I agree with the insight that a lot of news has a really negative focus. That is, a lot of things like murders or disasters or the like that don’t really have all that much direct impact on the lives of most people are very mediagenic, so get disproportionately-heavy coverage. We wind up with a really skewed-negative perspective in the news media relative to reality.

However, I also have to say that I wasn’t necessarily blown away by some past efforts I’ve seen along the lines of remedying this either – that is, a lot of feel-good stories aren’t necessarily all that important to someone’s life either. Not to say that someone can’t want and consume feel-good stories either, but if one’s goal is to try to pick up useful information, probably what one would best read is neither material about shark attacks, nor about someone who overcame cancer or whatnot.

RBWells, in Do you have a story about when you saw snow for the first time?

I’ve first seen snow twice.

The first time, I was 7 and it snowed overnight in Florida (a little). I saw it and ran in to wake my mom up but she kept saying “it’s frost, go back to bed”. She also made me go to school and the only other kids in my class were 2 kids from Michigan.

I was 20 when I first saw snow falling from the sky. Was in England, looked out the window and panicked because I thought there was ash falling from the sky. Asked what was burning and my boyfriend (Scottish) said “That’s snooo, lass”.

I think we’re ignoring the bigger question: what kinda music DOESN"T have drums? like, literally EVERY FORM OF MUSIC uses drums, or some machine playing back a drum beat.

So barber shop is the lord’s music then. Hmmm

Pea666,

Classical music doesn’t necessarily have drums. It might have some percussion but they’re not as prominent as with a lot of pop music.

pythonoob,

Church hymns

ThatFembyWho,

Ambient and some styles of classical music come to mind.

chitak166,

Umm, no.

Lots and lots and lots and lots (repeat ad infinitum) of music has no drums.

OmgItBurns,

I’d say that most forms of music have some kind of rhythm instrument, often those are some form of percussion instrument.

I’ve definitely heard some experimental stuff that didn’t use any form of rhythm instruments. Then again, you can just record the ambient sound of a city and call that music, so to each their own.

tenacious_mucus, (edited ) in Is there an app or way to set a start time and end time and totally simulate an automatic sunset with Hue lighting

Pretty sure that exact feature is built into the native Hue app, as long as you have the bulbs that support those kinds of colors. I see it when i try to make a “wake up” automation, i’d have to look again to see if there is an opposite for sunset. You can automate bedtime or go to sleep automations, and schedule them for sunset/sunrise or specific times.

Edit- just quickly looked through the app- there IS a sunrise for a wakeup automation, but not seeing any default sunset types. Might have to create your own by fading through some other sunset colors while dimming. Which is done basically like you are sayin; pick a color and and start time, then another color at another start time, etc. you can set whether to snap to these colors or fade to them over a period of time which also picking brightness. BUT- this is just in the native Hue app, i dont know about other Hue compatible apps.

RememberTheApollo_, in What groups you are unwillingly associated with? How you handle it?

Gun ownership.

I really enjoy the sport of shooting. I don’t hunt. I don’t have a problem with people hunting so long as they eat what they shoot, hunt responsibly, and trophy hunters can get fucked. I like guns. I also think that people should have access to them.

That immediately seems to lump me in with the psychotic idiocy popularized by gun owners today. I despise those people. I have incredibly strong opinions about who should have access to guns, how guns should be stored, and how gun ownership should be licensed, insured, and actually monitored. The way the second amendment has been so woefully and foolishly written as to be vague and completely anachronistic by today’s standards it is doing far more damage than good, and the people that claim it’s to protect themselves from government are the very authoritarians trying to overthrow it.

So yeah, it sucks to want to participate in a sport full of asinine wingnuts or be associated with them. So I keep my mouth shut about owning guns.

Yeah, today when playing my favourite (pirate themed) Christmas album for the first time this year, I noticed that it’s already the 20th…

Gona need you drop a link to this pirate christmas music

tal, (edited ) in When will video support be added to Lemmy?
@tal@lemmy.today avatar

You can link to videos if you want. I don’t think that lemmy or kbin instances will likely provide free hosting for them, though.

There is a Fediverse service that provides video hosting, PeerTube.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PeerTube

I’m skeptical that it will scale – it costs to host video – but it’s there. You can host something on any PeerTube host willing to serve your content and link to it from the Threadiverse, same as you could on YouTube.

joinpeertube.org

EDIT: For a list of nearby instances:

peertube.fediverse.observer

Valmond, (edited )

For the scaling, isn’t that mostly for those high availability / high demand content creators?

I mean, for me, Lemmy is a place where you interact, create, discuss. Not a platform where a select few have millions of “followers”?

So I think that bandwidth cost can be not that high for “enthusiast” servers.

Also, say you post a crazy viral video on my poor server, well people could(I know it doesn’t work that way automatically today) re-post it elsewhere because they like it and see that it’s just not available on my lil server because the hug of death.

Maybe information wants to be free, and if we share things on the internet, we shouldn’t think we had a right to control it any more. I mean is there a law against to create something being inspired by something else?

A bit like when you say something interesting to someone, and they repeat it to their friends, and they do the same and so on.

Sorry about the rant, it’s just a rant, not anything against you!, thanks for the information you provide.

I’ll try hosting video on my ~700Mb up line (IIRC) to see how it works if I get the howtos.

Cheers Lemmings :-)

It looks like that if you set up a lemmy instance, there’s an upload size cap for things that people can attach.

github.com/LemmyNet/lemmy/issues/3349

If you set that to some insane number, I imagine that people can upload large stuff, and as I note below, at least webm files seem to be doable right now on lemmy.world (just that the lemmy.world size cap is going to keep someone from uploading anything of meaningful size). I’d imagine that if you lift that cap to whatever you want – if you want full-length movies, then probably a couple of gigabytes – the users of your instance should be able to upload. They’d click on “image” rather than “movie”, but…shrugs

The Lemmy Web UI isn’t really designed for huge uploads, doesn’t show a progress bar, so it’s probably not going to provide the best user experience, but I’d expect that it’ll work.

If you don’t want to run a lemmy instance, but do want to permit people to just anonymously upload files that they can link to on other lemmy instances, then while I don’t have a particular example ready to hand, I’m sure that there are no shortage of web-based “dropbox” systems that let one upload and then serve files. Just have people reference the file’s URL the way they would anything else.

If you want to run a PeerTube instance, which is aimed at fediverse video sharing, then I’d look at their docs. I’ve never set one up, but I’m sure that they have some kind of documentation.

Slow,

I would like to add that we are talking primarily about the ability to insert a direct link with a video located on a third-party service. To do this, you need to display previews/thumbnails, which are not available now.

I may be wrong, but I don’t think it will require a lot of additional resources.

@CaptainBlagbird@lemmy.world avatar

If you’re not afraid of some doing some configurations, then you might want to check out Home Assistant. I got completely rid of my Hue bridge and am using a Raspberry Pi with HA and a ZigBee Dongle instead (there are also other setup options, and you can also still use your Hue bridge instead of a Dongle to control the lights). Wouldn’t go back, it’s so much more versatile and cleaner to use.

Then find a blueprint (e.g. like this one), or create an automation from scratch for your individual needs.

LetterboxPancake,

I have one old Philips whatever they were called lamps that I can’t connect to home assistant. The rest I moved away from the bridge. I think I’ll just let go of that lamp.

sramder, in Is there an app or way to set a start time and end time and totally simulate an automatic sunset with Hue lighting
@sramder@lemmy.world avatar

iConnectHue has self adjusting sunset and sunrise timers… but it might have gone to a subscription model, in which case screw that.

And I could certainly set something like that up in home assistant.

It’s worth noting that all the Hue bulbs I own have a fairly high minimum brightness. Meaning they pop on at ~10-15% full brightness.

AnotherExist, in Is it just my circle, or has it been a challenge getting into the Christmas/holiday spirit the last couple of years?

Well for me yeah for years and I felt guilty not being happy and enjoying the holidays with my family. Covid unrelated. Antidepressants helped me enjoy it atleast a bit.

AnalogyAddict, in What is best left unfinished?

Cheesecake. Unfinished, there is more cheesecake to look forward to. Once it’s finished, there is no more cheesecake. Only sadness.

I rigged up a simulated sunrise about 20 years back with a regular light, a computer, and an X10 controller back when I slept in a room without windows and wanted a more-gentle way of waking up than an alarm clock. So I totally get wanting to simulate a sunrise.

But why do you want to simulate a sunset?

Also, you might want to ask on !homeautomation, as they specialize in this sort of thing.

cheese_greater,

Thanks for the recco, subscribed aha!

intensely_human, in What groups you are unwillingly associated with? How you handle it?

I’m unwillingly associated with Nazis often when I disagree with people online. I deal with it by going on with my day, since there’s nothing else I can do about it.
