I wish there was somewhere to talk about Counter-Strike, particularly the e-sports scene.

PlzGivHugs, (edited )

Ironically, I want somewhere to talk about Counter-Strike excluding the e-sports scene. There is nowhere to learn smokes, share maps, or even find a team.

ApostleO, in Rap music video with an island, with a lake, with an island on it etc

I don’t know the music video, but this might help: Wikipedia - Recursive islands and lakes.

Asidonhopo, in What physical features do you find attractive on a person that would be considered unattractive by your culture's beauty standards?

I’ve always found blemishes on the skin to be attractive for some reason. Like it shows their humanity or something.

rikudou, (edited ) in What free things online should everyone take advantage of?
@rikudou@lemmings.world avatar

baby-journal.app if you have kids and value privacy (disclaimer: I’ve written the app).

Edit: It’s an app for tracking your baby activities, like feeding, sleeping, diaper changes etc. Fully end-to-end encrypted and fully open source and self-hostable, installable on both iOS and Android.

all4one,

What’s this do? There’s no explanation or screenshots or anything.

corsicanguppy,

“Try my app because I wrote it”?

rikudou,
@rikudou@lemmings.world avatar

No, use the app if you value privacy and don’t want companies to sell data about your kids just so they can give you better ads.

But you do you, for all I care, people twisting other people’s words are not really someone whose opinion I care about.

Rapie,

Why does the data need to go online in the first place?

rikudou,
@rikudou@lemmings.world avatar

Because multiple people can have access to the same data, like two parents, possibly a nanny etc.

yesman, in Are Americans more prone to conspiracy theories than people in other countries?

I wouldn’t say individuals are more susceptible to it, but the US’s history is intertwined with conspiracy theories from the start. The founding “father” Sam Adams had tracts printed claiming the British had a secret plan to enslave white colonists ahead of the American war of independence.

The Spanish American war was stoked by a conspiracy that Spain had sabotaged our warship “Maine”. If you’ve ever wondered why the US Navy has a base in Cuba.

The “corrupt bargain” of 1824 was a supposed deal between JQ Adams and Clay to exclude Jackson from the presidency despite his electoral victory. Jackson too, was the subject of a theory that he and congressmen disgruntled over tariffs would dissolve the union and install Jackson as a military dictator should he loose in 1828.

Chriswild,

People believe there is a magic sky dad who loves you so much they send you to suffer for eternity with the original naughty child who apparently wants to punish you for doing what they want.

Religions generally make conspiracy theories seem rational.

Atin, in What salary do you think would make you happy?

Enough that I didn’t have to worry about not being able to pay rent and bills.

_edge, in What salary do you think would make you happy?

No amount will make me happy.

Once your basic needs are met, the equation becomes: Salary = Expenses + Savings. So, the questions becomes, how much savings makes you happy?

If you are happy to work in your job until “retirement age”, a small savings rate will do, in theory; that is if the salary is adjusted for cost-of-living and tax.

Are you happy working this job for the rest of your life? Full time (whatever that means in your work culture)?

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Yes, I’m lucky enough to have a good salary, but I can tell people there is no top limit. Once you have your needs met then you’re exactly right, it’s about retirement planning and savings, and there could always be more. The fact is that the only true money amount that will make someone happy is the amount that allows them not to work anymore

NigelFrobisher, in Are Americans more prone to conspiracy theories than people in other countries?

No. An old colleague of mine is on LinkedIn non-stop posting crazy QAnon shit and RT headlines. Anti-vax more-or-less started in the UK with the Andrew Wakefield affair and it seems to be super-popular in Australia too. Conspiracy Theory kind of helps people rationalise the absolute chaotic mess of the world we live in by reducing it to simple narratives where a defined enemy is out to get us.

Eldritch,

It’s easier to think everyone is out to get you. Than that you are just an insignificant self sabotaging fuck up. Not even on the radar of the elder gods

morphballganon, in Are Americans more prone to conspiracy theories than people in other countries?

We see a lot of efforts to convince suckers of absurdities in the US because there’s a lot of economic value in swinging American votes.

In other countries that either don’t have voting, or don’t have a lot of economic power, there’s less to be gained by befuddling morons.

jaxxed,

There is a hidden assumption in your comment: conspiracy theories are intentionally created or reinforced with specific strategic goals.

tal,
@tal@lemmy.today avatar

While I think that it’s probably rare, there have been conspiracy theories that are intentionally crafted to achieve goals.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_INFEKTION

And I am very sure that there have been many efforts to amplify existing conspiracies; you can look at disinformation research.

jaxxed,

I think that the majority of conspiracy theories are asroturfed, even those that actually started as grass roots. The Russians clearly admit that reinforcing propaganda rhat sticks, is a big part of their strategy.

Randomgal, in What are some food items that cost less than what they "should"?

To be fair, banana are only cheap in North America compared to the cost of other fruits. Bananas are pretty expensive if you consider you can get around 8-10 for a dollar in places where they are local.

intensely_human,

I can get 4 for a dollar where I live in the States

Devdogg,

Yes and 8 for a dollar seems to be twice what you’d get.

RBWells, (edited ) in You have a magic pill, which de-ages you by 20 years. You can take it once in your life only, so long as you are at least 20. What age — past, current or future — do you reckon is best to take it?

Probably 65, as 45 was my vampire age, and I have enjoyed the time since that age. I am not sure I’d like to go back to fertility though. Think about it, say you take it at 40, menarche around 15 and menopause around 55, that’s periods for 60 years instead of 40 years, and twenty extra years you might get pregnant.

I’ve had some time to think on this, I still say probably 65. I waffled for awhile because I would like to have the build I had before the last 2 children, but keep the kids, the ten pound wonder blew out my abs and skin which happily bounced completely back several times did not make a complete recovery with the last. But the 3 additional years I spent nursing them provides additional protection vs. breast cancer, don’t think I’d want to give up their half of that. And I have literally felt better and healthier in the years after 40, so rather have more of those.
