Anarki_, in Those of you with lesser-known types of jobs...what do you do?

I work at a ski place, partially with making snow.

No certs needed, mostly learn on the job type stuff.

A snowmobile license is very useful but hardly required.

I think given the choice I’d pick this again.

SheDiceToday,

Is that your only job? And is it career viable or just the current plan. Because, man, that sounds badass. Working outdoors and being Jack Frost? Fun.

Anarki_, (edited )

It’s seasonal. I do gardening in the summer. I definitely see myself coming back to this and the more experience you have the more “valuable” you are for returning!

The snow cannons are badass for sure. https://lemmy.blahaj.zone/pictrs/image/d53625c8-5fcf-4cab-bdb3-08276e95eebb.jpeg

wizzor,

Is there a license requires for driving a snowmobile in your country? Is it a government issued licence or an insurance thing? I have driven them, but I think here a normal driver’s license is enough and even that is only needed when driving on streets (which is often not permitted and even more often impractical).

Anarki_,

Yep, license rewired by law. Therefore it also becomes an insurance thing as driving w/o it will count the same as driving a car without one.

AlmightySnoo, in How do you work full-time and stay awake all shift?
@AlmightySnoo@lemmy.world avatar

Have you had success with “desk” jobs sitting all day

The trick is to not sit all day at your desk. Go for a coffee break and have a short walk outside every now and then. You can also use the Pomodoro technique to break down your work day into small chunks with frequent small breaks: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomodoro_Technique

ShittyBeatlesFCPres, in What kind of wearable device do you want? Assuming it will work and feel like you imagine it would

I won’t be satisfied until I have the full inspector gadget suite, from gadget copter all the way down to gadget rocket skates.

intensely_human, in What's an amusing thing to say before going under general anesthesia?

“Who’s making toast?”

intensely_human, in What aspects are important for non-centralized communities?

Cultural uniformity. There doesn’t need to be full overlap, but in the absence of a government the community needs certain beliefs and behaviors to be universal in order to remain a community.

intensely_human, in Can anyone else see this post?

I’m able to see it. I use the wefwef web client for lemmy.

intensely_human, in What's the name of the belief that gods/entities are quasi-semtient memes (the linguistic term, not the cultural term) in the same manner that corporations and governments are considered people?

GPT-4 is calling it “tulpamancy” with the etymology of that word coming from tibetan buddhism where tulpas are spirits created with the mind.

Modern western adaptations of the philosophy drop the notion of magic or supernatural behavior and just consider them to be personalities which exist in a person’s mind, and for gods to be those personalities replicated across many mind.

Mango, in Is society becoming more fake ?

Any time people have to deal with each other when they’re rather not, people are fake. That’s basically all the time.

RozhkiNozhki, in Do hiccups serve any actual useful biological function?
@RozhkiNozhki@lemmy.world avatar

There was an explanation for it in The Inner Fish book. I’m fuzzy about the details, it’s been a while since I read this but essentially it is to prevent drowning when critters switch from gills to lungs like tadpoles.

jray4559, in Why do most people refuse to accept that they are wrong
@jray4559@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Because most people have their own idea of what is morally right in the world, and they want to cling onto that regardless of what other perspectives may exist. Both sides do this.

Also, in some cases, speaking the truth about something leads to them losing their jobs or livelihoods.

“It is difficult to get a man to understand something, when his salary depends on his not understanding it.” - Upton Sinclair

1rre, (edited ) in Do hiccups serve any actual useful biological function?

I read (this morning) that there’s a theory that hiccups are a reflex to pump air across one’s gills, and are more common in foetuses & premature babies as their lungs aren’t fully developed…

So I guess if that is the case (as it’s a theory) then yes, just not in humans - they’re remnants of over 300 million years ago

onevia, in Would you choose invisibility or teleportation?
@onevia@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Teleportation is the queen of all powers. Invisibility can be basically mimicked with quick teleportation work if needed.

Although my legs would probably atrophy from lack of use, lol. Why walk to the kitchen when I could blink there and get a sandwich and blink back in no time at all?

SpaceNoodle,

Why visit the kitchen at all? Just teleport that sammich straight into the tum-tum.

Also, what’s the king of all powers?

LanternEverywhere,

Time control is the pinnacle of superpowers. Most aspects of every other super power can be achieved or closely appreciated with full time control.

@onevia@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Interesting view point. I would have to consider whether time still passes for the user of the power? If you freeze time for everyone else, do you still age? And if so, I would still take teleportation over that as travel would be instant vs “appearing” instant to outside perspectives.

joeyv120, in Do hiccups serve any actual useful biological function?

The cure I’ve always used is to suck water through a restricted straw. I take a plastic straw, pinch it in the middle with a paperclip, and drink a small glass of water through it.

The science is still out on what causes hiccups, why we get them, and how exactly to stop them.

Bluetreefrog, in Question about Android. Is there a way to replace the system file manager on non-rooted devices?

OP, please re-post in one of the Android communities. Locking.

For me, it’s always swallowed air or food that hasn’t cleared my esophagus, and I can fix it by drinking water. burping and swallowing carefully.
