’t usually bother me, no matter how noisy they are. I’m sure I have a limit, but noisy walking and the occasional party isn’t gonna get me there.

radix,
@radix@lemm.ee avatar

That’s really cute. I like hearing people’s music in their nice speakers too, percolating up through the floors, and one of my old housemates was a singer and it was always nice to hear her. Sometimes I’d try to sing along too.

I think it makes me a happier person to hear it. It makes me feel like I’m in a community.

NightAuthor,

The occasional stuff isn’t a problem, it’s just the hours-long full-floorplan pacing sessions that bug me. Thankfully it’s mostly blocked out by my headphones.

One of me Nextdoor neighbors has this laugh that comes through our shared wall (unfortunately my bedroom wall), but like you said, hard to be annoyed with people enjoying themselves. If they’re laughing it up when I’m trying to get to bed I’ll just put on some rain sounds or something.

Atin, in What Kind of Natural Disasters Occur Where You Live? And How Have You Prepared for Them?

Droughts and bushfires are the two biggest worries here. We get occasional floods, but those occur more often in surrounding towns where the local councils haven’t done anything in years to clear out the riverbeds.

forty2, (edited ) in What could my upstairs neighbor possibly be doing to make this much noise?
@forty2@lemmy.world avatar

I love this game! I used to play it all the time back in the day…

  • maybe they’re holding a sumo wrestler training camp?
  • or possibly training for the hobbyhorse championships?
  • they could be amateur wine makers and they’re stomping grapes?
  • they might just be working on their sweet parkour moves?
  • it’s possible that they’re working on their MMA game?
  • slim odds, but they may be anthropophobic and love a good game of bocce?
  • they’re perpetually stuck on the P90X plyometrics workout?
  • you live below Kriss Kross and they’re reliving the glory days?

Edit: in all honesty, some people have just never learned the toe->heel method of walking so they clod around like horses

NightAuthor,

You reminded me that last week I actually could tell they were doing burpees in the Livingroom. Between the cadence of the various noises, and the fact they came in 3 sets of 10, I’m like 99% sure. So that was amusing, counting and identifying that activity.

Rivalarrival, in What could my upstairs neighbor possibly be doing to make this much noise?

Down the road from me is “Top Floor Gymnastics and Dance Center”.

I’m pretty sure the building they operate out of has commercial space on the ground floor and one or two floors of apartments under the gymnastic center.

NightAuthor,

That sounds wildly unpleasant, unless they had some amazing soundproofing

Rivalarrival,

The building they are in predates WWII, so definitely not.

stackPeek, in What song you got on repeat right now?

The Rip - Portishead

This song gives me chills
