i’m gonna assume this post refers to the US’ prices.
it’s definetely noticeable in germany, but i’ll manage. my worker’s union is currently negotiating prices with my employer, and so far it’s looking pretty good.
but i pray for you guys, they really don’t seem to make life worth living over there.
A wealth tax does seem warranted for billionaires. I don’t like the idea of taxing something inert but honestly that’s how they make money. They borrow against thousands of shares at a time and pay zero taxes on the loan.
The wealth tax has never sat well with me either. We are talking about taxing someone based on the value of an asset that they would need to collateralize or liquidate to pay the tax bill. That doesn’t seem right or fair to me.
On the other hand, I read today about Trader Joe’s and their suit against the NLRB and I’ve changed my mind. They engaged in a bunch of shady union-busting behavior, they got caught, and now they’re arguing the NLRB is unconstitutional. Meanwhile, the NLRB has been wielding this power for like 90 years.
Where we’re at is, obscenely wealthy people who break the law are essentially giving the government the finger and saying they should be allowed to do it. They’re acting as if they believe they are powerful enough that they are no longer subject to laws. Trump and Musk are no different. I’m sure there are plenty more.
It used to be people like that were mostly normal. They would make contributions, get their way most of the time, get some pushback when they went too far, maybe kicked and screamed a little bit, but they would eventually get in line.
Now, they simply say the rules are bullshit and they shouldn’t have to follow them anymore. These people are undermining our government and subverting the rule of law. It’s time they get kicked in the teeth.
They derive their power from wealth. Although our government has plenty of problems, it’s still ours if we can hold onto it. It’s time to make a statement to anyone who dares threaten that. FAFO. I’m all for taxing these fuckers.
Don’t have time for a longer post right now. But here’s my question about the wealth tax -
Trickle down BS and Invisible Hand BS all say that if people have wealth, they WILL reinvest it. That’s the correct thing to do.
When you drive a car, the correct thing to do is drive safely and at a logical speed. If you do irrational driving, you get a ticket.
So why isn’t it logical that if you are participating in a capitalist economy, and not doing the correct thing of constantly reinvesting your money, then the govt should fine you for it?
Wealth shouldn’t just sit around and do nothing, specially in foreign bank accounts. If it does, it should be fined… or taxed.
Tax the income of corporations not the profit. The same way you get taxed your VAT. That means that corporations can’t tax evade: if they make income in a country, they get taxed. They can’t go an declare the profit in the Netherlands or Ireland and skip paying taxes.
Create and use parallel institutions to allow society to thrive without needing to play the billionares economy game. Example: communication tools outside of a market involvement such as Lemmy, Element (matrix). Economy tools. Association tools. See the application of Dual Power by socialists, which is what you are proposing here, a redistribution of power and wealth.
I think you’re just listening to that group a lot? If you go to a sales event or an expo people will say your name and make eye contact. It’s really normal behavior that in a normal situation you don’t need to over analyze but it is being amplified in those situations
Yeah, I mean among friends and coworkers people will definitely call each other by name, and that does still feel weird but not nearly as much. The frequency they use names is just way less and the tone/attitude is different
Sounds like you’d think this was weird in any situation so why are you even asking the question? If you’re going to show respect to someone, you use their name. It’s also a sales tactic to show that you’re paying attention to them and took note of their name when they said it. It makes people more comfortable when you’re personable with them. At least the majority of people. I know everyone’s scared these days to even answer an unknown phone number.
The level of weird it feels to me is pretty different.
When friends do it, and it’s so infrequent, it’s like a very small feeling, and the majority of the weirdness feeling actually comes from me thinking about how I almost never call people by their name, and I’m probably the weird one, and maybe I should make an effort to do it more.
When I see it being done a lot in one conversation it’s a big feeling, and as other people have pointed out, I think a big chunk of the weirdness vibe I get is from the technique being used in a condescending way. And then each time it happens in the same conversation the weird feeling feeds into and amplifies itself, which is what ended up pushing me to ask
I’ve found that when I want to kill a crush I can start looking for characteristics I dislike. Everyone has them and early on in infatuation we gloss over them. But intentionally highlight them and that crush usually goes away pretty quick. Works for me anyway
Really? Man, I always thought it was to study their routines and plan the murder for when they are most alone and have the site and a grave prepared. Ideally away from prying eyes unless you like the thrill of getting caught or whatever…
But that aside, this is really solid advice. Nitpicking things you don’t like is a great option towards losing interest.
I really hope so but the absolute shit show when he does is going to be insane. The conspiracy theories will be like nothing ever imagined. It’s going to be nuts. I’d look forward to it but I could see it getting violent.
Yeah, I’ve been tempted to make an AskLemmy post based on that premise - “If trump dies on the campaign trail of presumably natural causes, what will the aftermath be like” conspiracy shitshow revolving around “Assassinated by the deep state” and/or “Biden directed CIA/FBI/SPLC/CCP/Pelosi to do it” is definitely going to emerge.
Trump is now the Republican Party. He defines it and has virtually no opposition. Even the primary candidates mostly ran on the idea that Trump should win.
However, he also has no successor. When he dies, there’s going to be a scramble to figure out who can be the Trumpyest. There’s not going to be an orderly handover of power. I think it’s going to fracture their voter base between traditional conservatives, who will back someone like Ted Cruz, and the batshit crazy ones, who will back a Don Jr type.
Trump, for want of a better term, has the charisma that the entire party is hanging off of right now. Republicans have handed the fate of their party over to this man, because they have no real policies to sell to voters, and Trump voters don’t care about policy. Once he’s gone, there’s no one waiting in the wings to take over.
There’sno similar phenomenon on the Democratic side. There’s a handful of candidates from 2020 that I could see running again, including Kamala Harris and Pete Buttigieg, as well as newer candidates like Newsom. There might be an attempt to make Harris the heir apparent, but there’s no ride or die candidate the way the gop is with Trump.
I’d love to see Ted Cruz and Ron DeSantis duke it out.
DeSantis actually scares me, he doesn’t give me the deranged lunatic vibes other Republicans have. He gives me the vibes of someone who wants power, and knows how to manipulate the people around him to get it. When I found out he was running for president I was actually a little scared because I thought he had a shot. I’m glad I was wrong in that respect. Let’s keep it that way, and avoid someone like that taking an elected seat.
It’s a sales technique, when someone calls your name often, your brain is fooled to consider the person closer than they really are, making you a little more likely to buy the product/idea they’re selling. Not effective on its own, but you can be 100% sure it’s not the only technique they’re using on you and all the small bits add up eventually.
Just shows how complicit people are, even when guillotineing a billionaire, we don’t know how to acquire their wealth, anyway other comments explain how to do that.
