Post fact-checks (links a bonus) in the comments, which are few enough to scroll and check. That’s where I look for paywall bypasses, TLDRs and will post a screed for additional context if I have opinions that everyone should know.

I have so many questions for and about bacteria. Can I choose a sort of akashic universal bacterial conscious? I could pick a family or something if I have to be more specific, but I nerd to know about bacteria.

Save your money and use it for something nice that you’ll cherish. Standing in line sucks.

KingGordon, in Whats the best Chromebook for the money?

All chromebooks have a drop dead date. Be sure to check the date for any model chrombook you want to buy.

If you are looking for a cheap small laptop with good Linux compatibility and decent specs, I certainly support your search for a chromebook to use as a platform.

However, I am typing this from a refurb Lenovo X380 which was 1200+ when new a few years back, but which I picked up for around 200 bucks a year-ish ago. I have manjaro on it, and it's flawless. Comfy keyboard, pretty good specs, great looking 1080p display.

I liked it so much I talked my mom into getting one when she was on a similar quest recently. She lives too far away for me to push her out of her comfort zone, so she's running Windows on it, but even with Win10 it's a pretty good performer for typical tasks.

I love the darn thing - apologies if I've misread your goal though.

They now have the 16GB model avail for about what I paid for the 8GB model. (And the seller I bought the 8GB model from is charging more for it than for this 16GB model, oddly)

The HP Elite Dragonfly is the best Chromebook currently.

But, as always, the “best for the money” is always relative. The Elite Dragonfly is the best, but the price reflects that.

They both suck lol, I saw someone I recognized for a show, gave them a nod, they nodded back, and I started to walk over to say hi but then saw a sign asking for $20 a conversation so I just kinda laughed and walked off. I didn’t realize how sad it all was when I agreed to go but that was my last comicon. I did bump into some web comic people and told them their work was great on my way out though.

This isn’t necessarily what you want to hear but why are you getting a Chromebook? I’m assuming it’s required for your school, in which case I’d get the cheapest one you can live with

    Rhynoplaz,

This may be obvious to some, but for everyone else: A Chromebook is not a computer. It’s a giant Android phone. Unless all your problems could be solved by a bigger screen and keyboard for your phone, do not buy a Chromebook.

    sky,

You can run any Linux application on them… Not a computer though.

    Deconceptualist,

C’mon, it’s still a computer. It does exactly what most non-technical people need a computer to do. If all your tasks can be done in a web browser, it’s even kinda good at that. I worked exclusively in ChromeOS for more than 8 years and it was a pretty Mac-ish “no fuss, just works” experience.

That said, I myself would never buy one for personal use that doesn’t have Linux firmware. That will give a longer life and the other capabilities you probably have in mind.

    Rhynoplaz,

Technically my car is a computer, but that doesn’t mean I’ll recommend a Toyota Camry to anyone asking about what “computer” to buy.

    Deconceptualist,

lol, I get what you’re saying, but you’ve stretched the analogy well past its breaking point.

Maybe ask yourself, what does a typical student or healthcare staffer need day-to-day that a Chromebook doesn’t provide? Schools and hospitals are some of the biggest purchasers. I don’t think their CTOs would buy your argument.

    barfplanet,

What’s your definition of a computer? Chromebooks might not be your preferred computer, but they meet every definition of computer that I’m aware of, and I know plenty of people who love them. I know at least two people who run a business from them. They’re not for me, but they’re great for others.

    Rhynoplaz,

A tomato meets every definition of a fruit, but if someone says, “Pick up some fruit from the store”, are they going to be happy when you bring back tomatoes?

They’re great for people who want a giant phone.

Surprised I haven’t seen anyone mention something like a very old tree or mycelium network

TurnItOff_OnAgain, in Whats the best Chromebook for the money?

Not sure exactly what you are looking for, but I got my wife the Lenovo duet 5 in sale a while back and she loves it.

Transcendant, in Which organism would you most like to be able to conduct an extended translated interview with?

Dang. I just can’t choose. I would like to communicate with so many.

‘Dogs’ is a tempting response, but I feel like I’d be disappointed and a little disturbed by how slavish we’ve made them. Cats… would probably tell you to fuck off and stop bothering them.

Octopodes and whales I think would make for a very interesting conversation. The octopus is, imo, the closest thing we have to an alien on earth. Iirc their intelligence developed on a completely different pathway to mammals; imo if they didn’t die so quickly they’d be as likely to have become dominant as us smart apes.

A conversation with a virus would be very boring imo. They don’t have a mind, would probably just repeat “REPRODUCTION INEVITABLE, RESISTANCE FUTILE” over and over.

    Rhynoplaz,

    EXTERMINATE!!!

    Transcendant,

I wish I could exterminate the amount of times I typed ‘imo’ in my comment haha.

Neither. It’s a sorta scummy experience overall with the few actors I’ve paid the money for. At least that’s my experience. If they offer an selfie in the autograph line. That’s probably the best experience out of the paid options…

For the official photos. Your rushed through. Actor or whoever doesn’t care your there. Your meeting them for like 30 seconds. Sorta feel like your being taken for your money. ( no way?!?)Actor might say hi how are you? And then your out with an awkward photo.

My best experiences was interacting acting with them naturally by mere chance outside of the con. Or once I waited just for a free autograph with Matt Mercer and that was 200% worth it.

bender223, in Is it actually possible to change your personality

Yes you can. What helped me was to keep asking myself, “what kind of person do I want to be?”

That internal mantra guided me to make different choices to become a different person, a better one, generally. And it’s not even big decisions/choices. It was a lot of little things that I did differently, but consistently.

I’m not saying it’s easy. It’s a process. I had to keep constant, that question, in my mind. Like others have said, habits are hard to break, so it will take some persistence.

    Good luck.

My mini (not really) pig. I’d kill or die to know just exactly how smart he is.

kerr, in Do you know of any obscure useful websites?

Microwave Watt?? Converts cooking instructions to whatever your actual microwave is (mine’s a shitty 700w beast so I have to add about 50% cooking time to most things). www.microwavewatt.com

    GoosLife,

I use that all the time. I have so many friends who just give it however long it says on the packaging and then complain their microwaves suck.

The only thing that can still throw me off course is when the packaging says: “microwave for about 7-9 minutes depending on your microwave”. Bro, what am I supposed to do with this information? I’m ready to go watt for watt, I don’t want to keep an eye on my microwave. I just wanna hear the bing and know it’s done.
