Clbull, (edited ) in What's something you'd like to leave behind in the old year and not carry into the new year?

My tendency to get walked all over. Recent events made me realise that I need to get a lot better at putting my foot down and telling people when there’s a problem.

To cut a week-long story short, my NYE plans to do pub karaoke (which I planned nearly a month in advance) got hijacked when another friend group decided to make alternate plans to go to the club and make one of my close friends cancel on me. This led to me being pressured by another close friend into cutting my original plans two hours short so that my friend group could all be together at midnight. Of course, the other group making the alt plans all pulled out on the morning of the 31st Dec, leaving me and my three other friends with tickets to go to a nightclub that I didn’t particularly want to go to.

I don’t like clubbing. Nightclubs are overcrowded, loud to the point where you literally can’t hear anybody and have to yell at the bartender to even order a drink, and they make me feel isolated. I also feel insecure about my physical attractiveness and jealous due to my inability to pull.

Botched NYE plans aside, 2023 definitely ended on a good note. I went from working in a crappy purchase ledger job, to facing layoffs, to escaping redundancy by finding a much better internal role that has honestly felt like a culture shock to me.

victorz,

Do you, king! You deserve it (I think)! ❤️💪

witchergeraltofrivia, (edited ) in If humans went extinct, what would the Earth look like one year later?

I like the idea of humans dissapearing.
From a neutral point of view, it’s too simple, one species in exchange for millions of other species and a planet.
Also on the universe scale, humans don’t really matter so no one cares except for us.

otp, in Mickey Mouse is now public domain (Steamboat Willie specifically). What do you think we will see this year?

A lot of Disney throwing its weight around as people accidentally overstep the bounds of copyright, trademark and other legal stuff like that.

Not saying Disney would be in the right. But Disney is bonkers for this kind of stuff, and they’ve got ridiculous amounts of money to spend in court.

someguy3,

Well the copyright expired, that’s why it’s now public domain. But the trademark is still there.

Rhynoplaz,

That’s why they worked him into one of their animated intro logos a few years ago.

someguy3,

A trademark (also written trade mark or trade-mark[1]) is a type of intellectual property consisting of a recognizable sign, design, or expression that identifies a product or service from a particular source and distinguishes it from others.[2][3]

I would say an animated intro isn’t a trademark, and even then making a movie with that material isn’t copying someone’s trademark for your trademark. But this could get interesting.

unrelatedkeg,

I mean they just need to slap a ™ on every official appearence of Mickey. Hell, they can easily say an abstract representstion of Mickey’s ears represent Disney and they wouldn’t even be wrong.

someguy3, (edited )

This is pushing my knowledge but trademark infringement would be if you use their logo as your logo. You can’t mislead people into thinking your product comes from them. That doesn’t mean you can’t ever have public domain things in your product.

Bristlecone, (edited ) in If humans went extinct, what would the Earth look like one year later?

One thing I frequently think about is just how toxic everything would turn if humans suddenly disappeared. There’s a hell of a lot of waste and fuel that would go unmanaged and seep into the ecosystem. Nuclear reactors across the earth would a irradiate almost the entire water supply on the planet. Life might survive but not before a lot more species went extinct. Huge tracts of land would be no longer able to support life for possibly thousands of years

Nomecks,

So many tailings ponds and retention dams would fail and severely mess up the landscape.

Donebrach,
@Donebrach@lemmy.world avatar

In the words of the inimitable Jeff (Chef) Goldblum, “life, uh, finds a way.”

mojofrododojo,

yeah exactly my reaction, I’d worry the world would be messy - at least near any nuclear plant that doesn’t self shut down… I agree it would irradiate an enormous amount of water and soil but 1000 years later? most of the hot stuff will be long gone and nature will just adapt around the dead zones. see the results @ Pripyat.

Bristlecone,

Most of the radiation won’t go away for tens of thousands of years actually, We also don’t know the long-term effects on the animals and life in those zones, extreme cancer occurrence is likely for one

son_named_bort, in What gifts that you received for Christmas this year are already in the trash?

Candy wrappers because I ate the candy.

JoeKrogan, in What's something you'd like to leave behind in the old year and not carry into the new year?

Stress

Clbull,

A lot of my stress disappeared when changing jobs. Before that, I was having a lot of sleepless nights and even had frequent brain zaps/hypnic jerks.

MrsDoyle, in What gifts that you received for Christmas this year are already in the trash?

Not in the trash, but I regifted something a friend sent me the week before Christmas. Wrapped it in fresh paper and gave it to another friend on Christmas Eve. No-one need know…

Rhynoplaz,

That’s funny, one of my friends gave me T-shirt with HER name on it. I don’t know when I’ll ever wear a shirt that says MrsDoyle. 🤷🏻‍♂️

hellothere,

Could it become your tea-shirt? The one you wear when making tea?

i_am_not_a_robot,
@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

Sleepwear?

phillaholic, in Court documents naming Epstein associates are to be made public this week? Who do you think will come out the worst?

There will be innocent people on this list, and those people will be harmed more than the those on the list that aren’t innocent. You need to keep in mind that Epstein used paling around with famous people as cover. There will be names that associated with him before anything improper came out about him including flying on his plane. A name on this list doesn’t mean anything by itself. Don’t let the ones that are tied to specific situations get away with it by spreading blame onto people who are on a list without any specific allegations.

waz, in What gifts that you received for Christmas this year are already in the trash?

Whirley-Pop.

Opend it up, realized it was a cheap piece of garbage. Went to return it to Amazon, and apparently it can’t be returnd.

I love some homemade stovetop popcorn, but it is way easier to make and clean up using a regular stainless pot than that POS.

Usernameblankface,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

Aw man, I use one of those often. IDK what about it is garbage, it works great and hasn’t given me any issues in years.

Fogle,

Yeah my girlfriend loves her whirleypop. But I don’t know what Amazon trash they’re selling now hers is quite old

Usually_Lurker,
@Usually_Lurker@lemmy.world avatar

You can get a new top with metal gears for cheap from their website. This thing is a tank and will never need to be replaced. Also for clean up it gets wiped out with a paper towel when cool, and placed back on the kitchen rack. Whirley-Pops are awesome. Simple does not equal cheap.

waz,

The one I got has metal gears. They are the main point of frustration. They don’t really make a full rotation without getting bound/jammed up. Slow, fast, or somewhere in-between, it always felt like I was fighting to get the only moving parts to move.

I’ve no problem with simple. I like simple. For me, this thing isn’t simple, it’s frustrating.

Maybe I just got a bad one. A lot of people seem to have an appreciation for it that matches yours. I’d be inclined to exchange it for a different one. Sadly, Amazon refuses to accept it as a returnable item.

Usernameblankface,
@Usernameblankface@lemmy.world avatar

I’ll have to look into the metal geared top. Mine has the plastic gears, and those have held up fine for me. Still, I wouldn’t mind an upgrade.

AtariDump, in What's something you'd like to leave behind in the old year and not carry into the new year?

Eating poorly and about 50 lbs / 22.68 kg / 3.571 stone / 8 hogsheads to the yard.

circuitfarmer, (edited ) in Mickey Mouse is now public domain (Steamboat Willie specifically). What do you think we will see this year?
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Quite honestly: nothing. Some folks might deliberately use Steamboat Willie in some content because they can, and Disney will likely try and attack some of those people in court based on trademark law if applicable.

But I don’t really see a lot of actual utility in the Steamboat Willie character, outside of Disney itself. Any use of it is ultimately just referring to the “I can do this now” aspect of having just entered public domain, which frankly isn’t that interesting.

LifeOfChance,

If you look what happened with pooh I’m guessing we may see the same thing happen here. There will definitely be testing of the waters on what people can do

Lemminary,

use Steamboat Willy in some content because they can

“Fuck you, Disney! Look what I can do now” makes armpit fart noises

circuitfarmer, (edited )
@circuitfarmer@lemmy.sdf.org avatar

Ha, I mean, yeah. What other reason would someone want Steamboat Willie?

I legit hope there is one for artistic purposes. I just think the majority will not be for artistic purposes.

crsu,
Kaizodrack,

Saw ONE design of the character on Twitter that actually made for an interesting idea that could be expanded upon, there IS space for someone to do smth cool about it but I honestly don’t think anyone will. Hey, Toontown Rewritten could model this Mickey and use it for something I guess.

CosmicCleric,
@CosmicCleric@lemmy.world avatar

But I don’t really see a lot of actual utility in the Steamboat Willy character

Could he be used to sell riverboat cruises?

solitaire, (edited ) in What gifts that you received for Christmas this year are already in the trash?
@solitaire@infosec.pub avatar

My neighbour gave me a TV. To be precise, he rushed it to me unannounced at the exact moment I was leaving to go to a party. I accepted as quickly as I could in an effort to still make my train.

It turns out it’s about 15 years old and I have no use for it. He’s a lovely man but I intend to post it as free to a good home then drop it at an e-recycling station if nobody is interested.

Blamemeta,

Is it a CRT? Big giant tube tv? They can fetch decent prices.

dirtySourdough, in What gifts that you received for Christmas this year are already in the trash?

I mentioned to a family member how much I like my garlic press. I then received a garlic press for Christmas and will certainly be regifting it.

ApathyTree,
@ApathyTree@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

What kind do you have?

I have an ancient one, probably my great grandmothers, and the garlic just gets smashed into the square-but-actually-round holes and it’s impossible to get most of it out.

Mostly it makes smashed garlic, which I can do with a knife much more easily…

Mr_Blott,

I got an Oxo Good Grips one for my Christmas this year and I think it’s the last press I’ll ever need

Usually_Lurker,
@Usually_Lurker@lemmy.world avatar

Pampered Chef also makes a very nice one. Usually pampered chef is terribly overpriced but they do have a few high quality gems in the catalog.

Mr_Blott,

Yeah I saw those but they were stupidly overpriced like every they do . The Oxo ones were about €30, amazing price for a BIFL item

Gingernate,

I have this one as well. I like how it’s one piece, unlike some cheaper ones

Blue_Morpho, (edited )

It’s not one piece. It looks like one piece but the rubber handles eventually separate. The past couple of years I have used it without the rubber handle covers.

Blue_Morpho, (edited )

It will last about 5 years. I have one. The rubber handles fall off and the chrome plating peels.

Mr_Blott,

It does say not to put them in a dishwasher or that’ll happen

Poem_for_your_sprog,

Are people just too lazy to chop garlic?

smort,
@smort@lemmy.world avatar

Sometimes you want it pressed rather than chopped

Poem_for_your_sprog,

Pestle and mortar? Smash it with a spoon?

Buddahriffic,

Knife works better, since it’s a flat surface. A spoon would push it to the side instead of crushing evenly. Mortar and pestle is overkill unless you’ve got a lot of garlic to press.

Honytawk,

You don’t know my diet

hinterlufer,

Pressed garlic has a much more intense flavor. For a stew or most cooked stuff I would squash and chop it, for sauces or garlic oil I prefer pressed.

It’s also much faster as you don’t have to peel it and if you wash the press right away it’s just as fast as washing a knife.

sanguinepar,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

It has literally never occurred to me that there’s no need to peel garlic if it’s going in a press. I feel dumb now.

TheActualDevil,

Is your family member Google Ad Sense?

“I see you spent a week researching PSUs for your computer and I see that you finally bought one. Would you like to buy a PSU? because even though we know you bought one we’ll be showing you nothing but ads for PSUs for the foreseeable future.”

technicalogical,

Ad Sense doesn’t know you’ve made your purchase.

A_Random_Idiot,

Its really bad when you’re in your living room talking about PSUs, then all of a sudden the only adds you see online are about PSU’s.

Buddahriffic,

Yeah, I’d be all like, “wtf happened to my ad blocker!?”

Speaking of which, if you talk about ad blockers in your living room, do you get ads for those?

GregorGizeh,

Why have you not violently disposed of your “smart” electronics that apparently permanently monitor you for amazons profit?

I_Fart_Glitter,
umulu,
@umulu@lemmy.world avatar

Regifting it because you don’t need a second one? Or because the one gifted to you is of lower quality?

dirtySourdough,

Both. I bought one from this brand before and it rusted after the first use. I’ll admit I may not have washed it properly, but that’s not something I expect from my kitchenware. And I don’t see a use for a second garlic press, but I’m open to hearing one

umulu,
@umulu@lemmy.world avatar

That’s some chinesium level shit right there XD I wouldn’t want that crap either.

dexa_scantron, in If humans went extinct, what would the Earth look like one year later?
@dexa_scantron@lemmy.world avatar

A novel just came out by Debbie Urbanski called After World that is about this; I’m reading it now. If you’re interested in the possible consequences of human extinction, I recommend checking it out.

0x4E4F,
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

There are no possible consiquences, nature regains equlibrium again.

HeyJoe,

Not necessarily. If we disappear, there will be no one left to maintain the dangerous technology we use that could ruin the planet further if it fails. For example, nuclear power plants.

Of course, even that will eventually clear up, and the planet will recover, but I wasn’t sure if you meant short-term or long-term.

0x4E4F,
@0x4E4F@sh.itjust.works avatar

Long term. Those problems will be resolved (mostly) in a few hundred years.

dexa_scantron,
@dexa_scantron@lemmy.world avatar

Some examples of short-term consequences that the book explores: who is the last human on Earth? How do they feel? How do humans come to terms with the extinction as it’s happening? How does society prepare, and how do we avoid sabotage and violence on the way out?

Longer-term consequences that the book explores: what lasts longest of what we leave behind? If the extinction happens after we develop more autonomous computers, what do those computers do once the humans are gone? What have they been directed to do?

venoft, in If humans went extinct, what would the Earth look like one year later?
@venoft@lemmy.world avatar

The first casualties would be the billions of animals that are dependent on humans. Pets, zoo animals, farm animals in stables or enclosed meadows, animals in laboratories and research centers.

Some would go extinct, those who are dependent on breeding programs, like rhinos and some primates. Of course the extinction rate will immediately start to level off to almost normal rates. Once the forests and other nature grow back it will be back to normal and new species can evolve to fill the niches left behind by now extinct species.

echodot,

It would depend on what the cause of human disappearance was and how quick it was.

The truth is pretty much anything capable of actually rendering humans extinct would probably render most animals extinct humans are far better surviving than most animals are. You talking asteroid impact, solar flare, nuclear war, massive climate change.

Humans can go into shelters, or build mitigation technology. The animals would just die if we didn’t help them.

The only possible way I can imagine that humans would go extinct quickly and not any other life form would be some kind of viral disease outbreak either natural or artificial, but I realistically can’t see something like that wiping out the whole species. You could have a death toll of 10 million people and it wouldn’t even equal 1% of the global population. Especially considering it wouldn’t be 10 million people all from the same area.

Think about all of the things humans have survived and with far inferior technology then anything we have now, ice ages, super volcanoes, global pandemics that keep coming back, hell in the 19th century one of the largest asteroids to hit the world since the extinction of the dinosaurs hit earth and literally no one died or even noticed.

LordOfLocksley,

You’re forgetting the most obvious cause.
