A colleague of mine at a different office that I went to visit asked me if I wanted tea or coffee. “Surprise me”, I said.
I got earl grey tea, with milk.
I was certainly surprised, and it wasn’t terrible by any means, quite refreshing actually. I did feel like I was violating a handful of international tea-drinking etiquette treaties at the time mind.
Every few weeks, John Ord does something unusual for most people living in 2019 — he stops by a local hardware store in rural northeastern Pennsylvania to buy coal to heat his home.
Ord’s coal-burning stove burns 24 hours a day when it’s cold. He likes the constant heat it gives off and says it’s cheaper than his other options — oil and electric.
Were vegetarians and don’t buy any prepared foods or much processed food. Inflation hasn’t been uniform. Rice, beans, tofu, and a lot of vegetables are at or near the same price as pre pandemic.
My partner and I are mostly-vegetarian and it’s insane how much stuff still costs. Soy milk is constantly $2-3 a half gallon more than cow milk, veggies are expensive unless you’re only getting rice and beans, and don’t even get me started on meat substitutes
I think it’s less being blinded he’s just a symptom and more hope that he’s a one of a kind cult of personality that no one can replicate to unite the crazies again.
I wouldn’t be surprised if both Trump and Biden die of natural causes in September/October, throwing the November election into chaos as no one has anyone to vote for anymore.
It’s just the sort of chaos this timeline seems to crave.
It might be an okay outcome. No T means split R vote and no B means Kamala becomes first female president. Maybe she runs again, maybe there’s a new nominee.
I don’t think much changes other than losing the spearhead of the MAGA bullshit, although someone will inevitably take that place.
Thankfully I don’t have that worry with Biden. He’s quite fit and healthy, in great shape considering his age. So he has far great chances of surviving each day.
Being fit and healthy doesn’t really exclude much at that age, anything can happen.
My grandpa was fit as a fiddle at 86 outside gardening everyday, then got kidney cancer and a bunch of other stuff all at once, pretty much bedridden within a year.
Stay away from prepared foods and buy more cheap staples like rice, beans, and potatoes. Shop the meats that are the best price per pound and know the highs and lows of fresh fruits and veggies to get better deals. Beef and fish have been basically unaffordable lately while pork and chicken have been more reasonable.
The prepared foods and snacks are getting ridiculous. A half gallon of cold brew coffee is up to $7. I can make it myself for a fraction of that, but it’s more labor for me. A bag of cool ranch doritos was going for $7 a bag… I chose some cheaper chips I don’t like as much, but got 2 bags for $4.50. A can of pad-Thai sauce is $12 at my grocery…
A half gallon of cold brew coffee is up to $7. I can make it myself for a fraction of that, but it’s more labor for me.
I mean, only a little bit of labor. Even with premium grounds, I can’t imagine it costing more than 50 cents to make a half gallon. As for labor, just throw it all in a pitcher, give it a quick shake or stir, then leave it in the fridge for a couple of days. Pour it through a standard filter. I use the basket from my regular coffee maker.
Making your own cold brew is one of the most cost-efficient DIY foods out there.
I’ve been making cold brew with an in-jar filter that is more complicated than it should be but still not hard except for the pre planning for a few days in advance when I’m traveling for work. I’m definitely going to try it the way you describe though.
I learned to sew when I was little, so I have no qualms busting out the kit to put a few stitches in something. It’s not a hard skill to pick up, and definitely something I think everyone should learn. Especially in this day and age, where everything is so damn expensive! Your stitches don’t have to be perfect, they just have to hold.
Exactly. To me throwing out clothes because they have a hole seem alike throwing out the baby with the bathwater. Most of the time a needle and some thread with fix it.
For some reason I thought that modern machine-made socks couldn’t be darned. Maybe because my understanding is that other modern clothes like pants that rip next to a seam can’t be reliably repaired? (Like, the seam holds but the fabric itself rips)
Lol that was my project last weekend with all my undies! They’re all still pretty good, but just some holes where the fabric meets the elastic, so I got out the sewing machine and knocked them out all at once. (Though I spotted one I missed yesterday of course! 😔)
The good thing about patching socks and undies is nobody sees them, so they don’t have to look good!
I take that opportunity to do a little kintsugi in them and use thread that really stands out or patch with a silly fabric. It feels fun to do that, plus when I see it pulling then out of the dresser it reminds me how much money I saved! 😁
Nurses need some fun in their lives too. They see some shit! My GF is a rad tech and does OR and trauma, and patchy drawers are hardly the craziest thing that’d roll in.
If I’m in there for something serious enough for them to see my undies, they’re just gonna cut them off anyway, so they may as well cut off a beat pair. 😉
In a steam locomotive, but a scale model one that was ridden on instead of in. It was actually pretty cool; they still hand-stoked the firebox and everything, just… really small.
