Flaky, in What's your wider fediverse setup?
@Flaky@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

I have an iPad that I use Mona with. Fedi web clients tend to suck on iOS. On the desktop I use whatever default web client there is, or Elk in the case of Mastodon.

I don’t really use Lemmy enough to warrant using an app for it.

HeavyDogFeet,
@HeavyDogFeet@lemmy.world avatar

Ooh, I’d never heard of Elk before. Just checked it out and it’s really nice — might have to make it my web client now. Thank for sharing!

itsnicodegallo, in If You Had to Worship or be the Champion of an Ancient Greek God/Goddess Which One Would You Pick?

Helios. The personification of the Sun. One of the few Titans the Gods didn’t even bother trying to wrest power from, and he’s also the guardian of oaths and sight. He was so powerful that driving his chariot wrong could destroy the earth by freezing or burning it simply by driving too closely to or too far away from the ground.

A loving father too. In the most prominent myth that features Helios, his son Phaëthon (the umlaut just means to pronounce the E) made a pilgrimage all the way East to confirm that Helios was actually his father. Phaëthon was extremely brave, but also boastful, to the point that somebody finally said something along the lines of, “Oh, whatever! I bet the sun god isn’t even your real father.” Cause he was a mortal, even if your mother and sisters are nymphs, hearing that your dad was the fucking sun is still a bit of a stretch enough for Phaëthon to have some doubt.

Helios confirmed Phaëthon’s parentage, and to dispel any leftover doubt, made an oath to his son that he would grant him a favor as long as it was within his power. Unfortunately, Eos the dawn had just pulled up with Helios’ glorious, gold and silver chariot pulled by 4 flaming horses so dude could make his daily run. At that moment, Phaëthon decided on the favor. his son asked to drive his father’s chariot. Helios, being the god of oaths, begged his son to reconsider but ultimately had to keep the oath he swore.

Being a mortal who also had no idea how to drive the chariot of the sun, Phaëthon lost control. At some points, he went so high he was almost stung by the constellation Scorpio, and those places became irreversibly frozen into tundras. At some points, the chariot drew so close to the earth that some places turned into deserts. Zeus saw what was happening, and to protect the rest of the world, shot Phaëthon down with a lightning bolt.

Phaëthon’s body fell into the river Eridanos, and his sisters who went to find his body mourned so intensely that either as a mercy killing from the gods or because magical biology just kinda works this way in Greek mythology, they turned into poplar trees and their tears became amber.

BigBrainBrett2517,

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 Great read. I’ll have a link to more stories/legends like this please. Or a book recommendation?

TomAwsm,

I can wholeheartedly recommend Stephen Fry’s books on Greek Mythology (Mythos, Heroes and Troy).

BigBrainBrett2517,

Party time, Excellent! Reurreurreurreur! Definitely going to get that book. Thank you.

itsnicodegallo, (edited )

I wish I had a link, but I just wrote that on the fly when the coffee kicked in. It’s one of my favorite Greek myths, so I know it off the top of my head.

A really good book if you could get through all that would be Edith Hamilton’s Mythology. It’s a huge compilation of myths, primarily Greek with the tail end being Norse, and it’s a staple! Any library is bound to have it, but it’s well worth owning.

Just did a quick Google search, and a website called thriftbooks.com has it for as cheap as $3.59!!

EDIT: Also, thank you.

Off the top of your head, the way the information had been passed down for hundreds of years, love to see it!

BigBrainBrett2517,

That is super brill! I’ll be purchasing that for sure. Less than $4 is ridiculous - but I love in Aus so I’ll probably have to spend more than $20 for a really good book 😩😂 Also: Thank you!

PonyOfWar, in Is there an artist whose work you love but was a shitty person?

HP Lovecraft - great writer, horrible racist

Similarly, Orson Scott Card - Ender’s game and its sequel are great, but he’s a raging homophobe.

tal,
@tal@lemmy.today avatar

I mean, by present standards, most people historically would have been pretty racist.

PonyOfWar,

Indeed, though Lovecraft has the distinction of being pretty racist even for his time.

ThunderingJerboa,
@ThunderingJerboa@kbin.social avatar

He was certainly above that. Hell his story "Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family" also known as "White Ape". Is literally a book about the "one drop rule" to the point its actually funny because of how absurd it comes off as. Its so insanely racist, it fucking becomes funny based on the character's reaction. Its not a great short story but basically he find out his great great great great grandmother was a "white ape" (which is not human per say but lets read between the lines since the white apes come from the congo region), his response to this news was pouring gasoline on himself and burning himself alive. Like yes its fiction but the fact he made a fucking short story where the focal point is discovering that you are mixed race and learning that is so mind breaking, death was the only logical option is god damn hilarious.

Badabinski,

I'm convinced that Orson Scott Card suffered a traumatic head injury at some point. I don't know how you could go from writing something as beautiful and intimate as Ender's Game to shit like Hidden Empire, which is creepy right wing Christian disaster porn (from what I can remember of that trainwreck).

qantravon,

Yeah, I don’t know how the person who wrote “Speaker for the Dead” could be such a bigot. It doesn’t make sense to me.

Ender’s Shadow was an interesting book. Really made me appreciate Bean more than I did when I read Ender’s Game.

TheDoctorDonna, in Honestly - How much will you sacrifice for a better world?

If it was guaranteed to make the world better and not just some empty political promise, I would give up every luxury I could think of. The only thing I wouldn’t be willing to sacrifice are lives and human rights. If we needed to live in a tiny home with no internet, never eat out again and sew our clothes so that everyone is equal and has the same rights and comforts, I’m in. It would suck, but we’d survive and learn how to be content in knowing that no one is suffering for our greed anymore.

Cruxifux, in Is there an artist whose work you love but was a shitty person?

I’m really sad that Max Landis is a piece of shit because now we don’t get to see Dirk Gently season 3.

bionicjoey,

I assumed it was because of how poorly written Season 2 was…

I say this as someone who likes Season 2. Bart, Dirk, Amanda, and Farah are all terribly underutilized in S2

Cruxifux,

I loved season 2

bionicjoey,

Alan Tudyk is awesome in it. And I really like Ken’s arc. I just wish Dirk didn’t spend literally the whole season complaining about how dangerous he is. It’s such a tone shift from the first season.

Back in the day I used to love many of the fantasy novels by David Eddings (e.g. Belgariad, Mallorean) but after learning about the terrible child abuse he and his wife were prosecuted for, I can’t look at them the same way.

jpreston2005, (edited ) in Honestly - How much will you sacrifice for a better world?

Honest answer, I cut my meat consumption to a few splurge meals a year. I have been working from home so I drive very little (granted I didn’t opt for WFH just for carbon emission reduction). I compost, and recycle EVERYTHING I can. that means cleaning out every recyclable container and make sure to note what my county recycles vs. throws away. I buy the vast majority of my stuff second hand, I’m always looking for something that’s slightly broken so I can fix it for a steal. I don’t plan on having children so that’s a plus, and I also vote for progressives that are fighting for tougher climate control standards.

All-in-all it’s not a whole lot, but I’m just one of millions of struggling americans just trying to get their basic needs met while navigating this complex, shitty oligarchy I inherited from my parents.

IcyRain, in Is there an artist whose work you love but was a shitty person?

MCA Chris Avellone, turned out to be a sex pest or something, kind of broke my heart a bit with that.

loobkoob,
@loobkoob@kbin.social avatar

That one appears to have turned out to not be the case, fortunately. He wrote up a very long post with a lot of receipts (which is worth a read). He filed a libel suit against his two accusers, which ended up being settled out of court with a large payout in his favour and with the accusers retracting their accusations, categorically saying he had never sexually abused either of them (or any other women to their knowledge).

It was satisfactory enough for me, personally.

Tom Cruise. I don’t know what weird pathways cross in a brain to get that deep into Scientology without realizing what bullshit it is, but he is an amazing actor. He understands the craft, he is not shy about poking fun of himself, and by all accounts he is a consummate professional and treats the film crew well and has given gifts/thrown parties for them, etc.

But Scientology, yeesh…

RBWells,

I want to hate him so badly. But he is so good. I remember when he was cast as the vampire and I was pissed, having read the books it made no sense that Mr. Top Gun Fast Times at Ridgemont High as an undead vampire.

Saw the movie and had to eat my words, he had become a gaunt undead vampire. What the actual fuck. He was fantastic. Ever since that, I kind of trust he will be good in anything.

Num10ck,

wait Tom Cruise wasnt even in Fast Times??

AngryishHumanoid,

See how he just disappears into the role? We never even knew he was IN it!

RBWells,

Oh God you are right I am just conflating all those movies I avoided so successfully. I just mean until then he played characters so straight and gung ho and active and shiny. No way I could have cast him, whoever did saw something that nobody else did and they were right.

I still want to hate him. But do think he’s a gifted actor.

Cano,

Nah, but it’s just a really convenient joke opportunity. I’m surprised no one mentioned it

BruceTwarzen,

Which of his paintings do you enjoy the most?

Cano,

Gonna be honest, I did not see anyone of his paintings

deegeese,

Dude couldn’t even get into art school. Much more promising as an author.

londos, in Honestly - How much will you sacrifice for a better world?

I think people are willing to sacrifice more than even they would expect, but no one wants to be the only one sacrificing, especially if it puts them at a disadvantage compared to others. But collectively, if people sacrificed together, it could even become a point of pride. It’s why countries develop strong solidarity in times of war.
