MossyFeathers, in Turn a plural into a singular to ruin the title of a movie, book or album

Beaststar: A rubber-hose styled cartoon series about a man’s journey to create music and stage-plays for animals.

A Single Thing, In A Single Place, At A Single Moment In Time (Everything, Everywhere, All At Once): an avant-garde art-house flick featuring a single image of a random object that’s displayed in complete silence for 2h19m. Each screening is unique, showing a different object every time.

One Night At Freddy’s: a gaysploitation film about a one-night stand between Freddy and an unnamed male lover.

A Dungeon and Dragon: An Honorable Thief: a gaysploitation film about a dragon’s relationship with a would-be Robin Hood who attempts to steal the dragon’s horde before falling head-over-heels for the giant reptile. The movie ends with the thief convincing the dragon to be content with the love between them before distributing the dragon’s massive wealth among the nearby townsfolk.

The Super Mario Movie: An Italian-American from the Brooklyn, New York discovers his extra-terrestrial heritage.

It’s Life (IT Lives): a movie about coming to terms with hardship. The movie is presented entirely without character dialogue with running narration read from a detached perspective. The movie follows a professional clown who has become depressed by his job prospects in a world where clowns are rapidly losing popularity.

Jaw: a movie about a man with a prosthetic jaw. Will his prosthetic-induced speech impediment keep him from love?

Star War: an animated movie about an anthropomorphic star that goes off to war and returns with severe PTSD. Can the star’s close relatives survive when the star begins to lash out with solar flares as a result of their trauma?

This is a Spinal Tap: an educational documentary about spinal taps used to help train surgeons about when to use a spinal tap and how to administer one.

Reservoir Dog: a documentary about a stray dog who lives in a reservoir. There is nothing special about the dog. The only dialogue comes in the form of candid interactions between the stray dog and various humans who come into contact with it. The final scene shows the dog being brought to a shelter by animal control where it is vaccinated and nursed back to full health, before eventually being put down as no one wanted to adopt it.

No Country For An Old Man: a documentary about a man who, due to being born homeless during a time of strife and rebellion, grows up to discover that he lacks any form of citizenship or birth records. The movie follows him as he finds himself caught in bureaucracy, bouncing from country to country as each one deports him in spite of his appeals for citizenship on the grounds of statelessness. The movie concludes with him dying homeless and alone, without any possessions or friends. He is buried in a pauper’s field, his body unclaimed and unnamed.

This was fun, but jesus christ this got dark. I know This Is (A) Spinal Tap and It’s Life/IT Lives is a stretch regarding the titles, but they seemed fun to do.

Some opposites:

The Godfathers: a bunch of men fight with each other over who should be the Godfather to their best friend’s children. There can be only one.

Jurassic Parks: oh no there are more of them.

The Terminators: OH NO THERE ARE MORE OF THEM.

Shawns of the Dead: during the zombie apocalypse, a group of men discover that only people named Shawn are immune to the z-virus. The twist comes when one of the Shawns comes out as trans and is immediately overwhelmed by the virus after announcing her new preferred name to the group of surviving Shawns.

Uppies! (Up): A cult animated movie created by a small team of furries about cute animal-people asking/begging humans for uppies.

Yep! (Nope): A live-action movie about a horse ranch and a helpful eldritch alien with a can-do attitude.

Edit: did some formatting stuff.

hamsammy,

Loving your descriptions - really sells the new movie 👏🏼

MossyFeathers,

Thank you!

Swedneck, in Dear Lemmings, what is your personal approach to human diet?
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

i just eat intuitively, it took some training to wean myself off sugar and onto vegetables but now the most unhealthy thing i can get cravings for is cinnamon buns and meals feel incomplete and vaguely gross without some sort of vegetable, ideally green vegetable, in it.

IMO calorie counting and anything as strict as that is just stress-inducing and gives you a pretty fucked up relationship to food. I think the best thing for most people is to just look at the calorie counts but don’t actually worry about it at all, minimize sugar intake, maximize vegetable and fruit consumption, reduce meat consumption, and choose whole-grain options wherever possible.

This lets you enjoy food without stressing about it, and should be extremely easy to follow.
Sugar is basically the only big bad food that matters, it’s super easy to get way too many calories with sugary stuff because it doesn’t make you feel full and is so calorie dense.
Vegetables on the other hand are pretty low in calories and take up tons of space in your stomach, so you feel full and won’t want to eat more than you need. And always choosing whole grain makes sure that even if you get a lot of starch (which is basically sugar but less terrible), you at least also get a bunch of fibre and other nutrients.

And fibre is a bit of a golden bullet i feel: it just generally makes your gut health better and best of all makes taking a dump a much more pleasant process.

Notyou, (edited )

Eating like this helped me kick my sugar habit and lose 90lbs. I also would add fermented foods to help diversify you gut microbiome. Kimchi, sauerkraut, kefir, kombucha, and yogurt (Greek, Iceland, etc…) are all great.

Don’t forget beans and lentils too. Fry some eggs and slide it on a bowl of beans and that’s a good eating, right there.

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

oh yeah big thumbs up to both of those, though i will say that beans and lentils are actually kinda expensive here and dried ones are hilariously inconvenient, yeah sure i’m gonna fucking soak stuff a day in advance lmfao.

What i tend to stick to is frozen peas and haricots verts, that is really cheap (the peas are even domestic!) and can simply be dumped into the meal or quickly reheated in the microwave/boiled/pan fried.

matter,

What’s the problem with soaking beans the night before?

Swedneck,
@Swedneck@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

it’s an arse, it means i have to plan what i’m going to eat way in advance and if i wake up and just… don’t feel like eating beans then i have a bunch of beans i need to consume before they go bad…

matter,

Everyone’s different I guess, but I don’t think of one day before as “way in advance”. Plain boiled beans freeze really well so I just do that if I’ve already made them but my plans change.

intensely_human,

Honestly I’m starting to think “Do you freeze food?” is the most powerful indicator of a person’s overall level of having their shit together.

My hypothalamus sends a new wave of sensory data about 10 times a second. That means if something can’t be accomplished in 100ms, I need project management software to get it done.

“Live in the now” they said. “Closest weapon, closest target” they said. “Go with the flow” they said. Now I have the attention span of a gnat and dried beans are just cruel parodies of food.

What are we talking about anyway?

matter,

At least you write really well, so you’ve got that going for you. I do get that things which involve that much prep don’t work for everyone’s lifestyle, I guess it’s the upside of being pretty boring and living in a country where I don’t have any friends that I can make it work for me.

intensely_human,

I’m just feeling upended because I’m taking care of a family member’s dog at their house, and the place I’d be otherwise is my apartment but it’s pretty new and I was homeless before and just don’t have much routine in my life. Really want more.

Also my apartment’s countertop space is almost nil and it’s not much better at this house.

Not the worst I’ve dealt with though. In college I had an apartment where the countertop space was just the drain area of this big cast iron sink + drain pan thing, and even there I managed to cook a lot.

But always immediate stuff. Onions and eggs and spaghetti and sauce and all that.

Peak routine was during my last relationship. Got really good at great northern beans. Dang I’m gonna take another run at beans I think.

intensely_human,

It’s an asynchronous process that requires me to hold a mental model of the state of an ongoing project.

I mean it’s not that bad, I can put beans in a bowl of water on the counter and not have to remember it because I’ll see the bowl of beans.

But my life is chaotic and I might forget they’re there or just go sleep at a friend’s house or whatever and then I come home and there’s my bowl of beans harboring an entire microscopic civilization entering the industrial age because Siri decided to play dumb when I asked her to remind me in twelve hours that I’ve got beans soaking.

“Here’s what I found on the web for remind me in 12 hours that I’ve got beans soaking”

My brain evolved in a place where soaking beans would require finding a puddle in a rock depression after rainfall. Like unless I come across a tree full of protein bars, I’m fucked.

Yea I wouldn’t bother with games post 2010. Just have a solid RvR open mmo from before 2010.

gutternonsense, (edited ) in No politics inteded: Why isn't Trump after leaving office in any way or shape involved in politics say as member of congress or senate?

John Quincy Adams went on to become a Representative for MA in the House and I’d argue was the only real demotion post-presidency.

William Taft went to the Supreme Court after his Presidency (not exactly a lateral move in and of itself) but was the Chief Justice so it’s probably close. Then again institutions powers wax and wane over time, so it could be argued that it was a demotion.

Lastly, kind of a bonus factoid of post-presidency activity – Teddy Roosevelt, after serving a term plus some (edit: he took over the presidency as the VP after McKinley’s assassination) and was a Republican. He later ran in 1912 as a candidate for the Bull-Moose Party after a rift in the Republican party when they nominated the above W. Taft instead of himself or another more Progressive Republican.

Corkyskog,
@Corkyskog@sh.itjust.works avatar

How is SC seat a demotion? The only real power the president has is wartime, and Americans aren’t fond of war especially if it has a chance to end up at their borders.

calavera,

Aren’t fond to war? Wtf am I reading??

schnurrito,

You think the veto power is not a real power?

Twista713,

In addition to the veto power mentioned above, there’s also the power to issue executive orders and to nominate judges, including supreme justices. Those are fairly significant. There’s also the influence they have over foreign policy.

ChickenLadyLovesLife,

Teddy Roosevelt gets all the glory for his “a man, a plan, a canal: panama” palindrome, but everybody forgets “Taft: fat”.

xantoxis, in No politics inteded: Why isn't Trump after leaving office in any way or shape involved in politics say as member of congress or senate?

In fairness to Trump, he’s been pretty busy defending himself from a record number of indictments. Gets in the way of political participation.

“Subscribed - Hot” is my normal and then once or twice a day I “All - Top 12 Hours” (or Top Day if I haven’t checked in a while).

I’ve got enough subscribed communities that Hot separates most of the chaff and still has a handful of new threads every hour. Then All - Top 12 hours show’s me the day’s best memes.
