zeppo, in What is your best story when you were in a foreign country?
@zeppo@lemmy.world avatar

My family went to Tijuana when I was about 5. My brother and I saw an unconscious/dead person being dragged into an alley and were ‘wtf?’. My parents just said uh, nevermind about that.

CADmonkey, in What groups you are unwillingly associated with? How you handle it?

I’m a large, unpleasant looking man living in a red state who has a pickup truck, and a harley. I’m married to a methodist lay speaker. I have a few firearms.

So naturally I must be the biggest trump supporting, red-hat wearing, religious conservative twatwaffle in existence, there is no other option.

As a result, the actual redhat cockwombles I work with think I’m going to be OK with their racist comments, and are shocked when I’m not. The thing that helps me with these guys is the fact that they are having to work from prints that have my initials on them so they can whine about the LiBuRl all they want, and I’ll still be helping them get their jobs done.

The traits they are assuming make me One of Them™ are just incidental things. I have a battered old truck because my wife and I have either a large garden or a small farm, depending on how you look at it. A Honda Civic won’t carry the stuff I need. (Neither will a van) I have a harley because the local motorcycle dealers are pretty terrible tp deal with, but the harley dealer is nice, helpful, and act like they want to sell a bike. I’m large and unpleasant because of genetics. And I have firearms because for most of my adult life I have lived somewhere that has an hour’s response time for law enforcement, and I’ve had to defend myself in the past. None of these things made me hate any particular group of people.

someguy3,

How big is your garden/farm?

Kase,

Pretty big. Or pretty small, depends on how you look at it. /s

someguy3,

If only we had measurements.

Kase,

He’s American tho. We don’t use those here.

ShittyBeatlesFCPres,

1 megaparsec^2 / α*137 rounded to the nearest farm.

lingh0e,

“Methodist lay speaker”?

TwanHE, in What is your best story when you were in a foreign country?

I was out camping in Slovenia with the scouts. We stayed in podljubelj and met an older guy (friend our campground owner, important for later) that did tours through the redstone mines and abandoned buildings in the mountains. The tour was to take 3 hours and it cost €15 cash only, so we did a quick calculation of how much we needed and got it from the atm just before the tour started.

We had a great time and got some cool memories climbing down a abandoned mineshafts and lifts while this guy was terrified for our lives😅 So the tour concludes and we go to pay him, and he almost fell over backwards when we handed him €200 which was the price we calculated + a small tip.

Turns out the €15 wasn’t per person but instead a flat rate no matter the group size. Fucking €15 for guiding a group of 12 idiots for 3 hours.

We ended up having intense negotiations with the guy for how much he was willing to take. In the end we managed to convince him to take €100 from us and we ended up giving the other €100 to our campground owner who would make sure his stubborn friend didn’t turn down “free” money.

I still can’t believe that tour was meant to be just €15

TwinTusks,
@TwinTusks@bitforged.space avatar

Lets convert. Currently Euro to CNY (Chinese) is 7.78.

€15 for 3 hours is 116.7CNY, that is 38 CNY/hour, that is mighty high even in China today where the average salary is about 3-4K CNY.

agissilver,

They were in Slovenia, not china?

TwinTusks,
@TwinTusks@bitforged.space avatar

I know, I’m just providing a example to show the disparency between economic of two different countries, where as for one person the amount is minimal while for the other is significant.

(Solvenia also uses Euro, so I don’t know whats going on over there)

Persen,

Yep Slovenia is cheap unless you live here.

Crack0n7uesday, (edited ) in Which YouTuber still creates high-quality videos to this day?

Wendigoon, he doesn’t post as frequently as a lot of others but his videos are like an hour long and he researches the fuck out of a subject. He did one about the unabomber recently that he had to break into a two partner because one part was just an hour long interview with the lead FBI investigator on the case.

ZeFrank

GhostsAreShitty,

I don’t think I’ll ever connect with his YouTube stuff like I did with his pre-YouTube The Show. But he’s consistently churning out great stuff.

Good Mythical Morning has been around since before YouTube even existed and they still put out good shit. Even more so, with the GM Kitchen stuff (which I actually like more; those guys are fun as hell).

nomous,

I loved GMM until every episode became a food episode. I’m trying to watch what I eat and every episode being a food tier-list or guess-where-the-food-is-from really turned me off.

I still like the guys and their staff. I listen to Ear Biscuits and catch the longer-form stuff they’re experimenting with but I no longer watch GMM/GMMore daily.

a9249, in Which YouTuber still creates high-quality videos to this day?

Tom Scott. Only gotten better with time.

cerulean_blue,

Amen. Shame he’s jacking it in. But he has been going non-stop for like 10 years

a9249,

Youtube viewership has been quickly declining in the past year… hes just running out the clock.

He posts infrequently but Sean Hodgins videos keep getting better. Don’t let the thumbnails fool you, he puts a ton of work into them. It’s hard to describe, it’s mostly him showing off his projects but they have an analogue/80s cyberpunk feel in the way he tells his story, the music that’s played, and how he edits the videos together.

Gallardo994, in Which YouTuber still creates high-quality videos to this day?

Karl Jobst for sure.

Pratai, in What groups you are unwillingly associated with? How you handle it?

None. I have self-respect. For example. My own MAGA worshipping Trump-humping father demanded that I apologize for telling him that America sucks (in regards to healthcare). I was told to either apologize or to never talk again.

I said we’d never talk again. And we haven’t.

Super tempted to ask for one if one isn’t offered lol

SzethFriendOfNimi,
@SzethFriendOfNimi@lemmy.world avatar

Don’t take random people’s advice at face value. You know your circumstances best.

That being said:

“I’ve done the following this year and feel my work meets or exceeds expectations. That being said cost of living has been going up quite a bit and I would like to discuss how my pay can reflect this”

Or

“What steps do you think I should take to advance my career here? What’s the best path forward to taking on more responsibility and the commensurate compensation?”

And, if you’d rather just ask in general how things are going

“I feel this and this has been going great. Are there any areas you feel I do best in? Any areas that I should work on refining?”

And if the last question doesn’t have anything then that may be a good time to ask about pay. Just the COL alone is reason enough because there’s always the option of finding a new job whose starting pay is what you want.

@agent_flounder@lemmy.world avatar

Also, what’s the plan to correct salaries for higher than normal inflation over the last several quarters?

(Or maybe that would get you fired idk)

Dave, in What are some good questions to ask your boss during your yearly review?
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

If you’re on the path to level 2, ask what you need to get there.

If you can get specific feedback then you can work on those things, and it also shows your boss that it’s your goal so they can help you work towards it.

LaunchesKayaks,
@LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world avatar

I know that I have to get a specific Microsoft cert to get discussions on a promotion started. I attempted the cert exam and failed pretty badly. Gotta study more.

I plan on asking for specific feedback and how I can improve and all that.

Dave,
@Dave@lemmy.nz avatar

Would it be helpful to ask for suggestions on getting better at the exam stuff, or do you already have what you need and just need to put in the study time?

LaunchesKayaks,
@LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world avatar

I have loads of resources, so I just need to study.

shalafi,

Any chance of getting hands-on experience? Spin up some VMs to play with?

LaunchesKayaks,
@LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world avatar

I could look into that. I got a udemy course on sale that has simulations and stuff. If those don’t cover what I am struggling with, I can totally see if we can spin up some temporary vms

shalafi, (edited )

Don’t have any MS certs myself, but the conventional wisdom is this: Answer how you think Microsoft wants you to answer. If there are two correct answers, go the Microsoft way.

I know that’s a little nebulous at your experience level. Wish I had some examples, been a few years since I looked at it.

Hereforpron2, in What are some good questions to ask your boss during your yearly review?

Ask what the most important skills or experiences to develop are for the transition to level 2, if there are any new or unexpected needs emerging in the department, if there are any specific departmental or company-wife priorities or goals for the coming year, and if there’s any way your specific role can more actively support those goals.

Depending on the type of place, you can ask if you’re perceived as taking feedback well and/or being up for a challenge, saying that you want that to be clear and would like to work on it if it isn’t. The fine line is asking a question that seems like it’s just meant to make you look good vs. a legitimate request for somewhere you can grow or do more good for the team/company, which is why keeping things focused on questions that will have actionable responses is a great move. Hope this helps and good luck! Sounds like you don’t have much to be worried about if they’re already prepping you for a promotion!
