squiblet, in Why is this sub so against jokes and more lighthearted posts?
@squiblet@kbin.social avatar

The joke or reply-bait (like dallo describes!) posts aren’t great content. Looking over the community it’s mainly moderately serious topics that do make for decent conversation… I don’t see anything about Linux (?) so I assume that’s just your stereotype for Lemmy.

Presi300,
@Presi300@lemmy.world avatar

It’s not really a stereotype, and idm it personally (I do like Linux), it just looks like most posts that aren’t either serious or talking about Linux here just get downvoted to hell

squiblet,
@squiblet@kbin.social avatar

Stereotypes can be accurate. Anyway, I don't know how you're viewing or sorting the community, but your post is the only one on the first page that even mentions Linux.

Deceptichum,
@Deceptichum@kbin.social avatar

I think they’re asking why all of Lemmy doesn’t like jokes, not specifically the asklemmy community.

squiblet,
@squiblet@kbin.social avatar

The title says “this sub”.

simple, in Does anyone else resent the links to Reddit?

Block the bots making those posts, there are only around 3 or so that keep spamming. Your feed will feel a lot better after.

Lophostemon,

Good idea!

otter,

Another great thing about Lemmy is that people can choose what they want to see instead of a platform deciding for them.

If you don’t like the bots, block them. If someone wants the bots, they can subscribe to the communities.

It’s really only a problem when someone is making too many separate bots that it gets hard to block all of them

whaleross,
@whaleross@lemmy.world avatar

It is also a problem if it is not obvious that it is bot generated content and another if it floods actual user generated content.

Lophostemon,

The ‘All’ feed could be considered a blessing or a curse.

Nevermind the bots.

If a [insert random community] post pops up and I comment on it then they get shitty and say “well why did you come in here to this niche subject and post?”

I think… “If it’s delivered to me in the ‘All’ feed then it’s fair game to post in.”

If people don’t want ‘outsiders’ in their “safe space” then perhaps some communities shouldn’t have their feeds set to shout their content to the whole Fediverse.

bizzle,
@bizzle@lemmy.world avatar

More like the “Literally Just Memes” feed

grue,

In general, individuals blocking other users for [insert toxic misbehavior] is bad. The problem isn’t that one user in particular is seeing it; the problem is that it exists at all and erodes the quality of the whole network.

Take trolling, for instance: if you just block the troll, all you’re doing is giving them carte-blanche to keep spreading misinformation/shit-talking you/whatever without you knowing about it. Everybody else can still see it, though, which means they could still be doing damage to your reputation and you’d just appear to acquiesce to it.

People engaging in bad behavior need to be banned by the mods, not just blocked by individual users.

brbposting,

Yeah & you could recommend Lemmy to friends who might ask you about all the nazis or whatever who became popular overnight without you seeing them.

If your mental health can’t take it you get a free pass for sure :)

MonkderZweite,

Which ones?

TheWaterGod,
@TheWaterGod@lemmy.ca avatar

Not the OP, but I’ve got the following bots blocked and it massively improved my Lemmy experience.

  • TushyBot@booty.world
  • bot@lemmit.online
  • linkbot@lemmy.link
  • video_feed_bot
  • bOt@zerobytes.monster
  • rlululemon@lululemmy.com
MonkderZweite,

Thanks!

MajorHavoc,

Yeah, I was gonna say “there’s links to reddit?!”. I blocked those so long ago I had forgotten about it.

whaleross,
@whaleross@lemmy.world avatar

Agreed that blocking is useful, but the default shouldn’t be having to jump through hoops to make the fediverse usable, especially for new users.

I’d suggest the mirrors of other social media be delegated to their own instance that clearly states that it is a bot-run Reddit or whatever mirror and other instances don’t show them by default.

Those that want the mirrored no engagement content can subscribe to those on those particular instances and nobody needs to have a problem.

osarusan,
@osarusan@kbin.social avatar

Liberal use of the block feature has made the Fediverse so much more pleasant. I can't recommend it enough!

aaaa, (edited )

This is why I don’t think the Lemmy platforms will really grow to Reddit size until we solve this problem. Most folks don’t want to curate their own feed when they first explore a social media platform. That usually comes later after they’ve been drawn in.

What Lemmy and kbin could really use is a set of default subscriptions that are curated by instance admins to provide the best new user experience.

For that matter, default block lists wouldn’t be so bad either

osarusan,
@osarusan@kbin.social avatar

That's true. It would be cool if we could "subscribe" to a curated block list, sort of like we do with AdBlock plugins.

Oha, in Why is there no community devoted to vinly preservation?

Be the change you wanna see

RiddleMeeWhy, in Does anyone else resent the links to Reddit?

Yes, so much “auto archive” spam. What are you archiving? A link? Because there isn’t any actual content there. As an aside, jerboa has an option to block bot accounts, so that’s what I’ve been doing now

lorez, (edited ) in What is your unpopular flim opinion

Dune is complete crap from the soundtrack to the script. The characters are as thick as cardboard and their interactions motivate nothing. It’s full of slow motion nonsense, flying metal dragonflies and Zimmer’s horns. These days filmmakers are convinced visuals make storytelling. They don’t. Dialogue does and here there’s not a single line I remember.

ours,

OP asked for unpopular opinions and you’ve delivered.

Upvoted you because of that and not because I agree with you (I strongly disagree as a matter of fact).

lorez,

The majority likes that movie. I guess more power to you.

Welt,

I liked lorez’s comments because he explained the reasoning and stood by his opinion. Children don’t understand a one-star review doesn’t on its own communicate anything other than the uncontrolled emotion of the viewer which has nothing to do with the film.

NotPersonal,

Not trying to convince you otherwise. But movies are audiovisual media. It’s right there in the name. So they visuals and the audio are a big thing for that medium. Radio theater had no visuals, but they used sound desing to elevate the medium. Books have no audio nor visuals, so they focus on delivering a great story with great dialogue.

Every medium has its strengths and weaknesses and every work within those mediums should focus on them. If there’s ever a movie that is 5hs long with an amazing story and superb dialogue… then it should’ve been a book.

My point is that it’s ok not to like it. But the idea that a movie should have “good dialogue” is a bit misunderstanding what movies are and what the medium is. You can have a good movie with little to no dialogue or a very very basic story.

lorez, (edited )

While I totally agree that audio and visuals are very important to a motion picture, they are not their fulcrum. Motion pictures, like books and theater before em, narrate stories and there’s no better way to describe the actors of said stories than with dialogue. The things said, the tone, that’s what brings characters to life, that’s what I remember and quote. Without them I care for no story cos I relate to no one. I much prefer a well written piece to some visual effects demo reel, that nowadays is easier to make and while I utterly adore Zimmer 's music, in this case I remember no motif, nothing other than blaring horns, sign that even him was not inspired by the movie.

Chastity2323,

So true, I watched dune in theaters with my friends and half of us fell asleep lmao

vanveen, (edited ) in why is it so difficult select text from posts?

🤦‍♂️ Ok, I expected to create this mini chaos. I am not particulary acute, but I normally tend to figure out, while using a client, how to select and copy the a portion of text. In this case, before posting, I’ve tried some of the most obvious and intuitive solutions without any results, the only ones I’ve obtained where cumbersome and unsatisfaying.
I did not know existed so many app/clients for Lemmy. I’ve just tried 2 and this one, Voyager, is, I repeat, graphically very rich and beautiful, if compared with the previous and, also with Reddit is fun (the reddit client I used until it was shut down following that rascal Reddit did to the creator of RIF). I want to support Voyager because is by far the most beautiful app I’ve used among those said clients.
I’m sure there must be a most practical and elegant to selct and copy the text, I’ll find out and I’ll let you know, thanks for all your answer and the desire to help!

EmergMemeHologram, in Does anyone else resent the links to Reddit?

yamanii, in What is your unpopular flim opinion
@yamanii@lemmy.world avatar

Cloud Atlas was good if you paid attention, didn’t notice the face cgi in theaters.

ElPussyKangaroo,

I was under the impression that this thread was for unpopular opinions… 😐

I thought people thought it was a philosophical masterpiece. And I thought it was garbage. I understood fuckall. And I was watching it at my peak time during the day on the appropriate amount of caffeine to stimulate my brain. Nothing.

I may be dumb. Maybe. But I didn’t understand shit, that’s for sure.

fireweed,

There’s a fan recut that takes all the time skip scenes and puts them in chronological order that’s much more straightforward. Personally I can’t imagine watching it that way, but I also refuse to acknowledge The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya except in broadcast order. There’s definitely a large contingent that prefer both these media in chronological order though, so you’re not alone.

ElPussyKangaroo,

I think you’ve replied to the wrong comment, mate.

Funnily enough, I have spoken about Haruhi quite a bit 😂.

fireweed,

My comment was referring to Cloud Atlas while comparing it to Haruhi as another piece of media with dramatic (and controversial) time skips.

ElPussyKangaroo,

Ohhhhh. Makes sense.

I’ve watched Haruhi as well 😂. I have a whole rant on the Haruhi community… Here 😂.

fireweed,

As someone who watched Haruhi back when it was originally broadcast, it’s amazing that people are still discussing the series seventeen years later. In an era when an anime’s impact seems to only last a single season before the fandom moves on, this is especially impressive. Haruhi deserves to stick around, if for no other reason than its historic value; it’s difficult to describe to younger fans just what an impact the anime made on the scene when it dropped.

ElPussyKangaroo,

I feel the same way about so many shows. They’re truly gems and the world is missing out.

finthechat,
@finthechat@kbin.social avatar

Broadcast order is the true way. Chrono is for people who don't have an attention span.

Welt,

Really? Will have to give it another chance

quams69, (edited )

The weird part for me is that they did cgi for a face feature that exists in humans already; when it came out me and my friends joked that the lead, with cgi, looks exactly like him. It’s so strange.

roofuskit,
@roofuskit@lemmy.world avatar

The Wachowskis have made exactly one good movie. And it’s not Cloud Atlas.

Ensign_Crab, (edited ) in What is your unpopular flim opinion

Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is a cyberpunk movie.

Mars is a dystopian, broken society in which cyberware is so ubiquitous that we only ever see one Martian without visible augmentation. Every character in the movie does what they do for purely selfish reasons, with the exception of the idiot Droppo, the old man Chochem who remembers society for what it was before it went to hell, and the mythological embodiment of generosity himself. When Chochem suggests that Mars needs a Santa Claus, the immediate response isn’t to research and emulate St. Nick, nope. Martian society is so degenerate that the first idea is to commit a crime: to kidnap the jolly old elf. And all of Earth’s governments are incapable of stopping them.

Cyberware, broken society, selfish characters, rampant crime, laughably inadequate government? What genre does that sound like?

When I pointed out that Santa Claus Conquers the Martians predates Blade Runner, the film that most people consider to be the first cyberpunk movie, by some 18 years, at a tabletop session of Cyberpunk 2020, I was less than popular with those assembled.

I decided to not press my luck by pointing out that it came out 4 years before the book Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep.

Hooray for Santy Claus.

Shyfer,

Never even heard of this movie, but I’m convinced.

vanveen, in why is it so difficult select text from posts?

I checked on f-droid and Google play and I could not find Avelon

Yes, but how about the artists that pressed their recordings only on vinyl? There are scores of artists that may have only made a couple thousand records and will be lost to time without people saving them.

AnneBonny, in Why is there no community devoted to vinly preservation?

There is a project for recording 78s, but they are mostly shellac, not vinyl.

HollandJim,

Well, as they’re both analog, why not? Why not add cylinders while we’re at it?

Rivalarrival, in What could my upstairs neighbor possibly be doing to make this much noise?

Down the road from me is “Top Floor Gymnastics and Dance Center”.

I’m pretty sure the building they operate out of has commercial space on the ground floor and one or two floors of apartments under the gymnastic center.

NightAuthor,

That sounds wildly unpleasant, unless they had some amazing soundproofing

Rivalarrival,

The building they are in predates WWII, so definitely not.

smashin, in What is your unpopular flim opinion

Not sure if this counts as unpopular. But man Hollywood really butchered Godzilla and many other iconic movie monsters. Why the hell is Godzilla some kind of anti-hero and don’t get me started on the cast.

TotallynotJessica,
@TotallynotJessica@lemmy.world avatar

That’s what most Japanese Godzilla movies are like if we’re being honest. If you’ve only seen the original, I get why you might think Godzilla is usually a villain, but even the direct sequel had him fight another, more evil monster. Let’s be real, the human characters in most of those sequels were awful and boring. Those movies exist mostly for the monster fights.

If you’re unaware, just look up Godzilla’s dropkick to understand what I’m talking about. That scene might be the pinnacle of the silliness, but it was by no means an outlier.

Compared to the goofy trash that encompasses 90% of Godzilla movies, the 2019 Godzilla movie where Godzilla goes super saiyan was one of the best Godzilla films ever made. Big fights, badass moments, and human characters that exist to compliment the monsters. The original Gojira, Godzilla Minus One, and even Shin Godzilla aren’t comparable to or representative of most Godzilla movies.

smashin,

I think the subtle difference between Hollywood and Japanese cinema is that Hollywood is literally applying the Avengers formula but on monsters. And that really ruined it for me.

TotallynotJessica,
@TotallynotJessica@lemmy.world avatar

As someone who grew up with the goofy Toho movies, I felt like the Americans used that formula more than the Avengers formula.

The human characters have little control over the monsters, relying on Godzilla or Kong to win fights and only being able to help them do what they already wanted to do. That’s fairly in line with what the Japanese movies did.

Marvel movies have more quipy heroes with emotional backstories who rise to the occasion and save the world. There are some comedic human characters, but they’re sidekicks to the monsters and aren’t self aware like in Marvel movies. The monsters sometimes do silly things, but they don’t quip and aren’t sarcastic because they can’t talk. There’s tragedy in them being the last of their kind, but that’s never the focus.

I really think the Monsterverse has carried on the legacy of Japanese monster mashes fairly well. They’ve actually been on the better end of the spectrum.

DeepGradientAscent,
@DeepGradientAscent@programming.dev avatar

You don’t need the “literally”.

ours,

Japanese Godzilla has been villain and anti-hero depending on the movie.

MrPoopbutt,

Godzilla minus one might be the best Godzilla movie to date. But, to your point, it wasn’t made by Hollywood.

In the monsterverse Godzilla movies, I have found myself not caring at all about the human characters.

ElPussyKangaroo,

Godzilla Minus One seems to be the saving grace for this…

Also, Japanese movies also made him a hero of sorts in some movies so… I’m not too sure about anything anymore.
