HipsterTenZero, in Does Piped.video actually work for anyone?
@HipsterTenZero@dormi.zone avatar

Gotta swap instances pretty frequently with piped in my experience. Or just find a good invidious instance, is what i ended up doing.

lemann,

Pretty much my experience when using piped on my desktop, quick to resolve so not too much of an issue.

On the other side of things, my partner got tired of that and now uses FreeTube (which falls back to Invidious on failure IIRC)

tygerprints, in Why do most people refuse to accept that they are wrong

I encounter that all the time especially on public forums like this. This is a quote from an article I found about it online: According to psychologist, speaker and author Guy Winch, most people who consistently refuse to admit they're wrong do so because they have incredibly fragile egos. They clam up and insist they're right, demonstrating what experts term "psychological rigidity", as a defense mechanism.

Also I think that telling someone they are wrong comes across as a criticism about their intellect and they respond defensively by instinct. And, another reason is because people don't want to believe anything that contradicts their preferred view of the world. So if you "correct" someone they tend to act like you're attacking them or as too stupid to know what "truth" is.

It's really a telling distinction because today, most people behave in this defensive way. You don't see many people willing to concede or say, "wow that's a different point of view than I have considered, maybe it requires me to spend some thought on why I feel the way I do." Which is the real value of differing opinions; they help us re-assess and redefine the reasons why we feel the way we do.

Delphia,

It cant help that especially online it seems incredibly rare for someone to point out that you are wrong politely, gently and informatively. Who wants to admit they are wrong to someone who informs you via “OMG you dumb fuck…”

tygerprints,

That's also true. How can you not be defensive when someone's reply starts with, "listen here you stupid dumbfuck....." Of course that kind of name calling is going to result in a verbal fight. I don't know why we can't just say, "OK I disagree but here's why, and I hope you'll appreciate my feedback." Do we have to resort to calling each other juvenile names? A person isn't stupid just because they have a controversial point of view.

Bitswap, in What game do you play to just chill?

Stardew valley and/or kerala space program.

milicent_bystandr,

Is Kerala Space Program similar to Mumbai Flight Simulator?

Bitswap,

Never heard of mumbai flight simulator. In KSP you design, build and then fly rockets, planes, space planes and spacecraft. It’s a one of a kind game.l

milicent_bystandr,

Just joking from your typo: you wrote “kerala space program”, not “kerbal space program” ;-)

Bitswap,

LOL. Didn’t notice at all. I tip my hat to you, sir!

milicent_bystandr,

I also like Egypt Scrolls V: Seattle; Zimbabwe: Breath of the Wilds; Age of Emirates II; and Maryland Kart.

Bitswap,

I’m also into RaWorld!

postmateDumbass,

Cheif Sealth gonna kick some Ramesses ass.

Karlos_Cantana, in What tax prep companies do you know that are non-scummy (don't lobby against the IRS making tax returns easier and/or free)?
@Karlos_Cantana@sopuli.xyz avatar

This doesn’t answer your question, but I will take this time to rant about Jackson Hewitt. I’ve never used them, but I had an 18 year old employee making a little over minimum wage that used them about 20 years ago. His taxes were simple and just, at the time, a 1040EZ. It’s a simple one page document that takes about 1 minute to fill out. He didn’t owe any federal tax, so he should have received back all that he had paid in that year. Jackson Hewitt took all of his refund plus about $200. I wouldn’t be surprised if all the places you listed are just as scummy.

I’ve always done my own taxes except when I had to withdraw from my 401k for a large hospital bill. I went to a local independent tax preparer that charged me $100, but she had a special code that saved me several thousands of dollars in taxes and penalties for early withdrawal from 401k. There was no way that I could have done that on my own. The IRS gives accountants special “powers” that make them necessary. The fact that an entire industry is built around just figuring out how much taxes you owe is a travesty.

shinigamiookamiryuu, in What game do you play to just chill?

I only played it to try it out, and it isn’t 100% in my range of games I’d care that much for, but I’ve gathered that Pokémon Mystery Dungeon (especially the first few pairs of games in the series) is the king when it comes to escapism. If someone said a psychologist made the games, I’d believe them.

Terraria. I started a new character/world probably 200 times. Music is also bang on.

msage,

Hey, this is a classic.

Just turn off vehicle breakdowns, as they can cause huge congestions everywhere. And that’s very stressful.

I love trains

penquin, in What game do you play to just chill?

Genshin impact on PC is a masterpiece. The colors on my 4k monitor are just out of this world. I don’t even do hard missions, I just go around the wild collect foods and stuff. So relaxing.

davidgro,

And even more casual than that is their latest game, Honkai: Star Rail. The combat is turn based, so you can just look away and come back later as you wish and don’t need gamer reflexes at all*

I love it.

(* There’s one minor exception - an Ultimate move can be launched after your turn, but before the enemy’s turn or between two enemies’ turns, which does require some speed. It’s not usually important though.)

penquin,

They have another game? Damn, I’ll need to check it out. Thanks for bringing it up.

TheMinions,

What would you define as a hard mission?

penquin,

Man, those “into the frey” fights where you have 45 seconds to defeat 69474783748 creatures are so stressful. Also, those big ass monsters are very hard to beat. That’s stressful. That’s why I just go around the wild to collect foods and stuff. Lol

davidgro,

They could be low level. I certainly remember when a Ruin Guard was a big scary monster that could kill my whole party.

And later when I was playing pretty seriously I still stayed out of Abyss Floor 12 because it wasn’t worth the effort (literally - I never got enough stars to get a reward from it even when I technically defeated it)

penquin,

There are challenges where you have like 45 seconds to defeat a bunch of creatures to just open a chest. I hate those

mycatiskai, in Would you choose invisibility or teleportation?

If you had the teleport jump ability from the book Jumper that would be pretty cool and useful. The character fills a cistern by being in water and in the cistern simultaneously which would be a great way to help drought suffering areas while also helping flooding areas.

EmoDuck,

I’m looking for a new book to read but wasn’t blown away by the movie. How different is the book?

mycatiskai, (edited )

Far better than the movie. Much crap was added to the movie. Better antagonists in the book and the sequel was also good. Upon searching just now I found that there are a total of four novels in the series.

Jumper, Reflex, Impulse and Exo all by Steven Gould. Now I have two more books to read.

setsneedtofeed, in Would you choose invisibility or teleportation?
@setsneedtofeed@lemmy.world avatar

Teleportation. I suppose it would be somewhat limited by the fact that teleporting to a place where other people might be would be tricky, since I absolutely don’t want to be caught.

Even with hesitation to teleport to populated areas, the ability to teleport home would be massively useful as a utility. I could also teleport out of danger in an emergency. I wonder if I pick up a person would allow me to teleport them with me, in which case then it’s got hero potential too.

Stern, in What kind of wearable device do you want? Assuming it will work and feel like you imagine it would
@Stern@lemmy.world avatar

Kamen Rider suit, complete with being able to shout, “Henshin!” and transform.

No I will not elaborate.

skip0110, in What do you do to reduce your use of single use plastics?
@skip0110@lemm.ee avatar

A great way is by charging for volume of trash produced. My city works that way (pay per bag) and we produce very little trash (sometimes not even filling a trash bag in one week). It also makes you really consider buying something when you include the potential cost of throwing it away, if it is not reusable.

arirr, in What is Hamas' current charter or policy documents it relies on in terms of its own hegemony (if any at all)

I’m definitely skeptical of anything “moderate” that they claim to now operate on. Their actions, especially on October 7th illustrated what their actual ideology is. They even still have foreign workers who are entirely uninvolved hostage.

Thorny_Insight, in What kind of wearable device do you want? Assuming it will work and feel like you imagine it would

One that slaps me on the back of my head every time I’m ruminating

otter,

I remember seeing something like that for posture, could repurpose it

Thorny_Insight,

I need that too
