jws_shadotak, in What's a proper response to another dog attempting to mount your dog multiple times and the owner really not doing anything about it?

Hold their dog’s collar and don’t let go until the owner gets the hint. Just hold their dog in place. It’s not hurting the animal but it’s also not something the owner can just ignore.

The discography of this guy.

If you’ve ever played Incredibox, you most likely know him as the composer of that game’s music.

IgnisAvem, in Is it just my circle, or has it been a challenge getting into the Christmas/holiday spirit the last couple of years?
@IgnisAvem@reddthat.com avatar

This year has been bad in my area. The cost of living crisis, lots of illness sweeping through, general stress, it’s all meant that no one has really had the Christmas spirit this year. And I’m not talking gifts or anything like that. I’m talking about having hot chocolate, wearing pjs, admiring other people’s decorations.

We’ve all commented that we haven’t been feeling it, and no one can pinpoint why exactly, but I think there’s just too many bad/stressful things going on for people to have the emotional resources left to be positive

meco03211, in What's a proper response to another dog attempting to mount your dog multiple times and the owner really not doing anything about it?

If at least one of them is fixed, at worst it’s just a show of dominance. The bigger concern is for the dog humping. Those shows of dominance can lead to aggressive reactions from some dogs. If your dog isn’t the type to react aggressively, it’s not a big problem outside of any social awkwardness. The problem would be if that dog humped another that really didn’t want it. Then there could be a fight. So it’s in the owners best interest to discourage that behavior lest they hump the wrong dog.

All that said, even if your dog isn’t the type to react and you just don’t want another dog humping your dog, you should be fine taking some action. Either avoid the other dog or if that’s not possible keep between your dog and the humper. Even physically holding the other dog away from yours should be fine. If the other owner takes offense to this, you can explain that you don’t want their dog humping yours. At this point, they’ll either concede and try to do better, remove their dog from the situation, or devolve into full Karen. Up to you how to handle that.

Devi, in What's a proper response to another dog attempting to mount your dog multiple times and the owner really not doing anything about it?

Lot's of comments about dominance. This is an old erronous theory about dog behaviour based on a botched study. Dogs hump for many reasons, sexual is the obvious one, but also being nervous or poorly socialised.

What you should do is stop the behaviour, move your dog or theirs away and tell the owner to come get their dog.

If it happens in certain scenarios you can also stop it before the behaviour, so a common scenario is two dogs are playing, one dog gets overstimulated and then jumps on to hump, in that scenario you'd want to watch for earlier signs of overstimulation, wanting to stop, panting heavily, whale eyes, and stopping the play at that point.

UnpopularCrow, in What are your dental hygiene tips and hacks

I spoke with a dental hygienist in a hot tub once (that’s how you know this information is solid). She did say to avoid rinsing or mouthwash after brushing with fluoride toothpaste. She also wasn’t a huge fan of alcohol mouthwash in general as it kills both good and bad bacteria. Too bad because I really do enjoy the “burn” feeling when I use it.

Dexx1s,

I’ve heard both, but I can’t not rinse after brushing. Any taste of actual toothpaste in my mouth is unsettling to me.

LordOfTheChia,

Just let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then reward yourself by washing it down with a cup of fresh orange juice.

Buffalox,

Acid and sugar as a dental hygiene advice. Really?
In this context you might as well recommend a Coca Cola!

hitmyspot,

I think you’ve been whooshed.

If you drink juice with toothpaste still in your mouth, it’s awful. The toothpaste is basic, the oj is acidic as you said. The reaction doesn’t taste food. This was a joke, not advice.

LordOfTheChia, (edited )

It’s the foaming agent toothpastes typically use (sodium laureth sulphate - SLS) suppresses the sweet receptors on our tongues.

When you drink OJ right after, the sweetness is suppressed and you only taste the bitter and other flavors.

Edit: SLS also breaks up lipids that may be blocking bitter taste receptors on your tongue.

Catoblepas,

I was told by my dental hygienist that although you shouldn’t rinse after brushing, you can spit as many times as you want. Your saliva isn’t going to be able to totally rinse off the fluoride the way water will. IME it usually only takes a few extra spits to get from overwhelmingly minty to present but bearable.

Dexx1s,

It still irks me. I guess it’s just me having rinsed my entire life.

GissaMittJobb,

You get used to it after a while. The taste of the toothpaste subsides pretty quickly as well, so it’s not like an extended period of suffering.

ApathyTree,
@ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

I got a sensodyne toothpaste recently that doesn’t have that overwhelming toothpaste taste. It’s the nourish stuff and its flavor is “natural mint and citrus oil”, and it’s mostly not the mint that I taste. It was super weird for a few days, but I strongly prefer it over toothpaste flavored toothpaste.

Maybe something like that would work better for you, as well.

GTA IV Pakistan edition

Basically, just a GTA4 pirate rip and modded and sold on actual disks.

There are several, and they are hard to find online because any uploads of it probably don’t exist anywhere anymore, and were already rare due to aforementioned disks.

Some of them are so regional and probably made by one person, the only way to find one is to get a computer HDD with it installed.

Daxtron2,

What differences does it have from the original?

mlg,
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

Pakistani flags everywhere, reskinned character and NPCs, Pakistani songs, story characters replaced by famous IRL people, including some known mafia lol. Some original missions and reduxed interactions and updated story. Also lots of military additions.

Some were also themed after a specific city like Karachi or Lahore.

I’m sure Pakistan wasn’t the only country since I’ve heard there were hilarious and great modded bootlegs in other countries as well.

stackPeek,
@stackPeek@lemmy.world avatar

Funny, there is also a mod for GTA SA like this except it’s for my country haha

numberfour002, in What is an obscure piece of media or videogame that you think nobody else here has heard of?

On the Internet, everything is fundamentally both obscure yet ubiquitous, or so it seems. But in real life, there are at least 2 things that seem to be obscure to the point that people don’t believe me when I mention it:

  1. A Super Nintendo game released in the US as Super Ninja Boy. It was a follow-up to (or maybe remake of) Little Ninja Brothers on the NES. I’ve even been told that I was confused and that I’m probably thinking of Legend of the Mystical Ninja.
  2. On the original Playstation, there used to be a series of demo discs that would have “hidden” features on them if you pressed the right button(s). One of those demo discs had the entire music video for Usher’s song “Pony” and other than randos on the internet and my friends/family who saw it with me, I’ve never met anybody that remembers it. If anybody here does remember that demo disc, I think there was another hidden music video on there, I vaguely remember a band, with various shots of the drummer wearing black athletic-type shorts with a white band around the leg but beyond that I really do not recall.
Krudler,

Bro I was at the thrift store and I saw a PlayStation demo disc for $2 and I laughed because I didn’t even think it should be there. But I will literally go back, take a picture, buy it and send it to you if it makes your Christmas better lol

numberfour002,

That’s awesome and very kind of you to offer. Not to be ungrateful, but I’m sure someone else would appreciate it far more than me. I don’t have a Playstation anymore and I don’t even have a CD/DVD drive on any device that would be able to run an emulator. Merry Christmas and thanks for being so thoughful!

Buffalox, (edited ) in What are your dental hygiene tips and hacks

Rinsing with salt water seems to work well for me. I have no idea what the science says about it though. But there is some talk in new treatments about ionizing stimulating healing, and I wouldn’t be surprised if salt water does a bit of that too.?
I also wouldn’t be surprised if it helps remineralize. Very subjectively it feels like it does a little, but it’s easy to fool oneself with wishful thinking. Preferably have a dentist monitor results.

TheBiscuitLout,

My hygienist recommended that I use salt water instead of mouthwash, so I’d think you’re probably barking up the right tree

garbagebagel,

I am allergic to some types of mouthwash so I was told to use salt water but not as often as you’d use regular mouthwash (only every few days) because it’s rougher on your teeth or some such, I can’t remember the reasoning.

Get an electric toothbrush. Don’t push hard, just slowly move it and hold it gently against your teeth / gums in each spot.

If you hate flossing like I do, a waterpik is helpful.

Brush twice a day.

Don’t rinse after brushing like you said.

StopSpazzing,
@StopSpazzing@lemmy.world avatar

Waterpik is not a replacement for flossing, fyi

Shadow,
@Shadow@lemmy.ca avatar

No but it’s better than nothing.

altima_neo,
@altima_neo@lemmy.zip avatar

Waterpik is nifty, but I found a solution that works well in conjunction with it, but without the frustration of flossing . Gum Proxabrush are little brushes that go between your teeth to scrub out the gunk. My hygienist was saying they work better than floss. I’ve really liked them.

Zorg,
@Zorg@lemmings.world avatar

My teeth are so tight I can sometimes barely get floss down between them. A brush would have no chance of cleaning the whole sides of the teeth.

surewhynotlem,

You may already know, but Glide by oralb is great for tight teeth. It’s flatter and slippery. The only issue I’ve found is that it snaps more often.

Zorg,
@Zorg@lemmings.world avatar

Yeah, I loved that floss! Right up until I found it’s so good because it’s coated in Teflon.

surewhynotlem,

Fuck. Thanks I guess?.. now I need new floss

tarmac,

What do you use instead?

cheese_greater, (edited )

Doesn’t the WaterPik sort of negate the don’t rinse thing, or are you saying less is more in terms of water getting in the way of remineralization and you net benefit from using that for flossing. I definitely prefer it over physical floss

Use flosser first, THEN brush without rinsing. Got it 😁

CuddlyCassowary,

You can do the WaterPik before brushing and then don’t rinse after brushing.

semperverus, in Why are Some Apps Updated Daily?
@semperverus@lemmy.world avatar

The real answee is CI/CD DevOps pipelines.

What this means is that, when I as a developer push changes to my dev branch in my code repository, a bunch of scripts and stuff automatically test my code for a bunch of things, and if all of those tests pass, another script is run that pushes the code to my main branch and then compiles my app from the main code, and finally the last script pushes the compiled “artefact” out to the public (.exe’s out on a webpage to download, a linux package gets pushed out to repos and to Flathub, Android apps get pushed to the Play and/or F-Droid stores, Apple stuff gets sent to an Apple computer and compiled and uploaded to the App store, etc.)

It streamlines the development process and makes life on the developer so, so much easier while making sure bugs also get fixed for users much quicker and the app stays more stable.

Redfox8, in What is an obscure piece of media or videogame that you think nobody else here has heard of?

I recorded a film off the tv channel Sy-Fy a few years backcalled AfterDeath (not the 2023 film that comes up in a search). It’s possibly not that obscure, but I believe it was a low budget film so maybe not at all well known. Anyhow, it didn’t record all the film for some reason so I have never seen the end (last 15min or so), but despite the clear lack of quality it had an interesting premise (a group of young people who wake up in a beach cabin but apparently in the middle of some quasi-nowhere). I was intrigued as to how the approach to playing out the scenario would end but maybe I enjoyed it more for not having been able to see the ending if it was z bad one!
