SirToxicAvenger, in How can a naturally anxious person keep from worrying while laid up in bed with a broken ankle and leg?

reading? I’m guessing you have a phone or a laptop now (else how would you post). lots of good, free books available on the internet.

regarding the car - used car prices are still pretty high, if you decide to sell it then the sooner the better. maybe look into getting an ebike or scooter as a replacement.

Economy of movement. I get up from chair, walk to kitchen. Always done as efficiently as possible, start to rise from chair, deftly pick up cup, smooth seamless turn, as I walk into kitchen I efficiently tilt, dance thru doorframe, step of feet perfectly timed to match curved motion of body, arm as it reaches for kitchen sink. Everything must be done as efficiently as possible.

@agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works avatar

Same. I figure out the most efficient way of doing something, and do it that way every time forever. Until I learn a more efficient way, which becomes the new way I do it forever.

shalafi, in What's your weird physical habit?

I stand on my left foot when I’m holding still. Had a coworker ask me, “I don’t mean to be weird, but why do you stand like a girl?”

Had no idea what he meant, so he demonstrated. Yeah, I do the tippy-toe thing. (Girls do it to make their thighs look slimmer, same as they sit in chairs.)

Broke my femur in 4 places back in 2000. Still don’t want weight on that leg, hellish pain does that to you. I’m quite physically active, but standing still? Yeah, en pointe, like a ballerina.

cevn,

I do this too, but switch legs after a wile. Sometimes actually stand on one foot too, practice that balance.

KpntAutismus,

i rotate one of my feet inwards (something around 100°), so that the corresponding knee points at the other one, somehow that’s more comfortable.

jadedwench,

As someone who had to have a gastrocnemius recession, I feel your pain. The flex of your feet are controlled by the soleus when sitting and gastrocnemius when standing. To save you a horrific search, my tendons are too short and had to be lengthened.

I still go on my toes if I am trying to balance or the tendons aren’t quite warmed up yet in the morning. Standing with my heels down for long periods is still not comfortable, but I can at least walk around all day without collapsing. Not the same thing, but I get the being on your toes being comfortable.

solrize, in How do you like to sort your Lemmy feed?

Newest first, subscribed only, occasionally browse withoutl logging in so I see non-subscribed. Down with The Algorithm™.

RizzRustbolt, in What's your weird physical habit?

If I put something down and it is slightly unbalanced, I’ll reposition it and then point my finger at it accusingly so it doesn’t fall over.

KpntAutismus,

i do something similar. that pretty much makes it normal.

daddyjones,
@daddyjones@lemmy.world avatar

I think I also do this. The pointing is more of a “stay” command, though.

Just like old forums and BBS, where only adding something to the dialogue pushes it up. Votes are meaningless to the sorting.

Take care of yourself and ankle. Everything else will work itself out

APassenger, in How can a naturally anxious person keep from worrying while laid up in bed with a broken ankle and leg?

I haven’t seen it mentioned in the sections I’ve scrolled.

First, there’s some great advice already out there. What I’ll add: breathing exercises, especially box breathing. That, with meditation, has helped me. That can be Headapace, Calm, YouTube, and more. I’ve found the voice and timbre of the speaker matters to me and changes how well it works.

My wife likes some people, I like others. And that’s okay.

The breathing and meditation never immediately helped until I’d learned how to transition to a more “present” frame of mind, but they helped me build the pathway/shortcut.

Stay strong and we’re pulling for you.

When doing dishes, I tap silverware on the edge of the sink to remove any water before putting it into drying rack. Absolutely useless, but for some reason I do it.

ada, in Does federation connect to a single lemmy network, or can there be multiple?
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Your instance connects directly to other instances. All of the lemmy instances doing that with each other is the lemmy network.

Each instance can connect with any other instance unless blocked, but will not do so until someone on your instance follows a community on the remote instance.

In short, there is no way to see everything, and there is no one true view

Valmond,

Couldn’t you make a script crawl the lemmy-space with API calls and just add all instances to your private instance?

I mean if it can take the hit it would have it all :-)

e0qdk,
@e0qdk@kbin.social avatar

You could crawl the Fediverse looking for instances and communities of the sort that your instance understands, but new servers and communities can show up whenever, so you'd have to keep looking continuously. Stuff also gets interesting because different servers have different views of content.

I've seen posts from users on two different servers talking in a thread on a 3rd server asking other users to help proxy messages manually between them because one of the servers was defederated from another and the messages were only going one way between the two users... I'm not sure in that case what the communication pattern was between the three servers (never mind me on kbin.social -- which isn't a Lemmy server at all -- also able to see the conversation), but it seemed like a big headache.

I've manually gone to different instances to make sure my posts show up when I make them; kbin is often pretty bad at getting new photo threads to federate out and sometimes needs a bit of coaxing... Looking at my profile on those instances though shows wildly different thread and comment counts sometimes. As of the time of writing this (before posting this comment) I have 30 threads and 85 comments listed in my profile on kbin.social. lemmy.world shows me as having 30 "posts" (threads) and 78 comments. lemmy.mindoki.com (your instance) shows 0 posts and just 10 comments!

There's also users on Mastodon and Misskey which show up for me as part of the regular experience of using kbin but which are a bit more awkward to interact with from Lemmy, I think? If I manually put in a mastodon.social user's account into lemmy.world's user lookup, for example, I can see some of their posts, but I'm not sure if they would ever actually show up anywhere on Lemmy without manually looking for a user?

Nevermind the other parts of the Fediverse like Peertube and AP-enabled Wordpress blogs and whatever else is out there... You can probably get a decent view of most of the Lemmy/kbin-like communities if you have a good list of servers to scrape community lists from and subscribe to everything you find regularly, but I think you'll still have some problems in practice.

Valmond,

True true. I also forgot about the rest of the fediverse …

lazylion_ca,

I think what many find confusing is that there is no master lemmy server to facilitate instances finding each other. I know they use the Activitypub protocol, but I dont know what it does.

I also dont understand how torrent clients find each other.

inspxtr,

In short, there is no way to see everything, and there is no one true view

I thought viewing on the browser without logging in may show everything? Is that not true?

gamermanh,
@gamermanh@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

You’ll only see what the instance you’re viewing has federated with (as well as it’s own, obvs)

new_guy,

It may show everything that the instance itself knows about.

The “true view” they’re saying is like if there’s an instance that federates with every single other instance but that’s highly improbable

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

More impossible than improbable. An instance that willingly federates with every other instance would be blocked in a heart beat by many other instance admins, because if they’re fine federating with CSAM, nazis and the like, then they’re not going to be welcome.

OceanSoap, in What's your weird physical habit?

When I’m lying in bed on my side, I move my feet against each other in little circular motions, like a figure 8, so that my heels and the big toe move around the arch.

I have no idea when it started and never realized I was doing it until my ex pointed it out to me one night in bed.

thegreatgarbo,

Oh My God. I do the same thing when I’m cozy in bed falling asleep! It’s so comforting!

TheDoctorDonna,

Are we making biscuits? I do it too lol.

ChaoticNeutralCzech, in Does federation connect to a single lemmy network, or can there be multiple?

Yes, there can be two or more networks that just about completely defederate each other. However, you can host a Lemmy instance and federate with whomever you see fit unless they block you.

yardy_sardley, in Does federation connect to a single lemmy network, or can there be multiple?

The way I think it works is that your local instance hosts its own communities, and then it will reach out to other instances to grab content from every external community that at least one local user has subscribed to. “All” mode is limited to that set of content.

So I think the only way to see the entire set of all content on lemmy would be to meticulously subscribe to every single community on every single instance.

And someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but I think you can still subscribe to subs on defederated instances, it’s just the interactions that don’t get passed back and forth.

wetferret,
@wetferret@lemmy.world avatar

Interesting. Is there a way to see which servers mine is currently federated with?

wetferret,
@wetferret@lemmy.world avatar

Ah, I found the link at the bottom of the main page. I had no idea there were so many instances!

Max_P,
@Max_P@lemmy.max-p.me avatar

and then it will reach out to other instances to grab content from every external community that at least one local user has subscribed to

It’s the other way around. The local user subscribes to the community on the remote instance, which causes the remote instance to then push you every action that occurs on that community as it happens. The pull method is only used once and doesn’t bring in comments, it’s meant as a preview for when a remote community is used for the first time.

And this is why their content won’t make it to your instance: it expects the other instance to send it to you, but they’re refusing to. Similarly, they won’t accept content from your instance, even though it’s trying to.

Local and remote communities are pretty similar internally, federation happens as a separate process in a queue system.

This leads to this:

you can still subscribe to subs on defederated instances, it’s just the interactions that don’t get passed back and forth.

waterbogan, in Dear Lemmings, what is your personal approach to human diet?

I try to eat a lot of vegtables and some fruit because I like those, and a minimum of meat, dairy etc. Basically only eat meat when someone else cooks it for me. Dont like anything really sweet or really salty, and dont eat stuff like bacon, salami, ham etc because I dont like it anyway. Eat quite a lot of wholegrain bread because I like it

Mostly just eat what I like in moderation it just so happens I dislike a lot of unhealthy stuff (except biscuits/ cookies) and like a lot of healthy stuff, so I dont really have a “system” as such, just preferences. Also dont drink alcohol

BigBlackCockroach,
@BigBlackCockroach@lemmy.world avatar

except biscuits/ cookies

How do you deal this your love for cookies? I imagine cookies is probably one of the most dangerous weaknesses to have. Especially chocolate cookies with chocolate chips I would find difficult to pass on and probably would go through an entire display if enough milk was available. 😈

waterbogan,

I stop at 2-3. Also I’m not that keen on chocolate unless its very dark chocolate, I like chocolate that is about the same colour as bitumen. I prefer biscuits with fruit/ nuts. I also have with strong, black unsweetened tea

garbagebagel, in What's your weird physical habit?

When I sit down to pee, I HAVE to rub my hands together before I release the pee. I started because I was cold one day and have never been able to stop. I hate it but it makes me feel so wrong if I don’t do it. I’ve always wondered if other people do it or if they just think I just like rubbing my hands in the stall like a weirdo.

thegreatgarbo,

K, I was waiting for a pee one. Women that have had children might know this from their OB/Gyn telling them this if they have problems starting peeing after pregnancy. When I pee I tickle my back at the base of my spine. There’s a nerve ending there that stimulates the bladder and amplifies the sensation of bladder relief a billion times. It’s addictive and I can’t stop! Please tell me I’m not alone.
