intensely_human, in What's the name of the belief that gods/entities are quasi-semtient memes (the linguistic term, not the cultural term) in the same manner that corporations and governments are considered people?

GPT-4 is calling it “tulpamancy” with the etymology of that word coming from tibetan buddhism where tulpas are spirits created with the mind.

Modern western adaptations of the philosophy drop the notion of magic or supernatural behavior and just consider them to be personalities which exist in a person’s mind, and for gods to be those personalities replicated across many mind.

intensely_human, in Can anyone else see this post?

I’m able to see it. I use the wefwef web client for lemmy.

intensely_human, in What aspects are important for non-centralized communities?

Cultural uniformity. There doesn’t need to be full overlap, but in the absence of a government the community needs certain beliefs and behaviors to be universal in order to remain a community.

Bye, (edited ) in How do you work full-time and stay awake all shift?

OP I’m sorry all these bootlickers are telling you you’re sick or wrong or bad for not wanting to be awake for a needlessly long “full day” of work. I don’t have a sleep disorder but I can’t do it either. You know how I know I don’t have a sleep disorder? I don’t get sleepy on the weekends.

Anyways here’s how I’ve solved it. What I do is I show up at 10, take a 2-hour lunch break, then leave at 3. They don’t even know I’m gone.

Don’t let these assholes break your spirit, stay strong.

GutterPunch,

intensely_human, in What's an amusing thing to say before going under general anesthesia?

“Who’s making toast?”

AFKBRBChocolate, in Do hiccups serve any actual useful biological function?

Probably echoing what others have said, but here’s an article with a salient section:

With all these disadvantages, and hardly any advantages to speak of, you might be wondering if hiccups serve a purpose at all. Well, some scientists have argued in the affirmative.

They point to the fact that even human fetuses hiccup, long before they’re born. In fact, the diaphragmatic spasms are more common in infants than in adults. It’s possible that this reflex helps prevent fetuses from breathing in amniotic fluid while still in the womb; likewise, it could prevent newborns from choking on milk while breastfeeding.

And still others have proposed that hiccuping in the womb trains a fetus’ respiratory muscles for all the breathing they will have to do after birth.

But humans aren’t the only animals that hiccup; pretty much any species that breathes exclusively air — including all mammals — can suffer the same fate. (Birds and reptiles, on the other hand, get a free pass.)

In fact, that’s the reasoning behind another theory, which posits that hiccups are merely an evolutionary “leftover” in mammals, dating all the way back to our fishy ancestors. When these species transitioned from gill-based breathing in the water to lung-based breathing on land, while still possessing both organs, a breathing system that allowed them to quickly close the glottis and direct water only to the gills was beneficial.

We see a similar process play out on a smaller scale when tadpoles grow up and transition into frog-hood. And that may not be a coincidence; believe it or not, the neural patterning that generates a hiccup in humans is almost identical to the neural patterning involved in respiration in amphibians.

over_clox,

Very interesting! 👍

Nemo,

When did we stop spelling it hiccough, though?

wandermind,

Hiccough is a mistaken newer spelling based on the association with coughing, hiccup is the original.

over_clox,

When did we ever start?

That sounds like a combo reflex if you ask me, which actually does happen to me around 20 minutes after I take a vitamin B12 pill. I’ll get like all the reflexes all at once, sneeze, hiccups, coughing, urge to vomit, all at once. All from a vitamin B12 pill. Never again!

Have you had success with “desk” jobs sitting all day

The trick is to not sit all day at your desk. Go for a coffee break and have a short walk outside every now and then. You can also use the Pomodoro technique to break down your work day into small chunks with frequent small breaks: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pomodoro_Technique

Unrelated, but I just noticed that Lemmy 0.19 already allows exporting your settings and choosing to open links in new tab. Cool.

kalkulat, in Is society becoming more fake ?

I think it’s becoming more see-thru. More fake … what’s an example of a non-fake society?

Pons_Aelius, (edited ) in If another species on Earth began to develop civilization, how would you like to see them approached?

I seriously doubt it would be possible with humans still in the picture due to our impact on the biosphere and resource use.

No matter what high minded principles we might espouse, human history shows that we fuck up less tech advanced cultures, even when we think we are trying to help.

Case in point North Sentinel Island.

TLDR: Hunter gatherer society that the world has decided to leave alone as they do not want contact but some fuckhead US christian decided he knew better, attempted contact to tell them about God or whatever and got himself killed. While possibly infecting them with something they have no immunity for.

ALostInquirer,

Suppose it was somehow possible though, beyond simply not intentionally/unintentionally fucking them up, what would you like to see?

Pons_Aelius,

Leave them the fuck alone.

otter, (edited ) in If another species on Earth began to develop civilization, how would you like to see them approached?

I feel like avoiding them or waiting might end up with a situation where some group of humans causes irreversible harm because they think they know better.

Once enough deliberation has been done and we’re ready to act in good faith, we should probably make contact and set a good precedent quickly. Maybe then we can guide future interactions in a more positive way?

charliespider, in If another species on Earth began to develop civilization, how would you like to see them approached?

I’m assuming this is about the British? If that’s the case then I say a hands off approach because it would be interesting to see if they develop any culinary skills. Who knows, maybe if their society evolves enough, they might even be capable of participating in economic trade with others. Stranger things have happened.

ALostInquirer,

No…Not the British. More early human evolution where we saw homo sapiens existing alongside homo neanderthalensis, and wondering if that were to happen again (albeit possibly with a less related and more distinct species), how we might do things differently.

Craig, in Is society becoming more fake ?

As in misinformation and decimation of fictitious information yes social media has given everyone a megaphone. It’s also easier to find people who have similar conspiratorial views and spiral down into believing and contributing to fake news etc. and the general feeling that you can trust something to be real and not something yelled at you from a big megaphone.

As with individuals, I’m not sure where I read it first and I don’t feel like googling it now but…

Everyone has three selves: a public persona, a private persona and a personal persona.

Public is strait forward it’s the face/mask/personality one has in public with strangers, acquaintances, and some work colleagues.

Private is your personality with very close friends and family. Things you would not do or say in public but would around your close circle.

Personal is the inner you that you share with no one. Your inner thoughts, your conscience, your inner voice and inner monologue.

This is generally by a spectrum that blend into one another and change over time rather than three separate buckets. As you get older and more aware of these different perspectives some people act more like they are buckets not a spectrum. These people seem much more fake especially if you ever see their public and private personas. You may have just seen this for the first time.

dmention7,

You touched on something that makes sense, but for me personally it takes more than just having different public vs private personas for a person to seem fake.

Many people naturally have a different demeanor or way of interacting in public than private, which doesn’t necessarily make them seem fake. What feels fake is when you can pick up on a deliberate or curated public persona, especially if it’s being done deceptively or for some material gain.

Varyk, in If another species on Earth began to develop civilization, how would you like to see them approached?

“Hey there. Do you want help? It might destroy everything.”

Let them choose. Respect their decision.

GutterPunch, in If another species on Earth began to develop civilization, how would you like to see them approached?

Depends on the size of the species. If they are smaller than the average human, most definitely approach them onto a grill and eat them. If they are larger, that approach is still viable, but their size may be difficult if they are similar in scale to mammoths but have opposable thumbs.

Alternatively, it may be insightful to consider the precedents for this. Leprechauns have lived in civilized secrecy for thousands of years, and gnomes have been documented performing organized crime or acts of violence. Regardless of whether humans are related to either, they would be a distinct species from homo sapiens. It may be the case that for any species on Earth that develops civilization, it ensures approach doesn’t happen.

PrincessLeiasCat,

Why decide already to eat them? Grill them, sure, if they’re a threat, but what if they’re poisonous or just smell/taste like vomit after a night of slamming beers?

GutterPunch,

And let them organize their civilized society enough to the point where they arrange to cook and eat me, explaining to me as I am grilled on the barbie that human rights aren’t real because the only species with established civilized rights is theirs? Eat first and ask questions later

PrincessLeiasCat,

I have to respect your commitment.
