Wugger, in What is your unpopular flim opinion

At the top of every reddit “What movie should never be remade?” thread is the LOTR trilogy. Well… I totally agree the movies are great, but not quite timeless. When I rewatched them a couple years ago for the first time in a long time I couldn’t get over the feeling that it screamed “Filmed and directed in the late 90s and early 00s!” I don’t have the film knowledge to point out exactly what it is but something about the way it is shot looks very dated to me and hasn’t aged as well, in my opinion, as everyone on the internet says it is.

I really do love the music and the art style and sets and casting too. Maybe it doesn’t need a reshoot, but a recut?

DrFuggles,

I think part of it is that movies are edited differently now. We’ve become used to much faster pacing, much denser storytelling and sweeping drone shots of everything, so older movies generally feel a bit lame now

pixeltree,
@pixeltree@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Some of the green screen shots could definitely use updating

Chobbes,

This was exactly my thought… Some of the ent scenes are really rough now. Fantastic movies, though!

pixeltree,
@pixeltree@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Tbh I think it’s kind of impressive that the green screen work is the rough part of the ent scenes. Treebeard himself is still really impressive imo. I had some of the eagle scenes in mind though

Blackmist,

It still looks better than The Hobbit though.

The CGI is still a bit dated (although somehow The Flash topped that), but there’s far less compositing of solo actors in green rooms, due to forced perspective.

GentlemanLoser,

Man, hard disagree. Some of the CGI hasn’t aged especially well but those movies are technical marvels, the likes of which will never happen again because nobody will ever have the passion for the project Peter Jackson did.

MrBusiness,

CGI definitely doesn’t hold up, that troll in Mines of Moria, various Legolas shots, etc. are pretty rough. But everything else is still great.

On a side note I’ll always hate the people that decided to add all that CGI to 2011 The Thing when they had already filmed everything with practical effects. If I ever meet them IRL I will give them the most well deserved ass punch.

Side side note, still waiting for the practical effects version of 2011 The Thing to be released.

Shyfer, (edited )

The problem is no one is ever going to put in the work and prep production effort that Jackson and his team did. It could be made better and more modern, but will it in our current environment? No, all the practical effects would be replaced by CGI, all the armor and costumes for the tons of extras would just be CGI, the extras themselves would be CGI, and it probably would be packed with meta commentary and jokes. Just look at The Hobbit compared to Lord of the Rings. It doesn’t work without all the effort and pre-production, and I don’t think we’re getting a studio to ever make that bet again. It was pure luck we got it the first time.

Rhynoplaz, in Can someone answer a nagging question i have about CRT?

Not Rick had a great answer, but I wanted to try to contribute simple examples:

True, skin color is a trait that can be traced by DNA, but so is eye color, or hair color. We could easily create “races” based on “Brown hair vs blonde hair”, “brown eyes vs green eyes”, “people who need glasses vs people that don’t”, “shorties and tall-os”, “those who can roll their tongue, and the inferior swine that were never blessed by the Great tongue father.”

All traceable in the same way as skin color, but we consider them “features”, and not race defining traits.

Who decided that? And why?

Anticorp, (edited )

Yeah that’s clear. As to the why, I suppose it’s because our brains are wired to categorize things and find patterns everywhere. It is useful to have labels for groups with common traits, although I do recognize the issues with that when it comes to systemic discrimination.

Edit: thanks for the answer!

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

The thing is, hair is equally as heritable, and immediately visible. As humans, we can see and categorise skin equally with hair.

The fact that we don’t use hair as a major defining trait though is arbitrary. That’s just social norms, nothing more.

Anticorp,

We kind of do though. There’s nothing official about hair types, but there’s all kinds of stereotypes about people with certain hair colors, like blondes, or redheads. There’s even some scientific evidence that people with red hair have higher pain thresholds.

ada,
@ada@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Those are not major defining traits. They could be, but they’re not.

Michael Bay movies need more explosions.

Donjuanme,

“The rock” is one of the great films of the 90s, if not top 10 ever made.

smort,
@smort@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah but wouldn’t it have been better if it had more explosions?

nomecks,

Nobody:

Pennywise: hits detonator

Deconceptualist,

But like, more of the same cheesy low-ordinance gasoline explosions? Or are you asking to up the ante with realistic C4 high explosives?

If unsure, go watch Mythbusters ;)

BrianTheeBiscuiteer, in What are some generational differences between millennials and Gen Z ?

The direction we prefer for scrolling.

get_off_the_phone,

RIP scroll bar and scroll wheel. I’m swiping down to move the bar, which does the heavy lifting of moving the page up for me. This allows me to scroll more with less fatigue and thus I can consume more internet and therefore get more knowledge. Plus, swiping down works your bigger superior forearm muscles, which is the part of the arm that the ladies like, whereas swiping up works the inferior muscle on the other side that no one cares about. In conclusion, scroll down for bigger brain, better grip, and more birches.

intensely_human,

I recommend turning your mouse around

@i_am_not_a_robot@feddit.uk avatar

Woman across the way chatting to somebody and randomly exposes her breasts. The person she was talking to said, “whoa, that man might see!” (I don’t think this was even a reference to me as I was at a weird angle and don’t think I was visible). She got them out some more and shouted something about getting a good look at them. I’d backed away more by this point.

(I have an even more X rated one, maybe later)

gumnut,

That was Kitty. She does that a lot. youtu.be/u1alISOTGfE

hperrin, in What is something you watch/do but not for its intended purpose?

I don’t know if this is its intended purpose, but every time I move I watch Hoarders so I’m compelled to throw away a bunch of my stuff.

slazer2au, in What country are you using lemmy from?

Netherlands

hoshikarakitaridia, in What gifts are you getting for your friends and family members?

Bathing salts, a chair cushion, a calendar, a cooking book, slippers and some chocolate.

It all sounds random but what makes them good presents is that I have reason to believe my family actually wants those things.

That said, I think next time I’ll be giving less thought into it because apparently half my family would like to stop with the presents cause they feel like they don’t need more shit and also don’t like being obligated to buy stuff for other people. Fair enough, but if it’s small things I still like gifting stuff.

I looked up how much that would cost out of curiosity and it really fluctuates based on where you live apparently. $1500-$50000

CuddlyCassowary,

I live in Colorado, so generally some unusual form of weed for those who enjoy that. A dispensary near me has THC chocolate truffles, those usually go over well.

FunkyMonk,

Xariphon, in Former religious lemmings, what made you quit religion or stop being a believer?

Survived eight years of Catholic school and read the Bible cover to cover. Between the flagrant hypocrisy and neglect in the school system and seeing the contradictions and bullshit in the book with my own eyes (and how nobody in the church even remotely tried to live up to the good parts), I just couldn't anymore.

Then I read about the Bible and its history, from the Council of Nicea to the confession letters from later translators. I saw that it's essentially a multilingual game of telephone weighted with politics, salesmanship, cultural eradication, and so forth, and it really became laughable to me that any thinking person could possibly ever take it seriously again.

It becomes easy to dismiss the rest when you realize they're pretty much all telling the same fairytales.

TheDoctorDonna, in What are your "poor person" money life hacks?

Pretty much every item of clothing I own is from the thrift store or has been second handed in some way. I love being able to find clothes that are more my style without the $70+ price tags and I’m able to maintain a business casual wardrobe required for my office.

Furniture that isn’t beds are all second hand as well, I just steam clean everything upholstered. Buying brand new is a money making sham that only fills our landfills unnecessarily.

Also, learning how to cook has saved us a lot of money of takeout and prepackaged meals. There are so many ways to learn now too.

We also no longer own a vehicle, we walk, bike, or transit everywhere. I do maintain a license so I can rent a car when necessary though. Vehicles nickle and dime you to death when you own the outright or cost a years wages or so to buy, plus gas and insurance prices are insane. It costs me $500 a year to ride the bus.

ani, in What do you want for Christmas?

Peace

A_Random_Idiot, in Which items/products were you once able to get from local shops on a whim that you now more or less have to order online?

appliance parts.

Used to be so many stores that sold parts for self repair. Most of them have disappeared (at least around me), and the few that remain are either a ridiculous drive away, or ridiculously expensive. Like, sure, I could drive 3 hours to your store, buy the part I need for 70 bucks, and drive 3 hours back home.

Or I can go online and order the part and have it in a day or two for less than quarter of the price.

altima_neo,
@altima_neo@lemmy.zip avatar

Im lucky theres a dude nearby selling parts out of a small shop. Hes a wizard at appliances, too, so even though the parts a lot more expensive (because he sells OEM stuff and not Chinese knock offs), hes got a lot of knowledge you can glean from him.

A_Random_Idiot,

Oh yeah, I only get OEM stuff.

I dont get the knockoffs. I don’t want to do the job 5 times in a week, be out the money, and go get the OEM part anyway.

PlzGivHugs, in How do I stop my cats from eating my plants?

You could try spraying them with a strong smell like lemon juice or pepper water. Depends on the cat, but generally they don’t like these smells. You could also try and find some more bite-able toys, and trt and encourage them to target those instead of the plant, although in my experience, most cats are too stubborn for that.

3TH4Li4, in How do I stop my cats from eating my plants?

There is a plant called cyperus zumula (cat grass) that you can buy for your cats to munch on. It’s not much but maybe they will prefer to eat that instead of trying to take a bite out of your cactus. Also place your plants higher up if you can, in a place where they have no way to jump up to.

Tar_alcaran,

My cats will absolutely chew on catgrass. After every thing else has been munched up.

Kyle_The_G,

I got my ragdoll that and instead of nibbling he took a whole mouthful, bit down, picked the whole thing up and wrung it around like a dog that just got a squirrel, he sprayed grass, seeds and dirt all over lol. He’s a bit of a bam bam.

lefaucet,

This mostly worked for me. He preferred the catgrass over the succulents.

I eventally bought like 4 pots of catgrass and would rotate them every week or so so theyd last longer.
