banana_meccanica, in Gamers who have gamed for a long time

I was more curious at beginning, then I become addicted to MMOs so gaming become focused, while playing casual other games as break from MMOs. Fortunately I defeat my addiction but now I lost interest in gaming, I see many titles but I don’t see any point to play. I remember playing for sharing fun was my deal, PlayStation one with friends then MMOs with guilds and virtual friends. But addiction kicks hard with the needs to grind and grind, to like give at this friends a golden guild-hall, but at what cost? Real life where anything as grow, only misery.

NocturnalMorning, in Gamers who have gamed for a long time

Same, I find I’m super picky with games now, and have a hard time finding new stuff. But I’ll go back and play stuff from when I was a kid for the 17th time no problem.

clearleaf, in What are some modern bullshit jobs?

Anybody working in SEO / “search engine optimisation.” Complete bottomfeeding scumfuck grift. The only reason it’s not considered fraud is because the government hasn’t caught up to it yet.

PracticalParrot,

I’m learning web design, and one of those topics I need to learn is SEO so the websites I make rank higher. While I don’t like the idea of “gaming the system” to rank higher, it kind of becomes a necessity when everyone does it. What for you makes it such a scummy business?

silencioso,

Because of AI, SEO it’s likely to disappear along with search engines. People will just ask AI instead of using Google or Bing.

funkless_eck,

I’ll take the bait a little. I will help small businesses out of SEO holes from time to time. My friends’ business was really stuck, and often you just need an outside eye to point out some obvious things: their home page was a splash screen with no text, they didn’t use the most-searched terms in their headings, they were using text-on-imagd with no alt text.

As, generally, it’s agreed we need businesses to have a society (somewhat unfortunately), and businesses need the internet to function nowadays (mixed blessing), I don’t think it’s necessarily bad to help the smaller guys succeed.

AdminWorker, in What websites do you highly recommend to other likeminded hobbyists?

The problem with “what to buy to get started” is that that question is tantalizingly juicy to advertisers. Therefore, when a place is found it is usually captured by low quality high dollar cost advertisers (like reddit or amazon or essentially all the other sites that carry and recommend hobbiest products).

I think your best bet is to get to know a few people who actually are doing the hobby (not a advertising influencer) and see the cost points for real hobbiests.

Wumbologist,

Isn’t this the point of the OP, to get info from a few people who actually are doing the hobby?

AdminWorker,

He asked for a generalist site, so a site that has already been captured.

Wumbologist,

I don’t see this reflected in the question at all.

All being related to your hobby.

The way I read it, this last line suggests the opposite. OP wants people to recommend resources specific to their own hobbies.

rbesfe, in What are some modern bullshit jobs?

Real estate agents

wulf,

Yes! It shouldn’t be difficult to purchase a house, but when we were looking, none of the seller agents would even talk to us until we had a buyers agent 🙄

AstridWipenaugh,

Years ago my dad was fed up with realtors and you couldn’t list a property for sale without a realtor license. So he figured it’s probably as easy as it seems, seeing how many airhead realtors he’d met. He was right. He read a book and then went and passed the exam to get licensed. Sold his own property himself and never used the license again.

bravesirrbn,

Absolute madlad

Doxatek,

Wow I didn’t know this. How fucking stupid. Why is there this for a house but I can sell anything else

Ejh3k,

The agent we have used for several houses has been indispensable. He got us into our current house before it was listed, and before that he knew all the issues with every house we looked at because he’s been in the area for so long. You may have had bad agents, but some of them are really good at their jobs and add quite a bit of value.

rbesfe,

In property markets where prices are reasonable they can be alright, but up here in Toronto where detached houses go for 3 million plus, there’s just too much incentive for greedy parasites

Freesiana, in Lemmy users, who is the worst person you've ever known?

Cliche as it sounds, my ex. It took so many years and therapy to understand that i was dating person who was very manipulative and perhaps had some kind of personality disorder or something else. My ex sometimes penetraded me while i was sleeping by fingers or penis. Pressuring to anal sex even if i didnt want it, otherwise they would gaslight me or giving me silent treatments if i wasnt agreeing, pressuring to make videos to pornhub because we had money issues while i was grieving my friend’s death, sometimes “forgotting” protection and other things. Relationship ended because they were cheating me with a friend. I wasnt always good person to her cause i started to have anger issues, social anxiety, depression and suicidal thoughts and i am pretty sure that these issues begin with those actions. They tried gaslight me that i caused the cheating, but i am so fucking glad that i trusted myself and end that relationship. It will take loooooong time to heal from the trauma that they caused and trust issues, but i am slowly getting better. If anyone has going throught same, please just please leave and love yourself, it will get better.♥️

Redditgee, in Any advice for someone who broke bones that need surgery to fix?

Do what they tell you, to recover. The surgeon looks bad if you get a bad outcome, so they’ve truly got your best interest at heart. Don’t cut corners!

LaunchesKayaks,
@LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t plan on cutting corners. Gotta recover so my pets don’t suffer.

Mouselemming, (edited )

Yeah, you might need to set up some ongoing help with your pets until you are firmly back on your feet. You will start to be able to do stuff but still need someone to “spot” you in case a pet bowls you over or gets underfoot and you lose balance.

Edit to add: Purring helps heal bones, so be sure to cuddle up and scritch those little chins and ears!

LaunchesKayaks,
@LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world avatar

My parents are helping me with my pets. I’ll be staying with them with my dogs after my surgery. My mom will be stopping by mynhouse twice a day to care for my ducks and check on my cats. My dogs (especially my beagle) love trying to make me feel better, so I expect them to give me so much attention when we are reunited. I already have a great support system. My work is even being hella supportive even though I’ll be out for a while. All of the people in charge have texted me to see how I’m doing.

Mouselemming,

Glad to hear it!

So, I’m up at 4 am with my “I’m not sleepy” kitten, how are you doing?

LaunchesKayaks,
@LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world avatar

Terrible. The pain is so bad that morphine isn’t even taking the edge off. I’m waiting to see if I can have something different for the pain. I haven’t had surgery yet either. Not looking forward to how I’ll be feeling after that.

Mouselemming,

Actually you might feel a little better after the surgery. Your body knows the bones aren’t in their right places, everything that connects them with the rest of you is stretched wrong and screaming with every movement. Even though the surgery will cut some things, it will realign and stabilize things as well so they can start to calm down.

LaunchesKayaks,
@LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world avatar

I’m hoping that the surgery will fix the pain a bit. I broke off the bone in the back of my ankle and I feel it moving around with each movement. It SUCKS.

GissaMittJobb, in So how much "bad" debt are you in?

I guess my mortgage could be considered bad debt on account of being adjustable interest rate - this is however the most common type of mortgage arrangement in Sweden where I live. This has led to my interest rate costs going up an eye watering 400% in about a year.

I’ve got ~130k in loans on it. I’m in the privileged position of being able to pay it off fully if the interest rate costs start exceeding the expected returns from the stock market, though, so feel no need to shed even a single tear for me.

The Swedish housing market is a classic zero interest trap story - low interest rates combined with tax incentives and housing availability rates leading to ownership being significantly more lucrative - has led to prices skyrocketing and debt to income ratios spiraling out of control. With adjustable rates being the most common arrangement - again, due to some truly psychotic public policy - now the population that lent money to buy homes are stuck with sickening monthly payments and no way to get out of the debt, since the prices have dropped below purchase price. Not too much though, because of how crazy scarce the housing is.

Everyone loses but the banks.

As a Dane am I envious of some of your systems like investeringssparkonto, but we have the better mortgage system. My home loan is locked in at 1% for 30 years.

You guys have had ENORMOUS immigration over the last eight years without building homes at commensurate rates. No wonder it placed pressure on housing. I don’t think your government had a realistic housing and immigration plan. I guess that’s why they were voted out. I hope things improve.

actually, I am unstable and an incredible liability. If anything, I am a wealth-shrinking entity, like the common household Offshore Tax Shelter. Beware my economic hoodoo.

ericbomb,

I mean most people saying they don’t have any bad debt, but saying they have good debt isn’t too bad! It is interesting to know how much mortgage people are carrying.

But these days even mortgages feel bad. 400k at 7% is 28k of just interest. So houses feel way out of reach with current prices/rates.

If rates go down prices go up. So doesn’t feel like there is much winning for non home owners.

Art3sian,
@Art3sian@lemmy.world avatar

Housing prices, like everything, is determined by supply/demand. Interest rates are only part of the equation.

The main reason housing is high right now is because of the supply side, and that’s low at the moment because COVID destroyed the global labor market and the supply chain, so materials are sky-high, with fewer people to do the work of building.

Also, as the stock market tanks people move their money into safer places, like cash or property, hurting the supply side even more. This is what cashed up Boomers are doing (yep, we can keep blaming them).

Housing prices won’t come down until supply outweighs demand.

AlexisFR,
@AlexisFR@jlai.lu avatar

With how much they push for 25+ years mortgages you’re going to pay way more than 78k for a 400k one.

onlym3,

Not sure if you mean per year but mortgages are generally going to be over much longer time periods. A couple who I know are looking to buy somewhere new and are looking at getting £400k mortgage or thereabouts. With rates as they are now, and over 25 years, they’ll end up paying back £900k!

ericbomb,

7% per year yes.

28k per year in interest on just a normal home is crazy.

Sethayy,

I’m just enthralled at the idea of how normalized having negative money has become. Something something dystopian

BestBouclettes, in Why are we as humans obsessed with mass-extinction of our species?

It’s pretty ironic that the actual mass extinction that’s currently happening is not really acknowledged by most people.

intensely_human,

You mean the fact that in 100 years we’ll all be dead and all the people from 100 years ago are already dead?

BestBouclettes,

Nope, I’m talking about the sixth mass extinction. The Holocene extinction , caused by human activity.

DancingIsForbidden, (edited ) in Why wasn't NYC's Central Park concept copied by other cities?
@DancingIsForbidden@lemmy.world avatar

As a New Yorker, let me just assure you that it wasn’t really designed with crosstown traffic in mind. If you’re going from West 69th and say, 10th Ave, to East 69th and 2nd, you’re in for a shitshow no matter what you do. This includes walking (try not to be ran over by an Uber walking through Central Park late at night). Taking the subway(what subway line goes from upper east to upper west?? Hahahah you’re fucked!) Or taking a crosstown bus (Takes almost an hour to go from 10th avenue to 2nd avenue cause you’re gonna have to go all the way up/down to the cross park street).

Multiple smaller parks would probably be much better, or just, y’know, having space for trees outside of the designated tree infrastructure.

someguy3,

I think having both large and small (and tree lined streets) are good ideas. But there’s something appealing about a large park that you can really immerse yourself in.

DancingIsForbidden, (edited )
@DancingIsForbidden@lemmy.world avatar

I don’t disagree with you, but due to the geography of New York, midtown smack above the meeting point of the busiest bottlenecks in the nation becomes literally the worst location for it. They could have buried FDR drive near south street seaport like in Boston and just turned the whole southern tip of the island under Houston into a huge park. Or maybe the whole northern tip up near inwood.

lud,

I don’t quite understand how you Americans number streets or why you talk so much about intersections, but I think this is right:

maps.app.goo.gl/PgFcT1f5MCg1cJyd730-22 min with the metro or 30 min walking, or 30-17 by bus.

Vodik_VDK, in What is the most promising pathway to reach universal healthcare?

First you do Universal Pet Health, which you push by just talking about how good it would be for dogs and ranch families.

Then you talk about how silly it is that we have UPH, but not UBH, especially when UBH would help with our nation’s combat readiness.

themusicman,

Nah fuck that. Everyone benefits from universal human healthcare, but free vets overwhelmingly benefit wealthy and rural people.

morphballganon,

What is the B in UBH?

Vodik_VDK,

Basic: we want to ensure everyone drinks pumpkin spice White Claws, has a pH of at least 7.1, or is basically healthy. Their choice.
