@magnetosphere@kbin.social avatar

Objective reality that conflicts with our biases and preconceived ideas. We are really, really bad at handling that in a healthy manner, and WAY too good at denial and self-delusion.

Gormadt, in Be honest: if you had the power to stop time, your morals would go out the window.
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

If you’re honest with yourself about your morals, they wouldn’t change

Mine wouldn’t

Honestly, I’d primarily use the power to sleep

jBlight,

I’m on the same page as you, dude! My first thought was that I could take naps ANYWHERE at ANY TIME. It’d be a dream to never feel tired and always refreshed. Also to have absolutely no pressure from time commitments. I’d just be a happy guy most of the time.

leshy,

Honestly I’m having trouble imagining what terrible things others here seem to be considering doing if they had the power to stop time. Hopefully it’s not more than stealing money from a bank vault?

Iceblade02, (edited )

I suppose it depends a lot on the nature of said time-stopping power. Using it to threaten some of the most powerful people on the planet into using said power to do good (or at least not bad) would be on the list of stuff to do.

For instance - a note threatening Putin with the loss of a toe or something (and further escalating consequences) unless he makes a public statement announcing the intent of Russian Armed forces to withdraw from Ukraine.

Gormadt,
@Gormadt@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

That’s the fun thing about morals, everyone is operating with a different set of morals. Often similar, but some are drastically different.

And sometimes the things that fit within their moral outlines would shock other people

Some people need the threat of terrible consequences to not do terrible things

leshy, (edited )

Ah, I think I know who you mean. gestures to sky

TheInsane42, in What's the simplest thing humans are too dumb to grasp?
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

Humans totally ignore that they are part of nature. Most think that reduced biodiversity won’t include them.

kalkulat,
@kalkulat@lemmy.world avatar

Most of us also ignore that ‘the world’ is a model in our heads that we’ve created with our senses. Some may make better models than others. But what does ‘better’ mean? Stubbing your toe less, getting sick less? Sherlock Holmes?

Also ‘the world’ is very complex and constantly changing. You’re either revising that model or, at some point, you’re living in the past.

Bondrewd, (edited )

I kind of feel the opposite. Most people I know is wary of “destroying nature”.

I think meh. It is just getting streamlined. We are getting for the next phase of human civilization. We are more like an organism with white blood cells and well separated and controlled compartments of bacteria filled sacks. It is bound to get more homogenous.

Higher civilization means the meaning of biodiversity will change domains.

Ilovethebomb,

In a lot of ways we aren’t though. The vast majority of people spend the vast majority of their time in a built environment of some type.

Even when we’re in the “outdoors”, most of us spend most of our time on manmade tracks or paths.

We engage with nature on our terms in a way that is very unique.

bluGill, (edited )

Deer mostly travel on trails they built themselves. They also change their environment greatly (the act of eating thins the trees)

Ilovethebomb,

They don’t drop off tonnes of gravel by helicopter to build a walking track to somewhere though.

bluGill,

That is a difference in degree though.

ada, in Be honest: if you had the power to stop time, your morals would go out the window.
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

your morals would go out the window.

Why would they? I don’t enjoy hurting people, and I wouldn’t start enjoying it if I could magically get away with it.

Decoy321,

The counterargument for this line of thinking is that it’s just theoretical. You don’t have actual experience with the scenario, so you can’t truly know how you’d behave.

We all like to think we’re paragons of virtue. But when the chips are down, most people behave in ways they never expected to.

In the words of an eminent poet, “Everybody got a plan until they get punched in the mouth.”

ada, (edited )
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Sure, I don’t know how I’d react. I know for sure I’d do dodgy, illegal things. I also know that legal and moral are not synonyms. And I also know that the only person I have no choice but to live with is myself, and I have no intention of doing anything that makes me hate myself. Stopping time doesn’t change that.

Zoboomafoo,
@Zoboomafoo@lemmy.world avatar

If I can’t truly know how I’d behave, then this discussion is pointless.

I claim that you don’t know how you’d truly behave, and that people are generally decent and wouldn’t harm others if there were no consequences

TheInsane42, in whats your november wifi usage??
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

I have the lowest possible plan, 3000 MB. Of this I on average use 150-200 when I need to or can be at the office. Now, a medical issue prevents me from commuting, so data usage is abour 20-30 MB. I don’t use to much data, as at home and at work I can use wifi. When visiting I don’t use data, as I’m visiting.

tdawg, in Be honest: if you had the power to stop time, your morals would go out the window.

Finally some time to read

Just because The Boys is gory and pessimistic doesn’t mean it’s realistic

mangosloth,

Sure, but given the state of things, I think we’re closer to the boys than we could ever be to the avengers

The songs are a bit weird to me? But the artists are pretty accurate.

timkmz,

I dont axtually know how spotify calculates the songs, but I believe its a mix between minutes spent listening to the song and how many times the song was played

They should band together and start their own medical corporation

HubertManne, in What's the simplest thing humans are too dumb to grasp?
@HubertManne@kbin.social avatar

first. my current dog learned to deal with this as a puppy. I was astonished. My last dog I was trying to train the concept her whole life. Never saw a dog be able to handle it before but at this point if my current dog starts to go on the other side of an obstruction I say this way and she immediately corrects. For some reason for all other dogs I find they instinctively want to go the wrong way. So its not even random, they think wrapping more is the way to go. As for humans:

"The Greatest Shortcoming of the Human Race Is Man’s Inability To Understand the Exponential Function"

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O133ppiVnWY&t=97s

garibaldi_biscuit,

Amazing video, now thirty years old. By now, you would expect this analysis of population, economic & consumption growth would be essential learning in schools. My feeling is that the world today caries on with even greater ignorance of the consequences of this exponential growth than it did back then.

paddirn, in Be honest: if you had the power to stop time, your morals would go out the window.

It would depend on how the power actually functioned, but my descent into time-stopping degeneracy would probably happen in stages. I would take care of money first, doing whatever to get my house paid off and. Basic needs taken care of for life. Not really sure the quickest and/or easiest way, but robbing a bank maybe? Though that seems a bit too out there for me. Maybe money doesn’t even matter when you can freeze time, you can just grab whatever you want anyways, apart from paying your rent/mortgage. I’d still work my job, but my weekends would probably last awhile. Hell, I’d probably take a day off in between each day. Probably the biggest danger with time-stopping is that I’d prematurely age from all the extra time I’d be taking off (assuming I aged normally while time was still).

cashews_best_nut, in Be honest: if you had the power to stop time, your morals would go out the window.

There’s a film called Hollow Man that explores this. But the guy becomes invisible rather than being able to stop time.

Kanda,

Inspired by the Ring of Gyges from Plato’s Republic. If you ever wondered if there’s anything new under the sun

Aggravationstation,

Yup, invisi-rape the movie
