kent_eh, in In which scenario would you last longer before being outed as a time traveller?

Depends if the future is Star Trek type utopia or Terminator style post rise of the machines.

Or even better: a slap bracelet in the shape of a phone

hungryphrog, in What kind of wearable device do you want? Assuming it will work and feel like you imagine it would

A ring that would have a button that, when pressed, would generate some kind of hologram touchscreen or turn into a lightweight phone.

Kamen Rider suit, complete with being able to shout, “Henshin!” and transform.

    No I will not elaborate.

i’m a simple man: i just want 108 keys split into two panels on a vest. USB-A connector would be fine, maybe even ideal. i’ll jack it into the system i want. i guess it would need a killswitch or something.

Devi, in In which scenario would you last longer before being outed as a time traveller?

So how about, you go to the future, look up a museum of your time, then just go and be yourself, like the people who do similar in museums now of the past.

Either way though, unless time travel has become widespread in the future, you wouldn't be outed, people would just straight think you're a bit odd. There's people now who straight up claim to be time travellers and we're just like, OK mate, suuuure.

    grandpaST,

You may look more than a bit odd if you go to the past and someone notices the phone you forgot to remove from your jean pocket. Or you start making predictions like Nostradamus that are all accurate.

    Devi,

I think even then people are too skeptical. I could stand in Trafalgar square and start levitating and everyone will be like "Well done, clever trick!"

Keeping it clean, I think I’d want hotshot contact lenses, that could provide clear vision in all conditions plus when asked, project for me readable information as though there was a page in front of me. And modes like magnification.

If NSFW allowed, I can think of a few more that would be nice to have. But given the choice, still would prefer the super eyes.

technologicalcaveman, in If you could custom make your *perfect* shoes, what features would they have?

My favorite shoes are the Red Wing Iron Ranger's. I worked for them for 3 years and when I left I was gifted my second pair. They're great shoes in everyway. I only wish they had an 8 inch version available in the states. They had one back then in Europe, but nothing stateside. My two sets and the pile of other shoes I got when I worked there have been going strong some years on so I haven't boot shopped in a while, maybe they finally took my advice and did it.

I want the earring stud connected to a personal Ai like in Enders Game. The author (Orson Scott Card) called her Jane.

Of course in the book she was completely connected and insanely intelligent so made him in riches beyond belief while he was doing things like space traveling. Nice side feature.

The aliens near the end were probably the biggest sf heartbreak ever for me. I want a sequel to Children of the Mind :(

    intensely_human,

Hey ChatGPT, figure out a way to teleport me anywhere in the universe thx

commie, in What makes video games addictive for you?

i don’t play games any more (at least, hardly), but these are the things i’ve learned about my preferences in games over the years, especially the ones that i played a LOT.

in rpg/rts games: early-game bugs that unlock any infinite resource. SOLVED skill trees or level systems that i can read then try different configurations. customizable bots are nice, too.

in rts/fps: solid, fully unlocked multiplayer with custom maps. lan gaming with no DRM so i can pitch a disc to my friends and we all install and play is great, but ubiquitous cracks are also fine. scriptable interfaces for combat tricks like the 4-shot glock in CS1.6 add an extra level of panache for me.

fighting games: solid controls, definable keys. also, combos that can be executed without timing: let me just input all the keys in the right order. also, please include a full-unlock cheatcode.

platformers/beatemups: let me run-and-gun. walljumps and double jumps are cool. if you want to throw in a few extra moves or let me build up to an ultimate, that’s cool, but i would like some control over which skills i pick up. having a co-op on these adds a lot of fun.

puzzle games: don’t make them. also, don’t put puzzles in any of the other game types. puzzles suck. fuck puzzles.

also, i don’t really give afuck about the story, even in the rpgs. i just wanna build out a character. if you can build up some interesting lore around MY quest to learn every skill/get all the equipment, that’s fine.

RBWells, in In which scenario would you last longer before being outed as a time traveller?

500 years in the past, I’d not survive long enough to be outed. It was not a good time to be a woman.

500 years in the future, hard to predict but I’d take that option if offered. Except with none of whatever currency they use and no ID would likely starve or be arrested for trying to evade identification.

HonorIsDead, in If you could custom make your *perfect* shoes, what features would they have?

Id need a fan to get rid of moisture when it’s hot and my feet are sweaty.

Quick swap method for the tread of the bottom as it becomes worn or to suit another purpose - need nonslip non conductive bottom at work -swap as needed or maybe need better support for long distance running on pavement for your work out - swap to the tread for that

Shoe laces are gone I want a one hand quick latch or something. I’ve seen them on helmets adapt it to a shoe please.

HonorIsDead, in What makes video games addictive for you?

For me it’s the sense of progression. I cognitively know it’s meaningless progression but emotionally I still feel value out of that artificial progression. Like I’ve achieved something. In addition to that it’s freeing in that it’s the most objectively fair setting(I suppose this is less true in modern games than it used to be sadly) in a game it doesn’t matter who you are or what your reality is, it doesn’t exist there. No problems from your real life have to exist there so that escapism can be a very addictive coping mechanism.

I just want basic running shoes that are $30/pair and will not change in any way for the next 40 years. Basically, I just want a pair of New Balance shoes on sale from joesnewbalanceoutlet.com for the good old price they used to offer 3 years ago. The only problem with them at the moment is they have raised the price floor to $40 and the style rotates too much. I just want the same stupid thing every time.

    Some key features:

    1. a little rubber around the toe to keep the puddles out
    2. breathable top
    3. cushy bottom
    4. dont change

I hear a lot of this BIFL for shoes stuff. I have no intention of keeping my shoes longer than 6-9 months. At $30/pair, they are disposable. When I accidentally step in dog crap, they become disposable immediately.

I also have no interest in leather. Might last a long time, but for me it is like putting a ziplock bag on my feet and it turns into a swamp real fast.

Sneakers/Tennis/Running shoes that have automatically pop/retracting heel wheels like Heelys

You lock your shoes together a certain way to engage the wheels which lock in place so you can skate around. When you’re done, you lock in the opposite direction which causes the wheels to eject and swing out to rest on the top of the shoe so it stays out of the way.

You get the ultimate tactical shoe that you can run and play sports in which also also double as Heelys when you need them to

Optionally, make the wheels electric powered as well lol
