Vengefu1Tuna, in What kind of wearable device do you want? Assuming it will work and feel like you imagine it would

I miss my Pebble. :( I have yet to find an adequate replacement since it died.

thegreekgeek,
@thegreekgeek@midwest.social avatar

Same, I have the Amazon gts 2 and it’s alright but it’s not the same. Thinking of getting the PineTime next but the firmware was a bit underwhelming last I checked.

kilted_cyclist,

Same! After mine broke I bounced between Samsung and Garmin before landing in a feñix 6 pro sapphire. Battery life is amazing. Watch faces are configurable and Garmin has an application that allows you to build your own faces if you have the time/inclination. And it’s damn near indestructible. Going on 3 years daily wear and it still looks like it could be new. Check out the black Friday deals.

Pons_Aelius, (edited ) in In which scenario would you last longer before being outed as a time traveller?

Scenario 2 is where you would be outed as a time traveller.

Scenario 1 is where you would be outed as a witch.

Not sure witch would happen first.

scottmeme,

Well with scenario 1, it would be fairly quick because people speak way different now than 500 years ago.

grandpaST, (edited )

They will also likely speak way different in 500 years than we do now. We have an idea what 1523 English sounded like. 2523 is uncharted territory.

Pons_Aelius,

We have an idea what 1523 English sounded like.

In the early 2000s the Globe in London did productions of Shakespeare in the original pronunciation.

Here is how the opening of Romeo and Juliet would have sounded.

OneStepAhead,

Pretty neat. I think I caught about half of that. I’m now wondering what percentage of that was more difficult to understand than an average persons speech. I don’t generally talk in iambic pentameter or what-have-you. The flow of the words for something like this is likely making it harder to understand than “regular talk”

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

That sort of reminds me of West Country. Yarp.

Pons_Aelius,

He does for this in.

Yes, there is a definite similarity there.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

I agree. Also, if the climate catastrophe unfolds as predicted, there will be a return to intense regionalization of dialects because people will live in smaller groups and have less contact with outsiders.

Can_you_change_your_username,

European colonization of America wouldn't have started yet so a majority of Americans wouldn't even be on the same continent. Most of us wouldn't even speak the same language as our ancestors. My ancestors would most likely understand English but wouldn't speak it as their primary language. That may somewhat disguise the dialect difference but would cause all sorts of other problems. They may be actively fighting a war with England or they may be in a period of uneasy peace getting ready for the next war with England.

Pons_Aelius, (edited )

For real shits and giggles:

You get dropped exactly where you are now, just 500 years ago. All the European descended people not living in Europe are (very likely) in for a bad time.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Probably not a bad time in the places that had never seen them. It's only the people who they'd already been dicks to by 1523 that you'd need to worry about.

I actually looked this one up, there was no settlement of any kind right on this spot, so I'd have time to sort myself out before approaching a settlement a few days' journey.

Can_you_change_your_username,

I'm in western Appalachia. There were no human settlements here but I might run into a group of hunters. I feel like I'm pretty decent in nature. I've been hunting, hiking, and camping in this area my whole life. With no modern equipment I give myself about a week. Most likely cause of death: Snakebite or eaten by wolves.

grandpaST,

Ya, that’s why I worded it that way. I wouldn’t survive a week landing in midwest North America in 1523. Assuming civilization somehow continues for 500 more years, you would attract much less attention in scenario 2.

intensely_human,

You could play dumb.

name_NULL111653,

That would be an interesting one, because I speak enough old norse and Latin to pass as a foreigner from the far east (until they realise I don’t speak Arabic). But 2523 English will be unrecognizable, and worse, they’d probably recognize our “old” English. It’s like if Shakespeare showed up today, vs some guy from the future who barely speaks English and pretends to only speak an uncommon foreign language.

ChonkyOwlbear,

Scenario 2 you could probably get away with being a dumbfuck foreigner.

blackstampede, (edited )

Unless 500 years in the future travel has been so easy for so long that all cultures have merged into one. Then you’ll be the only foreigner.

NeoNachtwaechter,

Scenario 1 is where you would be outed as a witch.

Unlikely, since I am a man :-)

LaunchesKayaks, in How do you work full-time and stay awake all shift?
@LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world avatar

This applies the when I was working in an office. I’m wfh because of an injury, but will be returning part time next month.

I take my second dose of ADHD medication at 11:30. Right when I start my lunch. I try not to include too many carbs in my lunch because that will make me sleepy.

I also make sure to take the long way back to my desk after using the bathroom to get my blood pumping.

I also drink absurd amounts of coffee and listen to energetic music.

When I am working from home I take a nap during my lunch lol.

Appoxo, in How do you work full-time and stay awake all shift?

As I have ADHD I have my meds + I usually can work without it.
Sometimes I drink black tea at work but it doesnt seem to wake me.

Augustiner, in What kind of wearable device do you want? Assuming it will work and feel like you imagine it would

I already hate that I have to have my phone with me at all times (cause of work and family that wants me to be available). Definitely don’t want to wear another thing tracking me, distracting me and spamming notifications.

If I had to switch my phone to a wearable the best would probably be an earpiece that reads text for me, if needed.

Glasses and wristbands are a privacy nightmare and I can’t wait for people to get AR ads with their shiny new glasses.

manualoverride,

Aw man, why did you have to ruin it by being such a pessimist! An entirely accurate and correct pessimist.

otter,

The hope here was that the device would work the way we want them to

So locally processed data, no tracking (unless you want to track your location intentionally) etc.

Augustiner,

Guess under those circumstances a health tracker might be a useful thing. I’m not a huge fan of quantifying that kinda stuff, but getting a heads up for problems would be nice. Don’t give me any shit like a sleep score or whatever, just beep me if my heart is beating irregularly or something else is wrong.

But as the other guy said, I’m too much of a pessimist to believe in a gadget like that ever existing ;) There’s always gonna be data mining and companies bombarding you with bullshit and ads.

PopShark,

Vision Pro jailbreak when?

MicrowavedTea, in What kind of wearable device do you want? Assuming it will work and feel like you imagine it would

I can’t find an image of it but the phone/watch concept shown in The Peripheral would be cool. Basically a touch screen that can be either flat and work like current smartphones or wrapped around your arm with the whole area being a screen (with a better interface than current smartwatches).

thegreekgeek,
@thegreekgeek@midwest.social avatar

Ooh, like a slap bracelet?

MicrowavedTea,

Kolanaki, in In which scenario would you last longer before being outed as a time traveller?
@Kolanaki@yiffit.net avatar

I think it would be pretty easy to blend into the future than the past. Though I don’t think in either case you’d necessarily be outed as a time traveler. The past, you’re a witch. The future, you’re just a crazy person.

Khanzarate,

Nah the future, you’re like your grandparents who don’t know how to Google, but so much worse. Technology has progressed so far, we wouldn’t recognize it, but it’ll have been taught from. Society will be so fundamentally different that we don’t even have the context to discuss it here. The past, we can make suppositions, and while some will be wrong, we have some idea of what it’s like, but the future, we’d be like a Napoleonic war veteran running out of gas in his car because he can’t read the dials, didn’t know what gas is, and can’t use a gas pump because he has no bank account and cannot open one without a social security card.

Duamerthrax, (edited )

Technology still needs to be designed to be used. Think of all the technology that still retains its basic form and only the material it’s made of significantly changing. The Boomers that call for annoying tech support questions are just refusing to learn a new skill.

toast,

Yeah, I don’t think spoons, and sandwiches, and socks are going to change that much. Most ‘tech’ changes a couple of times in a single lifetime (this was true even several hundred years ago), but the basics stay largely the same. Language is how they’ll catch you

kent_eh,

Who knows.

Maybe sandwiches have been completely forgotten and you can make a nice little business out of making perfectly ordinary sandwiches.

Hyperreality, in What kind of wearable device do you want? Assuming it will work and feel like you imagine it would

Bit of a curve ball, but I'm a huge fan of a simple casio.

When you're in a city or a deprived poorer area, it's far safer to look at your watch than take out your phone.

It's also more professional in a work context, especially in customer facing roles. If you look at your phone to check the time, people are more likely to think you're checking your notifications and not fully engaged in what you're doing.

otter,

Have a casio you recommend?

asceticism,

Not the same commenting user. But I have the same feelings about watches.

I would say the Casio F-91w is the classic and timeless but depending on your needs something like the Casio World Time might be more your speed. IIRC they both have backlights alarms stop watches and tell the time. With the world time tracking all the major time zones and two timezones manually set.

Hyperreality, (edited )

Basic g-shock or the classic F91W.

The former, I'm a fan of the DW5600BB. Blacked out, minimalist, works with almost everything (even a suit), indestructible. A choice even watch snobs can respect. 50-100 dollars/euros on amazon.

The F91W comes in a few fun colours. I personally like black and gold. It's retro, so it's invariably seen as cool. It's also dirt cheap. 10-20 dollars/euros.

They've been making them for decades. A classic. Different colours if that's your style.

intensely_human, in Wat is your favorite breathing technique and what effect does it bestow?

Just paying attention to my breath, and trying to breathe about 5% deeper than I would unconsciously.

If I do that a few minutes a day for a few days, I enter a state of relaxation that’s off the charts.

otter,

A big positive for driving over transit is being able to bring extra stuff that you might need

A bag of holding would fix that. 100% prepared, all the time

Moghul,

Not to mention the ease of carry. No heavy backpacks or unwieldy suitcases.

brygphilomena,

Just don’t forget it on the train.
